Fun fact: The actor who plays Nell's therapist was in the original 1963 version, which was called "The Haunting" -- he played Luke. He was also in the great movie West Side Story and Twin Peaks.

Yeah, I really hope these two watch the original film when they're done with the series, even if they don't react to it. The way they honored the original book and film, and how they kept key moments in a new context was so well done. I'm still furious at the remake in the 90's. The cast was so perfect in every role and they just butchered it with the script and direction.

The casting of Russ Tamblyn is a coy reference to both the original film and Twin Peaks. Just as he plays Nells psychiatrist here, he played Laura Palmers psychiatrist in TP. Both women victims of supernatural evil forces. Both deaths brought destruction and pain to their respective families.

I’ve seen this show three times and I still cry when she dances with her husband. Like even the second time I saw the first episode, when Nell’s ghost lets out that scream in Steve’s apartment, I got teary eyed instead of scared like I did the first time I saw it. I just feel pain for Nellie after knowing about her life and death. It’s phenomenal writing.

The concept of this poor girl being haunted by her own death her entire life, and it being sealed in her fate during her first night sleeping in Hill House…wow. TBH people keep talking about how terrible the advice for Nell to go back and confront the house is, but a VAST majority of the time that wouldn't be that bad, because most houses are just houses, not cursed, and haunted like theirs was. Just because WE know there is actual danger in the house for Nell, doesn't mean there is any reason for her therapist to believe there is anything other than emotional trauma.: As there are plenty of people who don't believe in the supernatural, and confronting something from their past can help some people move on. Admittedly I'd say he should insist she not go alone. Anyway just playing Devil's advocate here I guess...*shrug*

It's not about the ghosts though. Going back to a place like that alone could mean living the trauma all over again at full intensity, and a person who's already depressed and suffering could very well do something harmful do "deal" with it. You're right in saying she should have not gone alone, but it's not a tiny mistake on the doctor's part not to be adamant about this.

I don’t think her therapist was telling her to _literally_ go back to the house, just confront whatever happened to her there emotionally. Nell just took it to mean “go back to the spooky haunted house.” And the OP is right. Very few rotting carcasses of houses are actually haunted and trying to pull their occupants back for execution. I can’t think of more than two or three in my town.

Yeah, I've seen a lot - and I mean a lot of people react to this series. The therapist never tells Nell to actually go to the house. So many people get this mixed up. He never tells her to go there, she concludes that on her own - and she is wrong in her interpretation of what he says. In fact just moments prior, she tells her therapist that she confronted Steve, like he told her to. And the therapist tells her, that's not quite what he said. Either way, love you guys! Been looking forward to you getting to this episode, and the next. What a fantastic series this is!

to be fair, the therapist never said for Nell to actually *go* to the house, he just mentioned it as kind of a thought experiment. therapists speak like that all the time as a way of helping their patients talk through past trauma. besides, Nell wasn't taking her meds which he had already advised her to do and she obviously wasn't complying. and anyway, how was he supposed to know her childhood home was haunted? lol oh! and did you figure out why Nell threw out her meds? she knew that as long as she was taking medication Luke would never be sober because of their twin connection so she threw them out. notice how after that, Luke was able to stay clean for 90 days. I love your reactions so much and can't wait to continue this journey with you! 😃

The ghost of the mother wrote "Welcome Home Nell" in its entirety on the wall in present day (albiet she wrote it backwards) when most of the wallpaper had decayed off. But thanks to the weirdness of the house, it appeared on the wall in the past under the wallpaper except for Nell's name. When Theo peals back the wallpaper she just doesn't peal enough to reveal the "Wel." But it was always there.

Same. I've had about 7 or 8 episodes over the last five years and it's terrifying. Thankfully it seems to have faded away and I haven't experienced it for about a year. I have no idea what caused it. I never had it when I was younger and I don't think it was stress, I've had far more stressful times without that happening. It's such a strange thing.

I get sleep paralysis frequently to the point that it's a normal thing for me now. I used to get it a lot when I was younger when compared to now. I still get it maybe once every two weeks. I never saw it as 'paranormal' and I notice I usually get it when I'm just too tired physically. It's still annoying though yes haha.

When you guys finish this series, you should really check out OCULUS (2013) from the same writer and director. It has a similar premise (adult siblings coming home to confront the supernatural force that destroyed their family as kids) and uses a lot of the same themes and ideas that later developed into this show, but with a very different story. Might be interesting to do a comparison (plus it's just a really good movie). Stars Karen Gillan, Katie Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane.

I've had it several times too, but two of them stand out. One had a dark hooded figure standing over the bed with a scythe, staring at me while I can't move, the other was like a flashing series of scenes of me trying to get out of bed but always finding myself back in bed. Like, I wake up and start to get out of bed, blink I'm back in bed. I try rolling out of bed, blink I'm back in bed. I scream for my husband, blink I'm back in bed. This went on and on with crazier scenarios including one where the bed burned up.

i remember having sleep paralysis when i was around 17. i remember my bedroom door kept opening and slamming shut. then at some point it stopped and that's when i got really scared. starting hearing my closet door slowly start opening and hearing something growling on the other side. shit was wild lol. i did learn to just hold my breath during these times. when it's happening you feel weightless but when holding your breath, you'll start feeling "heavy" again and then you're able to fully wake up

Each of the ten episodes has a specific function but they also all advance the story and the characters. There are no dead ends, throwaway moments, or unanswered questions. I've had sleep paralysis 3 times, all in the last 10 years, can confirm it is horrible and the only times I felt scared in that 10 years. Only lasts likely 30 seconds or less but It's always a shadow man on top of me pinning me down holding my wrists, I fight back but he's equal strength with top advantage, I try screaming for help but no sound comes out. Then I fully wake and always wonder if any sound came out of me and only I couldn't hear it.

Still gotta start Midnight Mass, and they just announced that Mike Flanagan is doing a new series based on Edgar Allen Poe stories, like he did with "The Haunting of Bly Manor" series using stories by Henry James. I just hope he tackles Lovecraft at some point. I feel like the closest we've gotten to a decent 'Lovecraftian' film is really 'The Mist', unless I'm missing something.

They need to watch Bly Manor first and then Midnight Mass. Mike will never top Hill House, ain’t happening. The acting, storytelling, cinematography, soundtrack, editing and visuals of this show it’s just amazing, a masterpiece. Now that I look back at this episode, the reason Luke was shocked or scared when he saw Nellie's meds in her bag while she was buying him dr*gs was because he knew about the empathy connection they had and that he wouldn't be clean and recover while she's having them. This episode is a ride. It puts out just a little more proof that most if not all of the Cranes have some sort of sixth sense / second sight. As of this point of the show it’s most obvious in Theo but if you think about each episode all of the children at this point have those vibes.

I imagine I'm not the first person who has seen this show before who when TBR said in episode one or two "I had sleep paralysis once" thought "Ooooooh no...." and thought of this episode to come.

In addition to the siblings representing the stages of grief, I have noticed something. Things can touch Theo yet she can't touch things (without something happening). Steven is heard by many yet he can't listen. Feel like there is something similar for the other siblings although I can't figure it out. If this make since to you and you know any of the others please reply with that additional information. I really want to complete this hypothesis.

Sleep paralysis are a recurrent thing for me. Started when I was 19, and the sheer terror is just inexplicable to someone who never got through it. There were times when I'd get two episodes in a row and I'd just avoid falling at sleep until the sun was up for a week. F*cked me up big time. In the end you learn how to deal with them, but I can really see a person being broken to the point of insanity if they're not lucky. I got hooked to the show because of this thing we shared.

Yep, that's pretty much my experience too. Luckily for me, it just stopped as quickly as it started about 5 or 6 years ago. But I had SP regularly for about 20 years.
