idk if its proper form, but i can do barre chords easily when i really push my thumb into the back of the neck. im basically pinching my thumb and index finger together through the neck if that makes sense, just like a capo.

The best way to get used to barring chords, is to replace your strings with a lower gauge. This is like training wheels on a bike, because the more easier to press on it, the more you get used to it. Eventually, calluses and strength may form on your index and thumb. So you may get ready on higher gauges. I recommend 0.9 or 10-gauge strings, like D'Addario or elixir.

And eventually if you decide to learn theory you won't ever use that shape again😁

Idk.. about that. Barre chords are very useful, versatile, and applicable across almost any style/genre of music. Used frequently by most all guitarists. And barre chords are a great foundation for advancing into basic pentatonic scales. Saying they would never use that shape after they learn/study theory is just... wrong.

@@jacobwaters9675you can get the same sound with a similar shape without the full barre though. Even when learning your E shape in the CAGED system you don't rely on a full barre, you just bridge the top two strings and play the rest of the E shape. That isn't even mentioning that there are so many better voicings for those chords than a regular barre chord...

Best way I learned bar chords was not over long sessions Play things you enjoy and every other couple minutes make the shape until you ring all the strings clear and then maybe once more Even if you’re just walking by your guitar on the way to the kitchen…pick it up and make the shape once correctly and then put it down Before you know it you will make the chord effortlessly

It’s been around a month or so of me learning guitar, my wrist hurts from trying to do Bm and c#m chords. I can’t slide efficiently either. Definitely see improvement but nowhere near close to perfection I think the chord progression I’ve been learning to do is: Bm, Em, C#m, A for Midland - Drinking problem

My first instrument was the ukulele, so a lotttt translated over to the guitar. The only thing is these damn bar chords. On the ukulele, it was never a problem. On the guitar, it’s my biggest problem

Another thing that I could suggest is that you don’t push your fingers onto the fretboard, but instead try pushing the guitar towards your fingers and it might work. I took me so long to get the barre chords sound right, and I still screw up, but still it will come to you with enough practice. And of course your fingers will hurt a bit through the process. Keep up the good work, never give up.

Try it with the thumb over, it may not be comfortable and may not work for you but if it does it's a very valid way to play a chord, regardless of what some rule enforcers may say. Sure some ways to play things are more efficient depending on the previous and next chord but if you're playing the notes you're intending to play then it isn't right or wrong.
