Chris Farley was so believable playing characters that were 30+ years older than he was, because he imitated his own father so well. Many American men that were born & raised around the time of the Great Depression, spoke like Chris Farley's elder characters did. What was hilarious, was the way that Chris could take all of these older men's expressions and mannerisms and "condense them" into characters that made audiences explode with laughter. Bob Odenkirk, who wrote many of Chris' sketches at Second City and SNL, said people told him that Chris Farley was the funniest comedian on the planet.

Chris Farley was the first celebrity death that hurt me in my life. I was 15 and loved Chris Farley. Never missed snl. I don’t think any celebrity death has ever cut me deeper than that I named my goofy English bulldog Farley after the great Chris; and it’s wonderful to see I’m not the only person who misses and remembers Chris. What a legend. Adam Sandler’s song on SNL was just too bittersweet

same! i was 13 at the time and my spanish teacher always let me and a couple others do our own version of snl skits in class on slow days without much work and we would do the motivational speaker and I would do Harry Carey skits to. And Chris Died like right before christmas and i was legitimately heart broken for quite a while after his death it hit me and my dad hard :( was a sad xmas/winter. They say Chris had finished 85-95 percent of his dialogue for playing Shrek and I wish they would make a cut of the movie with him as the voice as a dedication to his legacy. It would sell like crazy.

@@caleblawson35 Firing someone cause they have a movie career going doesnt make any sense from a financial perspective and Billy madison came out basically when tommy boy did. Its weird these two were fired as a package and i dont get the Farley part either, since its during his three years sober period. Firing him for being clean but not trusting him and send him to Hollywood alone, what could possibly go wrong??? I will have to read the Book. Lorne michaels blames the network, talking about a generational change. The plot thickens...

OH MY GOSH! This has always been one of my favorite SNL skits, and it has become prophetic for me. My parents moved states last Christmas break, and I only had one year left of college at my local university. It was already paid for, but I didn't have enough money for rent, so I thought I was going to either have to drop out or live on the streets to finish school. My friend's parents (who I didn't really know at the time) needed a house sitter, so I was suggested to do it. When I got there to get the keys and whatever, they asked me what I was going to do with my parents moving and when I said that I had no idea, they told me I could just live with them for the year so that I could graduate. I have become the Herlihy boy. They don't have any plants to water, but I do bring in the mail.

Robert Smigel pointed out this skit in a recent interview and said of Sandler: "[The Herlihy Boy] wasn't structured like any sketch you've ever seen, and Sandler was one of the few people who were reinventing sketch structure back then. A lot of us were just writing 'simple premise escalates...' shit, and they were smart, and funny, but, they weren't as inventive, they weren't as fresh. He was just so pure, he brought so much originality to the show. He didn't fit any mold, he was in his own world, he had all these voices you'd never heard done in comedy before--a couple of them were derivative....[I]t was a sophisticated idea cloaked in a nonsensical silly voice." Sandler isn't my favorite SNL alum, but is is interesting to hear a comedy pro look at his work and find some depth there that many people assume doesn't exist. I can see some Monty Python absurdism in The Herlihy Boy, some John Cleese specifically. Though the skits I love the most probably are "a simple premise that escalates", like Bill Hader's great skit about the Grenada war veteran who takes a puppeteering class.
