The large quantity of material could be reduced into manageable porshions if you can strimm them down with a preferably old blade and transport them in a big bag or mabe a wheely bin. if you are able to optain a tipper trailer for the van that could help you out*

In this particular case, I would have trimmed the hedge height to just under the battlements, or maybe 3 or 4 inches lower than the lowest point of the battlements. Next, enter the neighbor's side and stake the plants up, and reduce the plant thickness that juts into the property by at least half. I wouldn't have altered the wall at all, because it may affect the strength of it down the line, and you don't want any liability. I don't know how windy it gets there, but with enough friction, the ropes may not hold, and the pins and rope sticking out of the wall into the alley may be compromised by passers by. Or, instead of staking, maybe a trellis may work on the inner part of the wall.

I have seen a lot of suggestions as to what Ben and his Dad should/could have done differently/better. The fact of the matter is, the hedge is the responsibility of the homeowners, it was overgrown into the alleyway and Ben cleared it to make it safe for people to use, the fact that the rest came down in the storm was their problem to sort not Ben's, I'm sure the homeowners were very chilled a out the whole situation being sorted, as it has definitely saved them a lot of time and money!! I personally would not have had the nerve to complain, i am astounded they did. That said Ben and his Dad are the most kind hearted generous people, and do the most amazing work, well done boys 👍

@FlawlessCleaningServices you could fix some posts to the top of the garden side of the wall and fix a trellis or simple fence. Make it about 600mm high from the top of the wall. You can cut a hedge to half its height and it'll regrow (a third can come off the width - did ghat to mu hedge. Advise from the Royal Horticultural Society)

@@FlawlessCleaningServices You can trim the hedge branches that extend into the yard. Those are the ones adding weight and pulling force. It'll look ragged for a while but small branches will leaf out to cover the bare spots and there will eventually be upward growth to give privacy. If you do trim inside, do a targeted surgical trim, not with the hedge clippers. More like pruning. Go in with bypass pruners and remove the thicker branches that go straight out and leave the shorter ones so you don't end up with a wall of rough cut stems. It will give a softer look and won't pull on the wall as much. Ideally you want it to stay upright without being tied to the wall.

A brick wall is not a very strong structure without a structure applying downward pressure. It would have better to remove the hedge completely. The surviving hedge may now produce an enormous amount of horizontal force on the wall. I hope it doesn’t cause damage to the wall because you do a brilliant job of helping the community.

We had the same problem with our overgrown ivy which covered a wall. Thankfully we put the cut ivy on an bank and it’s taken root helping to stabilise an earth bank which was sinking because of all the heavy rain we had during the last 8 months.

as a construction contractor for many years here in South Texas (USA), I had my share of "ooops" and "failed", so while I am laughing at your misery, my heart also goes out to you. I also applaud you for doing the right thing. I hope the homeowners appreciate that you did the right thing by fixing your "ooops". Well done, lads! I did watch the previous video the other day, and really liked what you did, and was wondering if you were going to give in to the temptation to come back and pressure wash that alley!!

A lot of hedges get planted too close to the wall so all the growth is on one side. Taking off the overhang just made it even more lopsided. It looked mostly like it was Viburnum tinus which can be hard pruned about 2ft off the ground. Just for future reference. Ben and Paul, you did a fab job of tidying up the alley! I hope the hedge stays up.
@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson 11 ай бұрын
My thoughts, exactly. Prune it down short for the owners and let them start again. I'm really afraid those viburnum will just pull the wall down. They're way too top heavy to support themselves and the wall isn't meant to support anything like that with the way it's built. Food for thought. I know you'd hate to have to go back and change what you've done, but I think you'd hate paying to replace the wall even more... Arthur is just the loveliest little boy!

That looks EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. A wall like that is not meant to have lateral forces applied to it. That hedge is going to bring down that wall, and when it does it could cause serious injury - or even death - to anyone it falls on. You need to get back around there ASAP and get the hedge removed BEFORE something terrible happens.

Great that you went to fix the problem and in public view. Even with the vast amounts of vegetation removed, I still have doubts on what is left is supporting itself. If it can’t and will put stress on that wall, I fear that it is only a matter of time where that top third of the wall will get pulled over causing a bigger problem. I hope I am wrong with that thinking but keep up your good deeds
