Good evening! Thank you so much for over 4,600 subscribers! I'm very grateful for everybody's support, and I really hope you enjoy this walk around The Headland, also known as 'Old' Hartlepool :) As for some bonus info on The Headland, you'll notice that the area in front of Borough Hall is very open, with The Squircle, Town Square and Croft Gardens laid out before it. As we mentioned, Croft Gardens was built on an area called 'The Croft', which was among the narrowest and most densely-populated parts of medieval Hartlepool, and a far cry from the gorgeous gardens that stand there today!

To me being a born and bred headland monkey hanger the Squircle was a waste of money. Before the Squircle was the Tea gardens which was a LOT BETTER than the Crapquircle. They should have asked the people the of the headland what they thought before changing it for before they changed it. I could say brown envelopes spring to mind but i am to shy to say that.

I really enjoyed my walk around the Headland at about 3pm on a sunny autumn day. I saw about 3 people in about 1 hour. The place was like a ghost town, which is amazing as it's so lovely. I wonder why no one is out and about enjoying the scenery and fresh air??

My father was organist at St Hilda’s in the mid 1960s while I at the same time proved I had no voice to be a choir boy there. Over the years I have watched from afar the misfortunes of Hartlepool but have been pleased to see some of the progress in the last decade or two. Perhaps its time to make a visit.

I love these videos of the headland where i was born and bred in Penrith Street in a 2 up 2 down in 1955. Where the front room was kept for visitors. I used to sit in the kitchen listening to the Clitheroe kid on the radio. My mother and father used to tell me that no one would dare say a word while i was listening to the radio show or they would have been hell on. Sunday night was bath night in the old tin bath in the front of a sea coal fire.

I lived in West Hartleppol for 40 odd years and played for Hartlepool Rovers rugby team. The second team is called “The Heughers” which we pronounced “uffers”. The club badge features a monkey being hanged. To travel from West to Hartlepool you had to go over the border by driving under a railway bridge which is no longer there. Hartlepool did have its own railway station ,now gone, which was next to the docks.Another excellent walk and i have a bit more of its history.

My 4 grandparents (Loughborough, Watson, Wilson, Young) and some of their ancestors lived in Hartlepool, including Kate Loughborough and her family who ran a grocery shop in The Croft around 1880-90. I wish I could have seen her little face, the first time she saw that Elephant Rock was missing! Why did she never tell me about it! My great uncle, Bertie Young was a 13 yo fatality of the WWI bombardment. I still remember, 55 years ago, being dragged up from London to Hartlepool for many school holidays, in a very unreliable, smoky car, many hours each way. I visited the Headland 5 years ago, trying to visit places that I had 'found' in my family research.

Another great walk. Thank you. One question : how would you pronounce heugh? Would it be like huff?
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 жыл бұрын
A good question - and one that I'm pretty sure I've been getting wrong for a long time! I normally pronounce it like the name 'Huw', but doing a bit of research tells me that it's actually pronounced 'Hyuff', so almost a combination between 'Huw' and 'Huff'! Thank you very much for watching and commenting as always - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)
