Either my memory is completely whack, or those citizens were active military, reservists, police and such. It works better in Switzerland where most of the males are reservists who have already served their mandatory military duty and have a government issued rifle and ammunition at home. Not surprisingly, those who want to disarm Americans conveniently overlook the Swiss example.

It looks like he trained quite a bit and also invested in equipment and supplies, and that training and investment paid off. He was not a sudden hero. He prepared for the role. I forgot who said it but, paraphrasing, the difference between a brave soldier and one who runs is training.
