I was trying heelflips for months, my problem was always that I couldnt get my front foot on the board. I watched dozens of videos to try to learn and the only thing they really said was "just commit bro". After watching your video I realized tjaty problem was that I was 'donkey flipping' the board and flicking off to the side instead of straight forward, the part of where to put your backfoot was also useful. After putting this into practice, i landed with the board upside down with both feet on my board within 5 tries, which is something I could not do in all the months of trying. After 20-30 minutes of trying I landed my first heelflip today. Thank you dan!!!

Dan!! You read my mind dude!! Started back skating 2yrs ago at 48yrs old after a 30 year hiatus feeling like I would never get heel flips again. I've been landing like 1 out of 30 tries for like a year!! This couldn't have been a better time to make this video. Watching this really showed me that my back foot position has been a big part of the problem. Thanks so much!! Somehow your skateboarding algorithm has coincidencly answered my heel flip struggles at the exact time I need this. I landed more heel flips today then I've ever done in my life! Was mid session and saw this. Hadn’t done a heel flip since I was a kid. When I was a kid skater, kickflips just didn’t work so I learned heelflips first, but when I came back to skating at 30 I didn’t want that holding me back so I focused entirely on kickflips and have those now. This video inspired me to give heelflips a revisit and I got it in about 5 min, got 3 total in like 30 attempts before I ran out of gas. I’m not saying become trick tip Andy, but this video was refreshingly relatable in comparison to the usual content (I have no skatepark even similar to any of yours in LA, not even the curbs or flat ground is good here, so seeing transition and street(park) skating is cool and all but I just can’t get inspired by it without feeling let down by my local skateparks. Anyway, cheers to adding a trick to my quiver at 32.

one of the most helpful tips for heelflips for me came from a norman woods video where he explains that you don't jump like you do for a kickflip -- as soon as you jump, you suck your legs up towards your body more than you do for a kickflip. dan c jumping forward tip + norman jump+tuck tip, plus realizing the foot position is not necessary symmetrical to a kickflip (a lot easier for me to flick from all sorts of places for a kickflip) has got them pretty solid for me..thanks again dan

I think you pretty much covered it, besides front foot placement, I really love heel flips and like to say I’m pretty good at them, popping is important but also the flick is key, I know alot of people have there foot straight on the board hanging off the toe side, but I keep my whole foot in the middle right at the front back bolts, and angle my foot just a little not to much, same way you described flicked through the nose so you can get that good tweaky heel flip, and I love how you said flick late, that’s been my secret for years, I think I watched Reynolds do one when I was a kid and just studied his foot placement, when you angle your front foot ever so slightly it will give you more of a flick and also more control over your flick, kind of the same technique I learned for high tweaked kickflip, just flicked on the other side of the nose, I put my back foot in the heel side pocket, not way on the edge, just enough to make the board pop faster, and start to turn the board the opposite way for leverage, also I keep pretty much my whole front foot on the board, just a little bit of my big toe hanging off so I can keep good control, don’t see how people heelflip with half there foot hanging off, I've found the technique I do works the best for me, and a few others I've told about it, we would all love to have Neen heelflip s but hes just different lol, Zach does the Neen version of kickflips, so sick

Instead of jumping forward, one thing I do for both heel flips and kickflips when they are mobbing is to pop it a little backwards, sort of like if I was riding fakie, makes it just level out. Also if I’m not trying to pop is as high and just want a reliable consistent flip, I find it helps to pop off the nose

I got heelflips before kickflips (on the edge of the sidewalk into grass, memory unlocked!), and heelflip is a nice trick because they look better the more you practice them. But if you stop doing them they're easy to lose. Like right now I wish I had my old heelflips. Since I got back on a board, I've devoted a few entire days to getting heelflips and they are not that easy when you start popping them higher it takes specialized muscles in your leg to hold it there on flatground at least lol unless they're just floaty. I've practiced them on this brick floor going faster and my leg felt like it was gonna fall off after the first day. I think you covered most of it. I've had rain for 3 days. Sucks I know I talk about a heelflip 'looking' better lol, I know it sounds vain but nobody wants a trash heelflip. It's just flatground that you care about stuff like that. Anyway losing them seems to be not about forgetting how to do it, I'll never forget how to do the same heelflip in muscle memory, but getting them to come back without doing them every day. By now I should probably be going for a couple nollie or switch ones or something like that too. But also those tricks seriously confuse my brain some times lol Like if I look at a nollie fs 180 I have to think nollie fs toeside(bs180) and some people follow different names for those tricks and I'm not even doing that type of stuff yet. But it gets intense lol

I think if you're having a hard time aiming or rollling your ankle for your flick, start with the origin of the flick. Aim your knee, not your foot. Helps me every time and keeps the flick consistent.

After watching this I went outside and noted something. At 5:03 ish you start to explain having the board turn the opposite direction of where you’re going to flick. But the only way to do that is the tail (which you also go into right after). Interestingly people get the board to spin heelside to 360flip but if you do like a no comply pressure flip (inward heel) it’s sort of the same scoop and spot but the board flips the opposite way, of course you’re pushing down and scoop rather than back and scoop. But in this case we are not scooping. If you pop a kickflip with your foot on the heelside of the tail, it won’t work. You have to put it toe side on the tail I think. But to heel flip if you put the back foot only heelside to get that slight turn before the flick it won’t work. Neither will putting the foot all the way toeside. You can either place it a bit more heelside and pop it right down the middle or, you can find the kickflip spot and move it down slightly to create a different angle. imagine a middle line and a diagonal intersecting line creating an angle. So for that kickflip it’s lower than tre. And for heel flip it’s lower than kickflip. But never below that middle line for either. If a tre is a 90degree, a kickflip is like a 145 and heelflip is like 180 but can also be somewhere in between… hope that made sense? Have a good day. Take care. Ps. Also I explained the other day commenting on this same video how I recalled my first heelflips after watching this, that were off the edge of the sidewalk not rolling at first. But I later recalled something more. They were jumping forwards like a tre flip but the main point of focus when locking them in was learning to put that back foot in a position that gives me consistency. For me I think that was the middle. That line vertical on the board. And just pop it straight down the line sort of going back. I think that’s usually the starting point for a consistent heelflip. Then work from there. Starting again, I was getting those back seat flips and all kinds of weird variations. Thanks for talking about this one. I think I even remember the board! It was like some jim greco johnny thunders tribute board that was black and pink and fully dipped and it said “dead or alive” and had hammer grip! It was like a 7.75 also I think. That board came out 18 years ago...! My real problem with heelflips and kickflips is landing them always makes the board shoot out from under me. So I can’t force it to happen. It just has to come back naturally to me … my muscle memory is trying to go for the monster heelflips and floaty kickflips that spin fast and catch in the air, but it’s not gonna just happen without hard work. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to accept doing mobbed tricks, or my friend used to call them double dribbles. (Look at jonny giger vs jamie griffin game of skate, both are good skaters but johnny giger just pops his tricks a bit higher)

I have been practicing these things again since like the other day. I did a perfect one the other day with my foot almost touching the bolts but I had ishods on and they are like super rubbery on the sides, they have like a jordan outsole. But I actually got them back today with some accels, so basically a suede cupsole sole. I had to put my feet like an inch below the bolts but hanging my toe over the edge a bit. Then I have to put my foot on the tail, inside the tail like near the concave is possible, and I pop with the ball of my foot and big toe right on the middle, slap down the tail to get a good straight pop and then leap straight upwards, like a coil being released. If you jump forwards like a beginner (even the slightest) the board overflips, unless you get a really bad pop then you might get a mobbed one. These heelflips are working like, 8/10 times for me. It sounds basic but that’s all I got. Also you can sort of maybe tuck your back foot in, the back foot for me is stubborn and I have sciatica on that leg some days so it doesn’t help at all…ha. Also the front foot needs to flick with the outsole. I have (or had) a tendency to slide my top shoe eyelet instead. That can occur but it’s not enough to flip with the soft part of your shoe. You can do this one stationary too because the foot placement is really balanced.

most meniscus damage incurred after the age of 25 usually don't simply repair - surgery is rather vain in most cases . The body 'adjusts' and then in the end your body will have an out of balance problem (could be in the back, or shoulders, or neck..) much worse than the meniscus. I see it with almost all my homies who stopped skating 15-20 years ago - and seeing them on a board now is frightful they look welded in a position.

Life required me to take a 20 year break from skating and now I’m back into it but am having trouble figuring out these new deck shapes. Just landed my first healflip thanks to your tutorial. I stopped flicking with the flat part of my shoe and aimed more for the tip than the side. Those tips were key. Thanks Dan (& cameraman) Sorry for the essay. Cheers (again) from Michigan.

how tight are your hamstrings? tight hams can make it feel like your knees are going bad, but usually the bursa are getting irritated from the pressure caused by tight hamstrings

many problems from tight hamstrings - best way to loosen them is to dig your own fingers into them as hard as you can and pull them around if you can take it...do it in the hot bath if you can - . that's what a good massage therapist does..and you can do it for free.. game changer to loosen those suckers but they are maybe the hardest tendon/ muscle packs to loosen up

Dans version of “not being on his board lately” is only skating like 40 hours a week instead of 60

So the proportion between the height you pop to and the time you flick the flip is related. Pop higher, flick later. Pop smaller, flick sooner. Hella noted

one thing I noticed about Dan and his skating is that he's way more analytical than I am at my skating. He's pointing out that a flipping spot and a NOT flipping spot at only 1/2 inch difference. I had trouble wording that one. Hopefully I did ok. You know what I'm saying. I feel like to get to his level, you would HAVE to be that analytical. Or maybe not. Maybe people can get good being really feely with their shit. I donno. I'm a little franks and beans, cuz.

The number one mistake I see people make is bad weight distribution, particularly leaning their head way too far forward, so their board ends up behind them instead of underneath them. Most of the time, when I make kids aware of their head, they land their heelflips really quickly afterward.
