The Hebridean Way runs for 186 miles across the length of the Outer Hebrides in the North West of Scotland. From the Isle of Vatersay to the Butt Of Lewis, it traverses wide open moors, white sand beaches, sea lochs, ferry crossings, and characteristic fishing towns such as Stornoway, Tarbert and Barra.
In late September 2022 I set out to solo hike and wild camp its entire length. This is my story. Expect emotions as wild and raw as the landscapes through which I travelled, plenty of rain, and perhaps the odd expletive thrown into the wind! It was a turbulent adventure to remember, but my hope is that this film leaves you with a sound reminder to never let the world tame your inner WILD.
Please note that if you are feeling particularly vulnerable at the moment this film exposes a couple of emotional rants on my part that may be triggering. Viewer discretion is advised and do remember that you can come back to this video at any time.
Ps, I believe in you!

I'm in the same boat, last year I could hardly go up and down the stairs. A year after starting taking cannabis for pain I have started building the strength in my legs again. Videos like this just make me even more determined even if everyone laughs when I say I am going to do the west highland way.

Ah Abbie, thank you for being so open about your feelings. The majority of us honestly love you, but can imagine the pressure of filming can take the joy away. Maybe take some time out on long hikes without the camera, just for you to reconnect with your passion again and not give a stuff about anyone else! Giving you a virtual hug my hiking friend xx

Hi Abbie. Let me tell you this, you're an inspiration for me, even though I'm an old man now. You have now made me want to go back to the Hebrides. Last time I was there with my late wife five years ago, the last of the good years we had, where we went to the Hebrides and Orkney, and even four weeks in Ireland, visiting summer schools with "wall to wall" music every day. The following year was to be the worst year of my life, as my wife got diagnosed with an aggessive lung cancer. It took only four months, then she was gone. I lost not only my wife and my rock in life, but also my job, as I was her full time carer for 15 years. Then the year after lockdown happened. Luckily I was granted an early retirement pension, but I was unable to travel. Last year I finally made it back to Scotland for 3 months and visited old familiar places, but also places I always wanted to go, namely the northwestern part of Scotland. And after traveling to Scotland every year for 20 years, I did a number of things for the first time. Callander Grags, Old Man of Storr and Puck's Glen to name a few. Anyway enough of me - just you keep doing what you want to do. We'll be here no matter what. You've shown so much courage and I admire you for being open about your struggles. Don't worry about doing a bit of ranting or letting off steam, that just confirms you're a normal human being. Hope you find your way and continue on the path that is life. As my late wife used to say: "You have only one life" Take care and stay safe

I love your videos and your openness about your struggles. I admire you for how you use your love of the outdoors to treat your own mental & physical difficulties. I am disabled and cannot walk more than a few yards but you inspire me. In my head I am walking with you and experiencing everything with you. For this I thank you because without your videos I would never see our beautiful countryside myself. Please don't let the internet trolls and cyber bullies get you down. Often they are just jealous, envious of your freedom to undertake your adventures, doing something you love come rain, wind or shine. 🥰🥰

Woah, go Abbie! I don't know what the details of the challenges that clearly haunted your hike of the Hebrides are but this is by far and away the most important of your films I've watched to date (in my opinion). I was never really interested in watching anything on KZbin until last year, but then I started looking around as I want to get out and explore nature more. I stumbled across your channel purely serendipitously. It's now one of a very few I check in on regularly. As someone that has had, and still has, my own fair share of mental health challenges, your work has really spoken to me. I can't abide all the 'influencers' that do nothing more than present a sanitised and, for most, unachievable 'lifestyle'. Your work is authentic in every way I can imagine. There is nothing in your work of the 'look at me' that so many others build their whole brand on. I can't imagine how tough it must be to put everything you do out into the ether, but I love you for doing it. I felt so hard for you in the darker moments of this journey, but also felt your joy deeply when it won your heart and your head. I truly and sincerely hope that you were able to leave some of the ghosts you were carrying behind and that those that still walk with you break path away from you very, very soon. In the meantime, thank you. You matter, your work matters and I really value you.

Hi Abby, I can't talk to many of your struggles of being a public figure... but I came across you videos a few months ago. I struggle with anxiety and depression, and understand the feeling of the world just not being the right fit. Sometimes at night I can't let go of my thoughts and my head. Your videos have helped me process things, I love the calming way in which you talk about your issues and the thoughts that swirl in your brain, I also love watching you change your mindset and attitude in the next moment in order to push on, I am trying to work on that type of resilience. Sometimes your videos are the only thing that gets me to sleep at night, but I always go back to the point I drifted off because looking at your moments of exploration, the different places you travel, and the history and knowledge you share is really important and inspiring to me. All the best!

Hi Abbie, well I can honestly say that was one of the best hiking films I have ever seen whether on here or even TV. Beautifully filmed and great commentary. Keep making your journeys for you and what makes you feel good, if people don’t like it then it’s down to them. Life is to short to let people, especially those that we have or will not ever meet to influence our lives. All the best for whatever you have planned for the rest of this year. Cheers Glyn.

Your balance in your videos of both yourself and the terrain your in is spot on. Your videos are amongst the best I watch on travel and adventure. Side note. Have you considered living your life as you want but not documenting and videoing yourself and being "offline". No social networking, no Facebook,Instagram etc as this will completely free you from modern life's stress. Up to 15 years ago no one did social networking, worst thing that happened to us in my opinion. Take care

Abbie, I know this comment is coming way after the release of this video, but I just want to let you know that you're an inspiration for me. I was medically retired from the US Army after 24 years due to bad hips and I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to go on long hikes ever again, so I have been living vicariously through you. It takes a LOT of courage to share your feelings with the public and yes, your frustrations are more than valid. I have seen the best and worst of people in my life, both as a combat veteran in the Middle East and as a former child protective services caseworker, and I think that what you have done and continue to do is BEAUTIFUL. With that said, just know that if you never posted a video again, I will always remember you and the videos you have made. As a retired Army Military Police Major, I am advising you to not let the naysayers get you down. People have a tendency to let their inner demons do the talking when they can hide behind the anonymity of the internet. Ugly comments, whether via digital media or even in person, come from deep rooted (and more often than not unconscious) places of of pain and experienced depravity. Public figures are easy targets. Just remember that the bad comments are not about you; the ugly comments are an attempt for those who make them to shed the negativity that they themselves feel on the inside. I am posting this comment on 26 December 2023, but I started watching this video on Christmas evening as a way to decompress from the all the activities that led up to Christmas Day. This is because who you are and and your video content render an air of well-being and peace. In short, although I spent the day with loved ones, it is you that I turned to in order to ground me at the end of the day. I will end this post with my favorite quote from E.E. Cummings: "To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you like everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting." Godspeed to you, Abbie, in all your adventures.

Laughed with you, fell with you, felt your every trudge frustration and awesome cooffffeee.... and arrived jubilant and emotional at the lighthouse with you. I'm watching this in stages as want to be able to concentrate and enjoy it without rushing it, I've watched the first two days. There's absolutely nothing wrong in getting a lift to the campsite, that first day looked really tough and draining and it meant getting much-needed rest instead of potentially trying to find somewhere to pitch in the rocks in the dark and it meant you enjoyed the next day's walking. Or sitting out some gnarly and potentially hazardous weather and enjoying the surroundings - I loved seeing that little chapel. Like you say, it's your hike and we don't know what the terrain will truly be like or how we feel at the time so it is about listening to your gut and adjusting plans as needed along the way. The filming - such a shame these bullies make you feel this way, the vast, vast majority love your films and there's no such thing as too much of this too little that - it's all good. For every person that doesn't like something, there will be hundreds more who do. And if you can't have a rant with us who can you rant to! Looking forward to the rest - that scenery is something else - doesn't look an easy hike though!

Abbie I have been a long term watcher of your films and love them. I can not begin to understand the pressure and negativity putting yourself into the public eye brings, what I do know is your videos have been life changing for me. Since 2019 I have been walking at least 1000 miles a year and I am healthier physically and mentally and that is thanks to open and honest videos such as yours. Many times I have hit a mental wall when pushing myself on long distance walks and I will often reflect on the times you have shown those tough times and how you got yourself through them. I am planning to walk the coast to coast this year which will be my biggest thru hike and I thank you for everything you have done for me! One day I might even brave wild camping!

Keep being honest with yourself Abbie 🥰 Just being ourselves is all that matters. Im watching this while I pack and organise for a 10 day trip that involves dicing with my idea of hell. Im adhd, im dysexic, im very very introverted as a result of years of how people have treated me because my brain works in funky ways.. I'm heading off to do a week long painting course with a few days either side for exploring and im on a pretty busy campsite for those 10 days because its not the best area for multi day wild camps. Im dreading the noise, the forced interactions, the lack of space and peace but I can do it because I bring my coping mechanisms with me, I can walk, I can stop and look, I can sketch or paint, so long as I can do that I can do anything & when it all starts to get to much, I have to suck it up and let go of that headspace even if it means sitting in my tent having a cry. People who don't understand us can be so very very cruel, you just have to keep telling yourself I can let this go, I will let it go, I refuse to carry it around. Cry, laugh, smile, keep going 😘

But it was amazing to watch, and in my head , I walked it with you! You did GREAT 💯💫💥

Stay true to yourself, it’s very easy for humans to criticise and it will always happen no matter the profession or occupation. Keep doing you! Your documentaries are truly inspirational, and for every 1 piece of criticism there will be 100s if not 1000s of positives that would of impacted people’s lives. Never commented until now, but you can be assured you have helped me on my journey from hiking to personal matters. Stay wild 👍 🥾 🏔️

HI Abbie, I love your videos, your interesting descriptions and commentary. I wish I was your age again. I enjoyed hiking and travel but regret now I didn't do more. I wasn't aware some people were giving you a hard time. Life is full of them regrettably. Best to ignore them completely. Keep up the good work. You are an excellent film maker and please keep doing what you do best, making films of interesting, beautiful and remote areas off the beaten track, which brings us, your viewers with you every step of the way through rain, mist and sunshine.❤❤😂

Your films go from strength to strength - thank you so much for making them! And thanks for your courage in sharing how you are really doing. You are a wonderful and inspirational person so yes, the negative viewers can just....(insert suitable "directions" here!) By the way, the birds of prey circling at 15:45 are White-tailed Eagles (Sea Eagles). And again, on the beach at 54:15. At 56:26 that's a young White-tailed Eagle again (not a Golden Eagle). Clearly, the UK's most powerful bird is watching over you!

@jeffbrumby3442 Жыл бұрын
Apart from it being a lovely atmospheric video, well done for managing to film what looks like two different species of Eagle at once... The first bird soaring left to right has the wings narrowing where they join the body, and a tapered "hand" shape at the end of the wing, at 15:45 you show its fanned out, square cut tail, classic Golden Eagle ID, the "second" Bird that soars left then right has the untapered "barn door" wing profile and pointed wedge tail of a White Tailed (Sea) Eagle. Fantastic!

Nice ranting! That really struck a cord for me. I feel like I understand what you are saying, though my situation is quite different. I am in the process of leaving my field as a nurse, because I cannot recognise the person in my mirror anymore - that is not the father, and husband I want to be! This year, I am preparing to walk “Hærvejen”, the Danish army way(I believe the Germans call it the “Ochsenweg”) next year, when I turn 30. It will be my longest walk to date. That will hopefully reset my personality, and give me a break. Cheers to you, for being open about your struggles! Many people are cheering you on, as you inspire us to open up, and get out to take stock of our own troubles! Best wishes from Denmark!

Abbie. I’ve watched a lot of vlogs on this part of the world and then watched yours. You are streets ahead on accessibility, engagement and on the publishing and editing fronts. This was full production excellence. I loved your humour, wonderful smile and spirit and sheer daftness at times in all the best ways. You did just the most wonderful job on this and all credit to you. It is truly one of the most compelling documentaries of any kind I have seen in a long time due mostly to the fact you pour so much of yourself into it. Lots of folk report back in areas but this emotional and engaging pouring of yourself out made it truly compelling. Thanks for bringing it to us and health and wholeness to you in the days and years ahead. You are just fun and lovely.

Honestly Abbie, I think the rawness of the journey matched the forgotten world of the Outer Hebridies you travelled through, and I'm so glad you didn't edit out the difficult moments. Always remember this is your life and journey, no-one else's and make sure your always doing these journeys for yourself and not to please others. A big plus is you've put in some good prep work for the Cape Wrath as well, you'll know what to expect and you know you can get through it as well. P.S I hope they do something to protect them boggy sections or else it will end up like parts of the Pennine Way

I lived in Benbecula for 4 years from 1984 to 88 and it was absolutely fantastic. Most things there were in the extreme weather wise, you could see storms coming in off the Atlantic which gave you enough time to batten down your home and round up your pets. You then waited as things became very calm and quiet just before the storm hit. The only real downside in the summer were the flies on the beach. The fishing was amazing the locals the friendliest people you could meet and cutting peat with a local friend of mine absolutely back breaking but worth it for his mums breakfast at the start of the day. So many good memories of my time there.

Yes Abbie! What an awesome adventure you've embarked on, I'm just commenting after pausing after your 'rant' (which is so justified) and you're so allowed to feel these things! I can imagine how frustrating and devastating it can be when people leave nasty comments, I get one every once in a while and it feels like a punch in the gut, so I can't even begin to imagine what it's like for someone with a platform as big as yours! You're so right to feel angry, sad, confused, frustrated. But you're still a person, a human, even when you're by yourself and just... existing. I love to see your uploads, especially the long distance trails, but as every lovely person in these comments are saying, do what's best for you. I can only just start to imagine to understand the pressures you're going through, and the way we see you navigate them is admirable, even if it's just a glimpse. I struggle with my own mental health too, my anxiety, overthinking, intrusive thoughts etc get way too much sometimes, and my head gets very loud, and this has been more of an issue recently than ever before. The thoughts are devastating and can render me into a panic attack, so I can totally empathise with your situation, or at least what I understand from it. And like you, getting out and having a trail to conquer always seems to help when I'm in a dark 'pit'. I'm super sensitive & empathetic like you, so again, I can only try to understand, and I'm leaving this jumbled mess of a comment to try to convey this, because I want you to know that what you say impacts us and validates most of us, and I want you to feel seen & heard, even if this comment makes you feel just 0.5% better, then that makes me happy. ❤

I watched this for research as I’m planning the Hebridean way this summer, It’s always been on my before 50 bucket list. Thank you so much for your honesty of the environment I’m seriously doubting my ability now! The weather doesn’t worry me I’m in the west of Ireland but the confusion in the route and time scale is giving me walkers anxiety. After watching you I know I will cry so many tears I will probably get dehydrated but I will go and do what I can and just take it all in even if it means some bus hopping to easier more scenic locations. Happy trails for the future

My suggestion to hav3 a successful hike: - expect bad weather but have short days to dry stuff out - stop in places where you can actually dry stuff out.. - gibe yourself some wiggle room if the weather is really bad - stop at every cafe because people are lovely! - enjoy the place. It is phenomenally beautiful 😍

One of your best videos, for the scenery and hiking yes as always but also for the the Pirates of the Abbiebbean theme tuned solo warrior battles in the hostel and having the bravery to show the real you, what you've been battling in the real world, what's been bottling up inside. It's not a Best Of Abbie video without a meltdown! Because you show us what's getting you down but then after you are so happy about being back on the trail! It's like a cleansing ritual. Maybe it'd be good for you to plan in multiday hikes that you don't film or post about, just for you time. Unplug and just get back to enjoying it again by doing it just for you. And maybe Anna too. 😉 You inspire me to get out there to try to do even a fraction of what you achieve and are capable of. I'd never pay as much attention to the plants and flowers without you telling me what they are. So know that you are making the difference you set out to do. You can't please everyone, so just be your genuine self and to those who don't like it, f@¢£ em! 😎

Well done Abbie for speaking out, I don’t have the subscriber numbers you have but understand what you’re saying, getting out into nature is a passion but because of KZbin we film everything & it takes over, you find yourself under so much pressure to get the footage & say what you need to, you miss out on the views because you’re looking at them through a camera lens, it takes away your enjoyment & as you said becomes a job. People on media platforms can be cruel, I just ignore them, delete the comments & take note of those who support you, who are like you, who can relate to you & are inspired by you. Keep doing what you’re doing Abbie, you are solace to some, an inspiration and a sanctuary away from daily life for others. ❤❤

A very beautiful but also brutally honest account of how walking off the beaten track can be. My "getting lost on Rannoch moor" experience isn't in the same league as yours on this trail, but I identified with the frustration of no markers, not discernible path, boggy conditions, bad weather and running out of daylight. And all you can do is keep going ...

Hi Abbie! I know I am late to the comment party. But wanted to let you know you’re the only hiking videos I can stand to watch. Unfortunately, I know what it’s like when you have so many friends who support you, but then you get one bully to ruin it. It’s like the smallest of turds ruining the giant punch bowl. You are so real when it comes to your content, versus over glorified Instagram images. My favorite parts of your videos is when you stop to look at flowers and nature and talk about history. A lot of hiking videos just plow through the scenery like it’s a race to check it off the list. You are the main reason why a couple of years ago when I (a Floridiot) was severely struggling with my mental health I decided to do the W. Highland Way. It was amazing and I went on to do other hikes like the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. In two months I’m moving back to my family home state of Tennessee in the Appalachian mountains where I can continue hiking. Do what makes you happy and make yourself a priority, even if it means taking a break from making KZbin content. You have made an amazing mark on a lot of us and we love and support you whatever is best for you. P.S. I wore your Stay Wild shirt on my pilgrimage!

I'm 67 and walked the West Highland Way this year and watched as many of your videos as I could to inspire me. I had a brilliant time. Thank you for what you do. Having watched your Hebridean Way last night, I've just got to say that this trail was poorly marked, a bog-fest, and difficult. You had every right to feel low about it. It wasn't you at fault. Sometimes difficult circumstances are external and not always something we need to internalise. Being mired in bog for eight days is not my idea of a good time :)
