You are so blessed to be born there. In the summer of 1978 I walked through Epirus. One day I arrived in a village where there was a fiesta. A small band was playing in an open space and every body was in the mood and relaxed. The music hit me like a hammer. (every cell of my body ... and soul) I put my backpack behind the band and fell asleep. I was in extasy till next morning when the elders with the children showed up. I repeated this in 2 more villages with the same band. Now 40 years later I would like to do it over next year or 2 years from now. If you or someone you know can give me advise....... I know its not easy because it must be unspoilt by tourism . Pure culture. Thanks

It's basically music of Albanian language transcended into Greek as well after the Greek revolution, and it's alive on both sides of the border. At the best can belong to both according to nowadays standards but deep down its origin is pretty clear. Same story as Fustanella.

My family is from Epirus and yes there is communal transcendence to this music. And I fully appreciate your genuine love for the music that came of pain and love. But I was a little taken back that this needed to be delivered by a “westerner” like this is some undiscovered land. And it was delivered to Athenians. I mean - I could go on and on but - what?!!

It is a regional music shared by two neighbouring countries.... North Western Greece and Southern Albania...Each of these 'countries" can lay claim to this special music. This is known...and the songs are so ingrained in both these areas on either side there is no point in debating it's provenance. . Neither Greeks or Albanians probably don't need a lectur about the music that still lives and flourishes in their lands. But good that it is better known throughout the world kai such talks. It is not possible to divide the music or differentiate this music - except by differences in language and the secrets of each musical 'company" - Musicians knows this..In fact - each village and company/family play in their own manner, with their own secrets and style...the differences in the music is more between players and their location than countries..Enjoy the music....And let's pay respects to the 'Western" musical instrument they play on..the violin and clarinet...Homage must also be paid to the Western Europeans for making some flexible and agile instruments.. You can tell I'm a musician!

@@Elstocks21Arbanites are Arbans, called so by the Roman cartographers, meaning Dorian (Forrester/Druid... Druian in Albanian)... from the Latin word Arbor (now Albero, in Italian). There’s a region in Italy called Colli Albani (which means Forested Hills). If you think that Dorian invasions didn’t come from Epirus, you must have failed History in school brother. Epirus is the ancient root word of Shq-Ipër(us). It just means highland (Epëri), and is synonyms with Molossia (Målësia), or now, though only a portion of it... Zagoria (Slavic). Ergo, Epëria (Epirus) is the highland of Arbania (“Doria”). Greeks were made of Dorian stock, including Dorians that came from Epirus... and everyone is 1 big Arvanites family! 😁 Unless there was a spacecraft that magically dropped “Greeks” in Epirus... a new breed of people that coincidentally looks Albanian, has the same tribe names and language as Albanians... the only reasonable conclusion is that Dorians, founders of Sparta and Athens, were Albanian. Now you can pretend to laugh laboriously.

I realize this is late response, but saw your comment. Some music from the 20's and 30's (like what we're hearing here) is public domain, some of it is not. It's really hard to find out who owns what. BMI and ASCAP are the only databases I know of to search, but they seem unreliable, and are by no means complete. I've looked up things recorded in 1930, only to find the song owned by someone who covered the song in the early 2000's. The best way I've found to see who owns what, is to upload an old record to youtube, and if it gets flagged, someone owns it. I'm always surprised to find out what is owned, and what isn't. fairly well known songs can be public domain, and total obscurities that yield no information from a google search can be owned by some company you've never heard of. It's strange. TLDR some is some isn't, and it's pretty random.

This is not homeric music. This is vlach music that slowly transferred to Albanian and Greek music. Miroloi means "lament" in eastern Romance. Also "samantaka" stands for "Osman Taka", an Albanian Chamides that danced before being shot by the Ottomans. You should see it danced by Albanians. It is a sight to behold.

As a matter of fact tsamiko as Greek call it or chamiko is albanian dance from region of Chameria. The Muslim Albanians of Chameria were massacred and forced to leave everything behind crossing the border never to return. The orthodox albanians are assimilated and afraid to reveal their identity. Today Greeks call tsamiko their national dance, the dance named after the population they massacred and forced to flee to Albania.
