Let's Walk!

Let's Walk!

Күн бұрын

Join me for a walk around the stunning seaside town of Whitby, located in an isolated valley on the North Yorkshire coast, surrounded by the spectacular North York Moors. Home to a historic Abbey established in the 7th century, Whitby has been the site of fascinating development through the years, famed in recent times for its association with Bram Stoker's Dracula.
On our walk around Whitby, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Whitby Abbey, Abbey House, St. Mary's Church, Caedmon's Cross, the 199 Steps, Church Street, Wesley Hall, Arguments Yard, Whitby Old Town Hall, Sandgate, Grape Lane, Captain Cook Memorial Hall, Whitby Swing Bridge, the River Esk, Whitby Harbour, the Endeavour (replica), Whitby War Memorial, Baxtergate, St. John the Evangelist Church, St. Hilda's Catholic Church, Old Methodist Church, Flowergate, No. 38 Flowergate, Golden Lion Bank, The Jolly Sailors Inn, Whitby Lifeboat Museum, West Cliff, The Khyber Pass, Whitby West Pier, Whitby East Pier, Whitby's lighthouses and Whitby West Cliff Beach.

Whitby is gorgeous, and the film does it justice, pretty well. The whole section of coast is wonderful, from Saltburn, through Staithes and Runswick Bay, past Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay, right down to Scarborough and Filey. Inland lie the little villages and towns of the North York Moors. God's country.

It's absolutely stunning, and as you mention the entirety of the coast there is amazing - I love the road from Whitby to Saltburn with all its ups and downs over the cliffs. There's no wonder why they call Yorkshire God's own county :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video!

"Bringing droves of tourists to Whitby" really made me laugh, since the place was almost deserted !!! Yet I have been to Whitby many times in the height of summer and especially during the Goth and Folk Festival weeks and let me assure everyone it is absolutely jammed packed and very vibrant - wonderful !! And yes, the bandstand has lots of music played there. Thanks so much for the walk and history.

Ha ha ha yes the calmness of Whitby on this day was quite spectacular! But as you know well the crowds are more often than not thronging through those narrow streets, particularly in summer :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

I remember, during ww11, my parents and I had a holiday in Whitby, arriving by train (such an exciting ride, seeing banks of primroses alongside the track). We must then have walked to our accommodation, a house over and near the bridge, with a garden and at the bottom, a gate opening to the river. The luxury item in our very small, brown suitcase, which was probably made of some kind of compressed paper, was a bar of Imperial Leather soap ! I can remember a battalion of soldiers marching through the town, I suppose on their way to the railway station and then into battle overseas. I don’t live in England now but Whitby always has a special place in my memories !

Those are some absolutely wonderful memories - thank you so much for sharing them! The train ride to Whitby is so picturesque, and part of the joy of visiting too! It's very interesting too to hear about how Whitby was involved in the war, that's certainly something very unique that you saw back then :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some memories of Whitby!

I also spent 2 weeks in Whitby during the war when I was about 9yrs. We had a lovely holiday but had to go back to London and the air raids. I don't live in England now either, in the south of US , I plan on one more trip home, as i'm 87 time is getting short.😀

Good evening! I'd like to say a very big thank you for 1,600 subscribers - I'm really glad to hear that you're all enjoying these walks, I'm certainly having a great time making them :) Some bonus info on Whitby Abbey House, which I didn't cover in the video around 3:01: It's a Grade I-listed building, and was built from 1669-72. As you might imagine, it was used for private residence, but was leased to a holiday association in 1896. Today, it's the home of Whitby YHA, one of Britain's most ornate youth hostels!

Just watched an episode of Heartbeat which showed Whitby and I decided to come to KZbin and see if I could find a nice video of the place. This was wonderful. I fell in love with Whitby in 1997 and visited three more times over the next 10 years (from Canada). I went there after my sister died in Scotland. I made a Whitby friend who got us into the Whitby Gazette when I was there celebrating my 50th birthday. I loved Whitby so much I named my cat Whitby. It's been 14 years now since I was there and unless I win a lottery it's not likely I'll be able to return, but this is just about like being there. Just listen to those seagulls! Thank you so much!

I love Whitby because of its sinister underbelly. I always feel a strange tension in the air. I remember arriving one evening just as the light was fading. Rain was coming down like stair rods and fork lightning was ripping the dark sky apart while the abbey looked like a colossal vampire perched on the cliff top. The grey haunted sea was folding, slapping and crashing and the sparkle of illuminated windows in the shambolic twisted buildings looked like shimmering gemstones. It was the most atmospheric arrival I've every experienced. It was spine tingling.

Thanks that was an amazing walk through the Town. I am 67 now and I was there when I was 15 and on the local map it showed all the alleyways and I took it on myself to walk all of them. My memory recalls very little as we only passed through briefly, I remember the market square and looking in the Whitby jet shop, but the prices were way out of my husbands range, I did acquire a small piece later in life but not sure where it would be from as we never did come back to Whitby, I have enjoyed this educational trip and have learned a lot through this meander down memory Lane, and you are quite right it is a Spectacular Town! and I’m off for a second viewing as is the norm with your wonderful walking tours, thank you 🙏 very much 🤗👋

I am delighted this appeared in my recommendations. I was born in Middlesbrough, (1960), and from around 66 to 78 summer hols alternated between Whitby and Scarborough. Personally, I preferred Whitby, t'other place always seemed a tad garish and brassy. And each time we went to Whitby we just had to count the steps up to the Abbey just in case a step had been added or subtracted inbetween visits, hahaha. Oh and the fish n chips, absolute bliss! Always had 'em with buttered white bread and a pot of tea, weak orange squash for us kids. I vividly remember one holiday when Mam's cousin Bernard, (Ord), drove us all the way to Whitby in his massive Bentley, how grand we felt, lol. Saltburn-by-the-Sea wasn't as exciting as t'other two destinations, it was somewhere, like Redcar, where we'd go on day trips by bus. In the mid-70s my uncle and aunt ran a bub/boarding house in Saltburn so occasionally I'd stay weekends, I'd get ten bob for collecting glasses and emptying ashtrays. Had my 1st taste of Double Diamond at 15, bloody vile stuff, hahaha. I've lived 'dahn sarf' since 1983 but I'll always be a Yorkshireman. Thanks so much for this beautiful video trip down memory lane. It fair brought a tear to my eye.

@@LetsWalkUK ... The pleasure was all mine. Where possible we would rent the same cottage on the quayside each time so we were in the heart of the town and not having to comply with a B&B or hotel's rules around meal times etc. I fondly recall how the owner of the cottage always left a cake of some description along with a large unsliced farmhouse loaf and a large pat of home made butter and a bottle of thick gloriously creamy milk for our arrival. If memory serves she and her husband ran a smallholding in Goathland and rented out what had been her childhood home! She'll be pushing 100 if she's still alive.
