How were they "generally disarmed"? They were trained and armed as a Kibbutz defence force and were able to hold off and kill dozens of armed Hamas terrorists before the Army arrived to help them. The Army who are well trained and heavily armed were the ones late to the battle with some Kibbutz having to wait anything from four to seventeen hours before they were reinforced.
