Late and also not exactly the best video I've made. Here's your January video...2 days late.
Not exactly proud of my work here. Constructive criticism is honestly expected and welcomed, especially for this video. It's pretty bad in terms of structure and 'cleanness', so if you have any feedback leave them in the comments below!
Thanks for watching.

[10:13] I think it should be emphasized that we are not the villain of "THE" story (that is, the game itself) due to the morally ambiguous nature of Project Moon games. Rather, we are the villain of PHILIP'S story. I also think Philip's view of who his enemies are actually ties into why he distorted into the Crying Children (to be clear, most of this is just my interpretation). As you described, Philip started out by thinking he was truly acting righteously and selflessly, until he eventually accepted that this was false and decides to act on his own behalf. BOTH of these beliefs can lead someone to adopt the mindset of "if you're not on my side, you're against me." Obviously Philip didn't express this right away - he genuinely wanted to believe that he could get sympathy Wedge Office, for example. However, when he was instead told how much of a fool he was (and when he was rejected by Yuna, to a lesser extent), something seems to have broke in him. Rather than trying to work with others towards a concept of "justice" he thought they all agreed on, he decided to become a lone wolf and work towards _his own_ "justice." Philip's final mistake was when he shifted his mentality to see EVERYONE who wasn't on his side as his enemy. This can be seen in his conversation with the Yuna and Salvador illusion where he actually just _made up stuff_ to paint them as the bad guys (funnily enough, you could interpret the fake Salvador's comments as Philip's "good side" trying to stop him from going further). The idea that the whole world was his enemy is, I believe, the possible root of his distortion. When everyone is emotionally attacking you, you will reach a point where you simply want to _get away_ to a place where you don't have to interact with anyone. It's "see/hear/speak no evil" because he thinks those around him are all evil, and letting them have their way ("speaking") would be too. Lastly, I can't help but wonder if this is why his form changed after meeting the Reverberation Ensemble - it's like a part of his core beliefs were proven wrong by finding friends, and he became more rational because of it (rather than just mindlessly destroying the Nest). We didn't see this sort of "reversion" with any other Ensemble members so it is a very curious thing.
@HazIosefka

I actually agree - that part was inaccurately phrased, and is only really there to be 'dramatic', almost. It should've definitely been phrased as 'a' villain, in my opinion. I left it in because it was the best take I had, and I was also running out of time...after all, I doubt there will ever be 'THE' villain, other than cases like the Distortion that affect the City in its entirety and in mostly negative ways. That's actually true. It's almost scary how someone in reality could actually easily fall into the same mindset of 'If you're not a part of the solution, you're part of the problem'. I can see how Philip fell into the same trap, thanks for pointing that out! Actually really interesting. I think I disagree with your perspective on *why* Philip distorted, though. The way I see it, Philip's insecurities were what got the better of him, in the end. The reason both the Salvador and Yuna illusions look down upon him so much is because that's what he thought they would say, if they could see him now. Salvador, scolding him for him jumping to conclusions, and Yuna, for not understanding her and Salvador's 'relationship', if it existed. He distorted because he didn't want to hear his beloved senior and master reprimand and berate him. It would be better if he couldn't offend anyone, or be offended. It would be better for everyone if he were to 'not see, hear and speak'. In the same way people cope with arguing with people they care about, he shuts up, doesn't listen, and closes his eyes. I do think believing 'everyone was against him' was a reason he distorted, though only in terms of the 'unhearing' child. Everyone is against me anyways, so why listen? In the same vein, the 'unseeing' child formed because he no longer wanted to see the damage he has caused and take responsibility for what he has done. The 'unspeaking' child formed because he no longer wanted to offend others, and argue with them. He had enclosed himself. All he does now is lash out at those around him. He goes on a rampage in grief, angry at 'everything'. In his Key Page story, he says that he joined the 'troupe' to be happy. I'd assume Argalia gave him a speech, telling him that he'd be happy if they manage to create the perfect world with the Library's light - but I don't think this is why his form changed. I believe his form changed because he got a coping mechanism. Philip knows how much damage he has done, but he doesn't really care anymore. He is inoffensive, and cannot be offended. In particular - he doesn't see the point in earning anything, simply because those things will be lost eventually. Why see, why hear, why speak, if all those things will be lost to the inevitable march of time anyways? Why be angry and sad at what you have lost? All it does is continue your suffering to no end. The reason his form changed is because his thinking changed - from 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' to 'there is no point in seeing, hearing, and speaking'. There are no such principles of 'good' or 'evil' in his mind anymore. If you look at Philip's Ensemble form closely, the hands around his face make him smile, while covering his mouth and ears. 'Smile, and move on.' There's no further need to think about it. At least, that's how I see it. This was a pretty interesting read! Thanks for writing it, means a lot.

Actually, according to Project Moon and the creator of Wonderlab, it is possible to undistort a person, but it is very difficult since you need to convince someone to accept themselves and move towards changing, instead of staying in the mindless fantasy of a distortion. So practically you still wouldn't be able to bring Philip back, but technically it is possible.
@HazIosefka
@HazIosefka 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was *heavily* implied with Catt. I didn't bring it up because of the weirdness of it all? If you haven't finished the game, spoilers ahead. By 'never coming back', I meant due to the fact that he was booked *after* the release of the light - he nearly has *zero* chance of coming back, in the same way that Argalia and the rest of the ensemble are 'permanently dead'. The point of contention here would be Philip's 'Unstable Book of the Crying Children'. Only one crying child ran away at the end of the Reception of the Crying Children, and we 'partly booked' Philip, as a result. The ramifications of this is odd - it drops Philip's EGO, so it obviously contains an important part of him. But it's a booked version of two of his Crying Children, out of three. Even if he did 'undistort', what would the result be? Would there be a change in his physical state? Mentally, he's definitely changed. He's lost that 'unspeaking child', as it's the only one that ran away at the end of the Crying Children reception. All that would remain is the 'unhearing child' and the 'unseeing child' - it's a curious case. I would be hyped as fuck if he undistorted as those two, because what would he become? No one really knows. Good point though!

I always find weird how people are so focus on the "philip's a coock" part. Personally i always thought it was just his own inecuacy and self-doubt. Keep in mind, Yuna is several years older than Philip, and he has bad self-steam, so always thought this part expose how philip doubt himself about Yuna interest in him "She sees me as a child" "not like i have a chance" "How i would be a man when Salvador right here is all i wont" Basicly, he sees Salvaxor with respect but also a little jealousy. So, when he try to see himself as a man he compares to the closest he has, Salvador, a smoke war veteran, with fame, an office and a family, how could he compare. That is why the illusion never address Salvador as a cheater, or womanizer. Is not that Salvador has an afair with Yuna, but that Yuna would never acept someone as weak as Philip, even more with a man like Salvador right there.
@HazIosefka
@HazIosefka 2 жыл бұрын
That part about him being a cuck was more of a comedic bit, yeah - there are *three* crying children for a reason, after all - each a different insecurity he holds with himself. However, I don't think that age gap was prevalent in Philips thoughts, nor do I think that a feeling of inadequacy is what caused the 'cuck' moment. First of all - let's get this out of the way. Philip didn't think he had a chance because he didn't WANT to think he had a chance. "Although seonbae didn’t decline my confession outright, it felt safer to think of it as a refusal so I wouldn’t get my head in the clouds and make another attempt at it." - Unstable Page of the Crying Children And because of that, he came to the least sane conclusion, in order to cope. "She didn't have that much reason to reject me, so she must have another guy...and the only other guy prevalent in her life is..." It was easier for him to think of it that way. To vilify Yuna. She's the same as everyone else - she's the bad one. She rejected him for no other reason than that Salvador was already doing her. In the end, after he distorts, he admits it. "Nothing is more beautiful than knowing the truth, and therefore, nothing must be more shameful than admitting that what one believed in was a lie. I could’ve sworn I acknowledged my vice and embraced it." - Unstable Page of the Crying Children I pointed out that Salvador *rejected* the idea that he was sleeping with Yuna - for good reason. It's a delusion, and a part of Philip knows that. Philip knows he was lying to himself. He knows that he wasn't cucked - he knows that it isn't Yuna's fault that she rejected him. He knows that Yuna was probably still considering it - as relationships just don't work out in the City. But he still believed that she was sleeping with Salvador - not because of his self-doubt, but because of delusion. It's his 'copium', for lack of better term. As always, this is an *interpretation* of his character. That being said, objectively - yes, Philip wasn't cucked, and Yuna wasn't doing it with Salvador, yeah. Just Philip being dumb sadge.

This comment is coming a year late, but I love Philip so much that I want to give my own two cents. I don’t think this was intentional on Project Moon’s part (though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was), but Philip really, really makes me think of Borderline Personality Disorder. Almost every single emotional change he goes through is characteristic of BPD: the raidly-changing self-image, the rapidly-changing thoughts of those he loves most (it’s even stated in the Unstable Page of the Crying Children that his positive feelings towards Salvador and Yuna, while strong, are also fragile, which is very common for BPD), his extreme suggestibility (all it took for him to break multiple times were essentially a few harsh words. He immediately believed everything that everyone said about him), the instant latching on to the first person who’s kind to him and trying to depend on that person for happiness. Even the Crying Children distortion reminds me of BPD, literally splitting up Philip’s unstable emotions into three different entities, and the way the Unhearing Child immediately assumes that people only have bad opinions of him is also characteristic of BPD. It’s really sad to think that Philip might have been unstable from the very beginning, and all everyone else (aside from Salvador and Yuna) ever did was kick him even further into the dirt.
@withercat1801
@withercat1801 Жыл бұрын
And to add on to this (I’m on mobile browser so can’t actually edit), the way Philip assumed that Yuna rejecting him meant that she and Salvador were having an affair is also a delusion that could be caused by BPD. Again I don’t think it was intentional on Project Moon’s part, and is more of a headcanon, but still interesting to think about.
@cereza065

this makes a lot of sense actually, and considering that project moon has a reputation for writing rather realistic takes on mental issues i wouldnt be surprised that it was precisely the intention i dont have bpd myself nor i know enough about it to make a very solid comment about it but the situation with salvador and yuna still hit close home for me because it felt like a textbook definition of an intrusive thought (which based of what you describe... kinda sounds like a thing that happens with bpd? i know theyre common in anxiety disorders and ocd, at least), dude was clearly upset when facing the fact that he thought that salvador and yuna had an affair but at the same time it's implied that he started thinking about that as a way to make himself feel better due to (what he interpreted as) yuna's rejection i would also say that pamela was also trying to be understanding, she was the only member from wedge office who didn't insult him in any way (unless commenting that he should know more about the insurance benefits of his office counts as insulting, because otherwise she only commented that while she understood his pain she also believed that he had to toughen up)
@withercat1801
@withercat1801 Жыл бұрын
@@cereza065 As far as I can tell, intrusive thoughts aren't a symptom of BPD, but imagining rejection where there isn't any is definitely a symptom. Either way, I can't discount any mental illness/disorder interpretations because Philip definitely seems to have something going on making him a lot more fragile than the average City-dweller. I think a lot of plotlines in Project Moon games would be a lot shorter if therapists existed there. Imagine if Ayin got grief counseling lol And yeah, Pamela was a lot more civil towards him than the other two Wedge Office members were. Oscar and Pameli did make some good points too, but they could have delivered them a lot more kindly.

This is an excellent video. I really liked seeing the way you broke down Philips character arc and the way he diverged from the standard cowardly lion formula. I also hadn't even considered how this might effect Oscar in the future. Spoilers Technicaly because Philip left behind the unstable book of the Crying Children in Their inventation, it is possible that ego philip is actually back in the city after the true ending. Though it is admitably unlikely. Similarly because to books of R corp characters were released and the fact it migut take a while for them to wake up in the city, there may be two versions of them running around. Which could get R Corp in trouble with the head if they don't fix that within a week. If this is true that means the Library may have also accidentaly realeased the red mist back into the city. Which I find hilarious.

Thanks! I appreciate the kind words. I think it's likelier that *the Crying Children* come back, rather than EGO Philip (even though it drops the Unstable Page of Philip's EGO). Reading the Key Page story reveals it's Philip's main thoughts while distorting, so I wouldn't be surprised if maybe one or two babies come crawling back to the Dawn Office at some point. Wonder how Salvador and Yuna will take it. Yeah, the R Corp are definitely gonna have to release the Ravens to try to clear out the extra Nikolais, Myos, Maxims *and* Rudolphs running around. Unless they want The Head involved... Not to mention that the Red Mist created in The Library is a shell of light filled with the memories of what The Red Mist can do. It's not the real deal, because that real deal died in the Head Raid on the old L Corp Lab, killing every single abnormality in the facility, 2 claws, and dying after killing Garrion, who would later become Binah. Everything from then on to do with The Red Mist is a systematic breakdown and rebuild. A former protector, revived with the belief that they failed to save anything, forced into a situation where they couldn't defend anyone, where they were fighting an unkillable enemy, where their weakest points were highlighted. That's what Gebura was put through in Lobotomy Corp, the events that took her to the brink of a total meltdown. And she came back even stronger from it after said meltdown, with a far more tempered edge to her personality. This Red Mist has none of that. It is only a shell, like all the other guests you fight inside of The Library. However, unlike them (whose actual bodies are stored in a form of stasis elsewhere in the library), there is nothing to actually throw this Red Mist out with. It is, after all, only a collection of memories and stories given a shell. That's why it cannot return, because it never existed outside of the library, and it can't exist anywhere but inside of the library. For the same reason that you can lose a fight and retry it, The Red Mist cannot exist outside of the library. Nothing on the outside of the library changes when you lose, because the people cannot actually leave the library. Except for Phillip, who somehow ran from the library physically unaided on 2 different occasions.

It's better than pretty much anywhere in the backstreets or an empty office building that can be invaded by hostiles in the team abscence for a wounded fixer. One slightly more head canony interpretation of Philip that I thought about was that we got an unstable book out of him and what happened to that unstable book when angela released everyone. I was thinking back the dialogue before Malkuth’s fight with him and about how mentally he returned to the state before ever going to the library. Given that when we defeat the crying children who are separate entities who form the whole of philip, I don’t think its too unreasonable to think even ignoring distorting Philip lost a large part of himself to the library and now is just smoldering shell. I kinda hope that when Angela released everyone that part that was sealed was the original philip so that he could return to a semi normal life with a kickass ego. Side note I really wanna go full fanfic mode with all of other characters who don’t really have a place to return to like what happens to the two different Fourth pack groups, Tomerry and the rest of love town, the first class passengers that go turned into puppets (this one especially has a lot of good plot hooks to explore has some very influential people got turned to puppets so it would be an organic way to give exposition on the other wings that weren’t the focus), and also Emma/Noah

@HazIosefka 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the unstable book is a point of contention, since he technically 'got booked twice'. Once from the reception of the Crying Children, where roughly 2/3rds of him are booked, and once during the Ensemble fights. I'd say that they'd likely come back as the crying babies, or maybe not come back at all. The only baby that truly escapes is the Unspeaking Child, so assumedly we could see the other two babies! While I would like to think he comes back as his EGO self, the credenza reveals that the books go through the thoughts he had while distorting, so I kinda doubt that we'll ever see him return as that. But yeah! The concept of release of books is something that'll have to be explored. I don't think it'd be hard to believe that there are two R. Corp packs running around, etc. Honestly, I'm curious to see what they do with Emma and Noah. The circus is gone, so...it's gonna be interesting.

And while I do dislike using the word, he comes off as one of the more insecure characters in the game, doubting his ability and strength. This self-doubt is the leading cause of what you mentioned about his hesitance, which fits with his character and humanizes him a lot, making him one of the more favored characters in the game. His speech to Malkuth especially emphasizes what you talk about in his fear of change - but I personally think for a different reason. Rather than fearing 'losing that happiness', in my opinion - Philip is more scared of 'not being able to protect that happiness'. His Ensemble Page highlights this *a lot*. "How tightly must I shut my eyes, cover my ears, and zip my mouth to keep what’s around me safe before I can feel a semblance of happiness that won’t leave me?" And it makes sense with the rest of his characterization. That self-doubt and diffidence has culminated, to the point where he doesn't see the point in having that happiness unless he can truly protect it for the rest of his existence. The deaths of the Dawn and Wedge Office proved that he didn't have the strength nor will to protect those around him, and also proved to him that he would never be able to protect anything that gives him happiness. That's...an opinion, of course. And it kind of...doesn't mean anything, cause it leads down to 'He's scared of losing the things around him' as a result, but I just really wanted to write that okay :( And yeah - he does actually have quite a few foil-like qualities to our main protagonists! Which is really cool, especially when Philip is given the chance to say his piece in several receptions. And then...also have Roland like shit on him and stuff but yes.

Geez why the hell i didn't discover you, you're damn good at this kind of video about the game i love... I'll probably gonna watch your video more once again when Limbus Company release Also the fact that made me realize is that, in Library of Ruina, we are the villain of these fellow guest's story... We are their obstacle for them to obtain the book they're desire for... We are their gate of deciding either us died or them died and turned into a book that we can use for the next "unfortunate" guest... It's really nice to see how there's a game where we're the villain of the hero's story and we have crushed a lot of the heroes in this game

@HazIosefka
@HazIosefka Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that people hate him, but more find him kind of annoying. He does show up *a lot* throughout the game, and because of that leaves much more of an impression. For the people who find him annoying, the amount of time he shows up exacerbates that and makes dislike him a lot more than if he were to show up for Wedge Office and never come back again. While, for the people that really like his character find him really cool and fun due to the amount of times he comes back. But, yeah. He's also a deeply relatable character for a lot of people, and kind of feels like he was written specifically in that way. That kind of alienates people who find it hard to find similarities between themselves and Philip, buttttttttttttttt yeah. Basically, it's more a matter of the viewer, rather than Philip themselves.

Interesting to think how similar yet different Phillip’s story is to Xiao, both tried to be selfless for another, lost the one they cared for, and turned reckless and selfish, endangering more of their friends, the stark difference is what happened, Phillip became envious and gloomy, hating himself and acting towards his self interest alone, whereas Xiao became enraged and bereaved, losing her husband cracking the stoic facade, and became reckless, trying to do as much damage to the Library before she dies, whereas Oscar’s intervention caused Philip to distort, Miris’ intervention caused Xiao to complete her E.G.O, two sides of the same coin, just with drastically different faces

That part about Phillip being ejected to the 8 o' Clock Circus: That's actually Carmen/Will of the Library doing it. It's to draw out something else for the Library to book.
@HazIosefka

Is that actually confirmed somewhere in game? I don't really remember anything about that - I just assumed that Oscar recently visited the 8 O'Clock Circus, and left the other Transporter there.
@Jelly-wy6xr
@Jelly-wy6xr 2 жыл бұрын
@@HazIosefka i don't think it's confirmed, carmen doesn't show up for most of the game and only physically shows up during keter realization so next to nothing about her is confirmed, but it would make sense why she would let him go. philip being released back into the city led to a chain of disaster dominoes that led an entire section of the liu association being baited into the library and booked, and considering that carmen was likely working together with the reverb ensemble, it'd be in her best interests to bait as many authority figures to the library as possible so she can let them wreak havoc unimpeded.

@@tv1990 I would say the same *if* Roland doesn't say what he does in The Wedge Office's Post-Battle dialogue. Here's the thing - Oscar acted overly antagonistic in almost all dialogue after Philip goes on his rant. He talks about how he'd stab Philip if he got in their way, stuff like that. But - after Philip is defeated and teleported away, Roland says this: "I didn't know that coot would put that kind of device on him...*Old Man Oscar's still not honest to himself.* Oscar talks about how trying to save others and being 'selfless' in the city is selfish in and of itself - but he goes out of his way to put a device on Philip, not to send him to his death, but to be selfless. Obviously, that's an interpretation, but Roland is a Fixer with loads of connections, even to Salvador - I'd assume that he probably met Oscar at some point, and probably has a better idea than we do. it would be pretty sick though if the next game we find out Oscar fucked Philip over intentionally. that'd be a hell of a plot line to cover with the literal tens of thousands of people that were slaughtered by The Crying Children.

which mod did you use to get philip original key page?
@HazIosefka
@HazIosefka 2 жыл бұрын
I made a mod which would drop original key pages of all enemies - but it's really buggy and you can't remove the mod's effects after (the keypages and combat pages you get remain unless you create a new save file, even after you delete the mod.) There's also a fair few other issues like the game randomly ending a fight if both the enemy and you have 'Shimmering' passives, so keep that in mind. You'll also need BaseMod for it to work, and I can't put it up on the workshop. If you're still interested, you can grab it here: drive.google.com/file/d/1GoH8LWYEckW3lZ5YUU_3Otr_JDshVnRR/view?usp=sharing I just uploaded it so Google Drive might be a bit janky. Burn the book you get from the Crying Children and the key page will show up...eventually. There's quite a few new key pages/combat pages there (Philip's 'true' EGO with Shimmering, 30-40 Blazing Strike, some Lasers, etc.) Remember - this mod permanently affects your save file. If you don't want to have extra key pages/combat pages left over, I don't recommend using it.
