Hahaha spot on about those tone match presets. Brute forcing an IR to match doesn’t take any skill to dial in, may as well just use what you have and dial in by ear and it’ll work better. TJ’s Kemper Profiles are hit and miss at best too, and most i’ve heard don’t sound good. I do sell Helix Presets that are dialled in to match my real amps but they aren’t relying on IR’s to do it - it’s more of getting the Helix model’s advanced parameters and settings calibrated so my starting point is familiar to how I set the real things. I’ve no doubt that the Helix and other modellers have been able to accurately match the tone of real amps for years already without the need to buy anything new

I think you should do a video about pickups, I learned you want mostly high-mid focused pickups with bass and low-mids rolled off that can be compensated post distortion, you want those frequencies to hit the distortion last so the fundamentals of each notes in a chord dont clash when the distortion creates new harmonics for them

@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy 2 жыл бұрын
I think it is due to the Dual Cab block having two different mic/cab combinations? I've started to embrace the idea that maybe having a slight mismatch is more akin to real life anyway where the amp is never directly in the centre of our actual ears? I dunno. Might be bs.

On the subject of Tone Match ir's/presets. I've never, ever bought presets for Helix, or any other modeller I've used over the years, as I've never seen the point of paying someone for something I can do myself. I have bought IR's from a few companies such as Celestion, Ownhammer, 3Sigma, and ML SoundLab. I never use stock cabs. Anyway, I was interested in trying out one of these Tone Match preset packs, so I purchased a recent one of a Marshall amp and, I can say that I was pretty impressed. After a little bit of tweaking to taste, I used it in rehearsal last night, and it sounded and felt great. I've used Helix since 2017, played hundreds of gigs, and had great results but, I did think the tone and feel I was getting from my slightly tweaked Tone Match presets last night, was very close to using a real valve amp. Helix is obviously perfectly usable out of the box. That's why I've stuck with it but, I also think Tone Matching, if it's done well, can elevate it's tone and feel, a little more.
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy 2 жыл бұрын
The thing for me is that in any of the amp comparisons that I've done, when you use like for like IRs, the Helix models are already far closer than I've heard in the AB comparisons, and if you're making tweaks to the preset then the "match" IR that has been created (although looking at examples to me it looks like relatively normal IR with a hefty high cut) is no longer really a factor. The conclusion I came to from trying them is that folks should really get friendly with the Cab high cut and you can then get the same kind of results.
@stevegardiner8473
@stevegardiner8473 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnathancordy I've tried many times to get the tones I want from the stock cabs, still do occasionally, and I'll think, ooh that sounds nice, but then I'll drop a quality ir in instead and suddenly it's just that little bit more 'real' and sweeter sounding, and trust me, I do know my way around Helix, I should do after five years! I was sceptical about these Tone Match things. I'm glad I've tried one though. And it's not just me. My bandmates commented on my tone last night, and I hadn't said anything about running different presets. Maybe these things won't work for everyone but, I absolutely loved my tone last night. I'll sum it up by saying the tones i had last night were punchy, dynamic, and cut through without any hint of harshness or fizz. It worked perfectly for the type of covers my band play. I think the great thing about Helix is the amount of choices there are for users. You can get great tones by sticking with it completely stock, or you can invest in some additional stuff. A bit of a minefield I know. I've bought IR's from some companies that for me are totally useless, and a waste of money. Maybe I just got lucky with this particular Tone Match preset I bought. It just works really well for me.

Nice patches and tutorials - I bought your pack (with no dodgy discount code!) super value : ) Just wanted to ask why you put some of the FX in a parallel path? Presumably (FX + dry) in parallel with (dry). I tried it and can't quite decide if it sounds better... I think you just get a bit more dry level this way because you sum the 2 parallel paths? Sorry if I'm talking nonsense... Like the channel - some interesting stuff - and great for HX Stomp nerds. Have you thought about getting/demoing the new UAFX Amp pedals?
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy 2 жыл бұрын
A few people have asked about the UA stuff, but I can't really figure out if it'd be worth it as I feel like there's a ton of paid videos already and it's an expensive pedal that ultimately after the rush people may not be that interested in? I don't always put things on the parallel path - in this case I think it was something I was messing with at the time because I was also putting things like modulation post delay or something...Not sure. But yeh - you're basically getting more dry level, nothing particularly crazy otherwise going on!

@@johnnathancordy I have the UAFX Ruby, to me the dinamic response and feel are superior to my hx stomp. Right now I'm using the Ruby in the Stomp fx loop having the ability to put virtual pedals before and after it and having the amp and cab models done by the Ruby, or to run parallel amps putting an amp in the Stomp too. Super versatile imo.

@@valebliz essentially what we do with an iridium only no midi and no real need as it is the one amp and not 3. How do you find dialing in the ruby vs the stomp equivalent vox models ?
@valebliz
@valebliz 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlecBourneMidiMadScientist i find the Ruby easier tbh, you have more limited options but pretty much any setting take makes sense sounds very good, while on the stomp you have much more options and you can steer away from a realistic representation of the modeled amp quite a bit. Anyway the main difference is in feel and in how the low end reacts. You have a more realistic low end thump like amp in the room and the modeler is very touch sensitive. I really wish they release something like a JCM 800 or a SLO 100 pedal in the near future because mixed with the stomp effects and a couple of drive pedals in the front it would be my holy grail tbh.

The boys on the guitar world forums are saying you can’t play Butterfly by Crazy Town. I’ve said you can and You don’t make me want to look like a liar, do you, Mate?

Oh and before anyone comes at me saying there’s also women on the guitar world forum, there isn’t. Look around you lads, the only women on these things are porn bots looking to get access to your KZbin accounts.

Most of the guys that sell Helix/HX presets already sell on their own sites. Dunno how you can share presets between Quad Cortex devices, but if you want to sell, create your own platform (Wix or Squarespace) or find one that is selling in name of multiple artists. The device is not a factor, the same applies to Boss devices. I have my own ear, so I don't have a need for them.

Yip. David Hislop soon followed. Interestingly - Glenn DeLaune has been doing it for a while and calling it "Custom Sound Imprint™ IR". In fairness to each of them, they sound pretty decent, if not perfect for certain genres - but it's not particularly fair to imply that the Helix engineers don't know what they're doing... Think I'm seeing your mate Andy next week

@@johnnathancordy cool, he lives down the road, you should come visit Texas! But about the L6 engineers, have you seen the threads on the gear page were Eric Klein admitting that until recently they hadnt had the proper technology to correctly model cabs and that 3.2 will be the by far the biggest tonal improvement to date?

We never once said that Helix engineers didn’t know what they were doing. Actually we’ve had conversations with many of them, and we are incredibly grateful for line 6 and the product offerings they’ve brought to the market.

Of course you are. How else would you con people into paying you a “discounted” price of 160 bucks for 20 more matchless presets. You guys know what you’re doing is shady. I could go further but I won’t, Out of respect for Mr Cordys channel. Enjoy amp shopping and 200 dollar steaks boys. You only live once. Might as well take advantage of gullible people while you’re here. 🤷‍♂️ 😬

@@dogscangrowbeardsallover3143 You know, if a person doesn't want to spend money on a preset from us, they don't have to. Or they could download any of our free stuff (which we've made a lot). People who do buy our stuff do so because they think it sounds great. I can't understand this idea that we are grifters, or that what we are doing is shady. I've also never had a $200 steak before in my life, but I am planning to buy more amps. You can believe what you want about us, that's fine. But I've spent literally thousands of hours of my life creating free content to help equip guitar players that has nothing to do with selling presets. You can spend literally hundreds and hundreds of hours going through it if you'd like I like Cordy a lot - I think he's a great player and a great guy, and he makes great content. This video perplexed me a bit, but whatever.

Worship Tutorials figured out a way to hack helix to use profiles of their own amps using IR's (typically use to capture and sim real world cab/mic configurations). Tone Junkies and at least one other channel has jumped on the bandwagon, but I'm not sure if what their doing has the same substance as what WT is doing. My instinct tells me that the Tone Junkies product is more sizzle than steak, but I really have no idea. The first WT 'tone matched' package got released the other day, for the Matchless C-30 (Matchstick in helix) amp. It was only $6, and I think it's way better than the stock amp. But the question remains... if I put the work into getting to know all the settings the way John advocates here, could I have gotten the same tone without spending $6? ... Maybe, I don't know. But I'd rather keep the IR's than have my $6 back, if that tells you anything.

@@williamnichols6253 But in what way "hack"... Sounds like some good ol' snake oil... Especially if they're still just IR's
