MrS98VAC Simple. You see back then (and you could argue even now) whites were convinced that WASP superiority was ordained by God and reinforced by what whites contributed to history. This goes all the way back to their justification of slavery which even after the Civil War carried on into the 20th century.

Sean Furlong I know that, and you forgot Jews. But I mean within the past mmm.. 40 to 50 years. Look either way, its a shame that we separate ourselves like this. When you look at it with an educated mind you cant understand how America was just so utterly stupid, I mean to base someone's character and potential on something as stupid as color of skin, national origin, religion, orientation, etc is just utterly stupid. We dont discriminate based on eye or hair color. In fact when you look at the history of the US the ONLY group that has never been subject to discrimination were rich white anglo-saxon christian males.

The way the mother seems to despise Hilly's father and how he turned her daughter into an asshole when she says "he ruined you" makes me really wonder what kind of man he was and what he did to Hilly's mother
@wickedwitchoftheeast883 жыл бұрын
He was probably a snobby, spiteful racist like Hilly is. Believe it or not Hilly is actually much more spiteful in the book than the movie. She has no boundaries, is an interfering busybody and walks around like a Queen bee. She tells people after the dress ripping incident at the benefit that Celia is a drunk and compulsive liar who tricked Johnny into marrying her because she was pregnant. She also sends Celia a nasty passive-aggressive letter telling her she is more or less banned from the Junior League and any future benefits and asks for $200 for the ripped dress. That's why Celia wrote the cheque out addressed to "Two Slice Hilly" lol. Mrs Walters although she is nowhere near as bad as Hilly she does make Minny replace something she broke and charges her double what it was worth although other than that I think she did treat Minny well to some extent because she does give Minny a nice reference to Celia and Minny stops Mrs Walters from eating the pie and Mrs Walters reaction to the pie is funnier in the book she basically tells Hilly she deserved it and not to go tattling on Minny or she'd be known around town as the woman who ate two slices of Minny's shit! 😂😂 that pie was poetic justice because in the book it details Hilly's Home Help Sanitation Initiative which is full of racist bull shit about the diseases black people carry and how dangerous is it for white people to catch them, that's why Skeeter deliberately didn't put it in the news letter because she was so disgusted by it. Also a few of the society ladies do work it out that Hilly is the woman in the pie story despite her vehemently denying the book is about Jackson. One of them even tells Skeeter that she was so touched by what her maid wrote about her she has no intention of firing her and she'll be telling Hilly that if she brings up again and that Hilly deserved that pie and more and she will be voting Hilly out as President of the Junior League LOL Hilly gets her come uppance in the book only Elizabeth and a couple of others are loyal to her the rest are done with Hilly.

@@Cloudipy you should definitely read the book its brilliant! The movie is pretty accurate but it does deviate from the book so there are some differences. It really shows how Minny and Celia slowly build trust and talk and confide in one another and it goes into more detail about Celia and Johnny's relationship. Johnny is a sweetheart in the book he worships the ground Celia walks on and 100% has her back he doesn't give a fuck what people think about him marrying Celia. He and Minny meet much earlier as well Johnny comes home early whilst Celia is out and meets Minny, they talk and he confides in Minny I won't spoil it but he basically tells Minny to carry on working like normal as if he doesn't know as he wants Celia to tell him herself when she's ready. It also goes into more detail about Constantine and her life which is really heartbreaking and her relationship with Skeeter. It also details the other maids stories the good and bad. In the book Minny never worked for Hilly Yule Mae did. At the start she's still working for Mrs Walters but Hilly decides to put her in a nursing home, sell her house and take whatever she liked of her mother's belongings. She offered Minny to come and work for her but Minny turns her down because she didn't want to put Yule Mae out of a job as they're friends. Hilly even offers Minny a pay rise and she still said no. So in retaliation Hilly tells everyone Minny is a thief and when Minny finds out why she can't find employment that's when she bakes and gives Hilly the pie right before Mrs Walters goes into the home. Hilly is so smug and says to Minny "I knew I'd get my way in the end" and when the penny drops about what went into the pie Mrs Walters laughs and tells Hilly "I wouldn't go tattling on Minny now Hilly or you'll be known as the one who ate two slices of Minny's shit" fucking savage 😂😂😂😂

Laura Butlerr racism is an old weed. an ugly weed. and it's not like other weeds in which it can ever be turned into something good or useful, the way dandelions can be used in salads and wines. it's something that needs to be eradicated completely from the face of the earth. the only problem is that the roots go so deep. it's been, what, fifty years since the Civil Rights movement in America? and we can still feel the roots underneath our feet.

@mozambiquemorbid24412 жыл бұрын
Probably the cruelest aspect of this scene was that Mrs. Walters is still culpable for what’s going on around her. While yes, her dementia softened her, at least the book acknowledges that she used to be just as racist and spiteful as Hilly. But now that part of her is gone and she can’t remember it, and so only now does she show humanity when it’s too late. All she can do is be spiteful to Hilly when she overrules her (“Daddy ruined you”) but what good does it do? It only reads as Walters trying to absolve herself, of course it does undo who she was before the dementia, and pisses off Hilly. And of course, it ends with all this being taken out on Minnie.
@Bloombaby9910 жыл бұрын
"Daddy ruined you." So, according to Hilly's mother it's her father's fault she's vindictive, racist, and heartless? She should bear responsibility, too. For starters, not allowing her daughter to be so disrespectful. Just my opinion.

Unfortunately there were people who thought that way. Years of conditioning were included in that. Thankfully, people thought otherwise.

I'm glad they went with this scenario rather than what was in the book. More dramatic buildup.

catbot158 I didn't read the book, how did the scene happen there?
@catbot1587 жыл бұрын
It's been awhile, but what I remember is that when Mrs. Walters was being put into the retirement home, Hilly offered to replace her own maid with Minny, but when Minny refused, Hilly called all her friends to make sure Minny wouldn't be hired by anyone in town.
@LaKellita6 жыл бұрын
MediaLover194 it didn't. I saw the movie before reading the book and nearly went crazy trying to find this part. In the book, Minny baked the pie because Hilly sent her mother to a nursing home, causing Minny to lose her job. She then went around telling everyone Minny was a their so no one would hire her. She wanted to force Minny to work for her. So Minny made the pie...

The need to feel supreme and superior is fueled by hate, Please stop looking for a way to making racism seem okay.. It is not.

I was raised in the 60”s , we had a maid But we didn’t look at her as a maid . We loved her . I had five sisters and three brothers and my father felt my mother needed the help , he worked out of town all week . My mother treated her with respect as us kids did . Every house it seemed had a maid . We lived in the south . My father got transferred to the north so we had to say goodbye to our second mother (maid) us kids cried for many of days of not having her . I was blessed to have a mother that taught me it’s not the colored of a persons skin we’re all the same . It’s what is in their hearts that counts

Eventually this was the last time Minny was treated badly. When she was hired by Celia, everything changed.

+SpoonfulOf Books there is such a thing as economic slavery. . If society recognized that and what was being done to African Americans... It wouldn't be so widespread today. Living your entire life with debts, unable to truly pull yourself up and take care of yourself and responsibilities no matter how hard you work is a tell tale sign of actually being. .. Enslaved. . Or do you not see that? Maybe you don't....

What I've never understood is if she thought Minny had diseases, why would she eat food prepared by her or allow her to care for the white children. It is totally messed up thinking.
