► Vagabond Synopsis:
In 16th-century Japan, Shinmen Takezou is a wild, rough young man, in both his appearance and his actions. His aggressive nature has won him the collective reproach and fear of his village, leading him and his best friend, Matahachi Honiden, to run away in search of something grander than provincial life. The pair enlist in the Toyotomi army, yearning for glory-but when the Toyotomi suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan at the Battle of Sekigahara, the friends barely make it out alive.
After the two are separated, Shinmen returns home on a self-appointed mission to notify the Hon'iden family of Matahachi's survival. He instead finds himself a wanted criminal, framed for his friend's supposed murder based on his history of violence. Upon being captured, he is strung up on a tree and left to die. An itinerant monk, the distinguished Takuan Soho, takes pity on the "devil child," secretly freeing Shinmen and christening him with a new name to avoid pursuit by the authorities: Musashi Miyamoto.
Vagabond is the fictitious retelling of the life of one of Japan's most renowned swordsmen, the "Sword Saint" Musashi Miyamoto-his rise from a swordsman with no desire other than to become "Invincible Under the Heavens" to an enlightened warrior who slowly learns of the importance of close friends, self-reflection, and life itself.

Musashi arc is like guts but in reverse, we see rageful man slowly become more collected, thoughtful, and kind. With guts you see a man go from a loyal soldier and friend, to a rageful monster unconcerned with the lives taken in his quest to kill the godhand.

It’s not guts in reverse. Guts developed into a a man who appreciates what he has and takes care of the people he cares about. He wants to let go of revenge but it’s a constant battle. It doesn’t happen overnight.

1 musashi does train in the manga constantly. 2. i think you're underestimating how much experience life or death battles give you while other noble samurai are training in dojos or not at all. 3. he's a prodigy blessed with a well built body. Vagabond points to this fact a lot with other powerful characters. 4. he was given impersonal training by his father, munisai. 5. he's smarter and more clever than a lot of the other samurai in the story. 6. he grew up in the mountains with unpredictable terrain, dangerous animals, thinner air. Plus he hunted for his food. 7. he is much more daring and determined. It's shown in the story that he'd much rather face a tough opponent and die than live comfortably defeating weaker foes. I think this is shown plainly between him and gion toji who went by similar paths. Gion cuts down anyone in his path but avoids inshun when he realizes how strong he is.

His personal style reminds me a lot of the old saying in Karate: "The most advanced technique you can do are the basics consistently." It's like the style of Kali-Arnis I learn, Cinco Teros. Many of the "modern" Arnis styles have 12 basic strikes whereas our style focused on 5. It actually allowed me and other practicioners to adapt to other Kali systems and Martial Arts quite well.

I think he meant it more in the sense of how in story telling, you show don't tell, and Vagabond basically doesn't show any training, either actual training or the physical results of it afterwards. It does imply it, you see some scenes where Musashi is sweaty and on the floor, but never shows it. So any other story, you wouldn't believe for example that the protagonist absolutely shits on someone like Inshun only a little time after he got his ass whooped by him without a training montage or something like that. Vagabond is more interested in showing a mental journey rather than a physical one. Same with how he gains more knowledge, experience from and respect for people he doesn't actually fight (Inshun's master, Sasaki, Sekishusai, the swordsmith in Kyoto, the farming dude, etc) while he doesn't even give another thought to any of his physical scars past the immediate moment he gets them. Ofcourse all the things you're mentioning is true, but it's all there more for world consistency rather than story importance.

The farm arc is probably my most favorite arc in manga or anime. The character growth of musashi is one the best in the arc but what i truly loved about is how it teaches us and musashi what it means to be Weak. Through the entirety of the manga we see musashi face a challenge and overcome it through his sheer determination to become strong but in the farm arc we just see him so powerless and no control on the situation, it ties in to the teachings of the real life musashi in the Book of Five Rings. The way they handled it is one the representation of musashi's teachings and thats why i love it so much

As a swordsman, I can tell you that reading the Book of Five Rings is quite hard. I Swordfight since eleven years and I read it four times. The first one before starting fencing, It left me without anything, safe for being able of saying I had indeed read it. The second left me something, third made me understand a lot of things I got wrong through my early days of training, and fourth made me understand that, in the end, it's not a book that explains something, it's a book that let you understand what you already ended up understanding by yourself, it's basically a check list.

Being a Martial Artist for almost my whole life, I found the Gorin no sho/Book Of Five Rings very enlightening and fascinating overall. The copy/translation I got also included a brief and accurate historical background of Musashi's life courtesy of Alexander Bennett. As such I avoided Vagabond at first knowing it's adapted from the (fictional novel) retelling of Musashi's life. However, I found myself rather enjoying Vagabond as it painted a picture of a "savage" learning enlightenment through the Martial Arts. Therefore, I found the "boring" aspects of the Gorin no sho as something an older version of the Vagabond Musashi to ponder upon and it made both more enjoyable overall.

I dont Know if someone has already said this, but the quote about the leaf is quote from the real Takuan Soho, from a letter that he sent to Yagyu Muneroi, and can be found in "The Unfettered Mind" Edit 17/09/2023: To add to the comment, he not only says this quote, but is an example to understand, the letter itself is a journey through the nature of the mind and how it should be used in combat, this letter will help you better understand the hearth of vagabond. As a personal note, look out for the scarecrow quote in the letter, I relate it a lot with the duel of Yagyu and Musashi.
