The thing I think a lot of people misunderstand about Steve is the nature of his denial. People think he's stubborn and foolish for not accepting the evidence he's seeing, except IMO it's not that at all. Steve has thoroughly and completely convinced himself that all of the terrible things that happened to his mother and family members throughout their lives are due to a hereditary mental illness. So when he experiences the visions of Nell and of the mother at the funeral home, it's not that he's in denial that he's seeing them; in fact these events reinforce his fears and act as further proof of what he believes, which is that he's mentally ill and slowly going crazy over time.
@millaray99123 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Steve is not “in denial” out of any desire to hurt his family members. He is terrified for them, & for himself. Truly, most rational people would be Steve in this situation.
@kcallamajaji3 жыл бұрын
Yup. This exactly. He does not believe in the supernatural. He explains this is ep. 1. There is phenomenon that we, as a society understand by way of science, and phenomenon that we don't yet understand, but that there is nothing 'super' about it. He thinks the whole family has serious mental health issues and that the dad either ignores them or tries to blame them on supernatural stuff that Steve doesn't believe in.

@MISTERBABAD00K3 жыл бұрын
Nellie's final lines in the episode (the ones her ghost mimics from when she was a kid) is to illustrate a point to the family. This should be a time of mourning and reflection and remembrance for her, but her family's arguing and issues pretty much make them ignore the reason they are there for the majority of the episode. She is so desperate to help and stop the fighting, she makes her own coffin fall just to bring them back to the moment. "I was right here, but you couldn't see me..."
@mnomadvfx3 жыл бұрын
The terrifying tragedy (and I believe the reason they never showed her viewpoint when disappeared) is that as a child she was almost certainly experiencing her own funeral albeit lacking much of the context to it - if they had shown the child Nell watching that it just would have been entirely too much to bear, so I can respect them for that restraint.

"None of you could see me. Nobody could see me". Ten words to describe a tragedy.
@mnomadvfx3 жыл бұрын
The scariest thing is that I believe beyond a doubt that her disappearing act in the past was child Nell experiencing the funeral - they neglect to show her viewpoint there for a very specific reason, ie showing it would just be the straw that breaks the camels back in an episode already full to the brim with heartbreak and tragedy, showing a child watching her own funeral out of context would be an indescribable cruelty to an audience.

@mnomadvfx3 жыл бұрын
It has that power though because of the build up from the other episodes, so comparing it to full length movies is unfair to say the least. Film screenwriters have to cram a lot into 2-3 hours and it's always hit and miss when they aren't just throwing CG at the screen ad infinitum.
@marcwa743 жыл бұрын
Your friendly neighborhood Funeral Director here 🧛♂️. Another great episode and probably my favorite out of the entire series. I broke down at the end as well. I noticed that TBR asked if it was customary for Nell’s body to be placed out the night before for a viewing and if the body would be ok for the funeral services the next day or the upcoming days. The answer in most cases is yes, she should be fine. Shirley mentioned she’d have to touch up her makeup b/c the casket fell. But most open casket funeral services, particularly in the south have a visitation the day or night before the funeral service. In most circumstances, the immediate family has a chance to view the deceased, privately before anyone else does, to see if any changes need to be made and to have a private moment with their loved one. This visitation can occur at the funeral home or the location of the funeral service. Lastly, when it comes to embalming and slowing down the process of decomposition and putrefaction it all depends on the condition, age and cause of death of the deceased. In most cases, a healthy young person, with a healthy vascular system should be able to be embalmed( embalming fluid is pumped in through the arteries and blood is pumped out through the veins) successfully to where they are preserved long enough to have a public viewing for a funeral service before a burial. There are circumstances where other measures must be taken particularly with some older people who may have died of an illness that makes it harder to embalm their body. Heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, amputees etc.. can make it harder to inject embalming fluid throughout the entire body. Hypodermic needle injection is a way to inject into areas of poor circulation. Also the use of plastic pants, unionalls, stockings, coveralls can be used under the clothes of the deceased to prevent any( for lack of a better term) leaking of any fluid.

Most of the jokers who make the decisions for award shows probably made it to the first jump scare, dismissed the whole thing as a throwaway horror show, then didn't finish it. I can't imagine this not winning any awards or even nominations if anyone in charge of making those decisions had actually watched the damn thing. Which leads me to believe that they didn't bother to watch it.
@thepuzzleoracle67604 ай бұрын
There is a behind the scenes video about how they shot this episode and it’s so cool! They planned from the beginning for Shirley’s funeral home set and the hill house set to be side by side for the shot of the dad walking from one to the other. The whole episode was done in 6 long takes, the longest of which was 17 minutes long!! I can only imagine how many takes that took.
@CraigKostelecky3 жыл бұрын
As you noticed right away, almost all of this episode is in 5 long takes. The first cut is when the chandelier falls. It then switches each time the time period transitions. I think the longest cut (the middle part) was around 17 minutes. And my favorite camera move was in the 4th scene where the camera goes from the second floor to the ground level. But the best part about this episode is this wasn't just a cinematic masterpiece; these camera moves perfectly put us in the characters' POV so we would feel just what they were feeling. So the decision to do these long cuts wasn't gratuitous, it was essential to properly tell this story. This series, but especially this episode is simply sublime.

“Whatever’s going on, the house is not...satisfied.” TOO RIGHT TOO RIGHT. More right than you even knew at this point. But yeah, technically speaking this episode is just insanely virtuosic. The directing and acting and the work of the entire crew had to be SO on point to make this happen. And they did it. Incredible. This episode alone should have won an award, the series as a whole deserved to sweep any ceremony. Genuinely in my top five best series of all time, and the fact that all that impact is put forth in ten tight episodes makes it all the more impressive. The last two minutes of this episode never fail to take me out at the knees. Brilliantly and heartbreakingly crafted for several layers of impact. Most of these episodes still make me cry every time, but damn if 5, 6, and 10 aren’t the worst offenders.

The buttons that Nell had in her eyes when she was in the coffin that was her mother, she used to give her buttons to her when she was a kid, they said it in the previous episode. Also, Nell wanted them to stop fighting multiple times that’s why she cut the power off to separate them and later drop her body when Steve and Hugh were fighting, so they stop fighting. And you could heard Hugh talk about changing the battery of the flashlight multiple times, that’s because the rumors that ghost drains batteries. And when Olivia was walking in the house and Hugh was following her getting to death ends, doesn’t that reming you of something? watch the intro again….there’s minor clues in the intro and dialogue. Nell said in her episode that she was alone in LA after her husband died. The only other person she knew there was Steve, but he was always away on book tours. Theo told her to move back east so she'd be closer to the rest of the family.

Any chance the "ghost guy" is the same mortician from the flashback when the mom died? Is this the same mortuary?

This probably the scariest episode, because some people actually argue at funerals.

Each of the remaining siblings had a secret that they've been keeping, and Shirley is no exception. Secrets can come back to haunt you where you live, especially if Hill House is involved. We're going to learn about Shirley's secret in ep 8 or 9 (I saw this series when it first aired 3 yrs ago). Yes, I agree - This series should have won Emmys for writing, editing, directing, and best series, to say the least.
