I am the son of a military pilot. I express great respect to the naval pilot Richard Halsey Best. Heroes are not born, become heroes.

I met Ensign George Gay in 1983 at Tyco airshow. He signed a cover picture of Himself on the cover of Life mag. for me and gave me a signed picture of all the guys in torpedo squadron 8 just before takeoff. So awesome!

You are so fortunate. Consider that in all the people of the world, only Ensign Gay survived that day. And your fortune was to meet him. That is a moment in your life that you can hold dear. His story is the greatest to come out of the greatest battle of Midway...thank you for sharing...

@@hddun it's wonderful that he survived out of the whole group, but the fact that people met him at an air show isn't exactly a fantastic feat of chance.

Back story on Yorktown. It did not sink at the Battle of Coral Sea thanks to the quick action of Killed in Action Medal of Honor awardee Lt Milton Ricketts, USN, damage control officer. This enabled Yorktowns invaluable participation at the Battle of Midway. There were so many heroes at these pivotal battles from seamen to admirals.

As a Navy Corpsman I cared for Rear Admiral Clarence Wade McClosky at Bethesda Naval Hospital in the mid 1970's. I was in attendance when he died.

The last pic is of 1LT James P. Muri and his crew in front of their aircraft, the Martin B-26B "Suzi Q". His story of the Battle of Midway is fascinating as well. The entire crew was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for their efforts at the Battle of Midway.

Tom Cruise narration, the greatest star of his generation, and he does not outshine the men featured in the video.

I was working defense contract at PAX when the movie came out after being stationed there. A few of us went to see it and laughed hysterically at it as it is so far from the truth. We had a F-14 pilot in one of the squadrons there he was a fighter weapons school grad, as well as a test pilot school grad. Complete opposite of what they portrayed in that joke of a recruiting movie. For all who think that's what the Navy is really like sign the papers raise your hand and join if you've got the spine. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!

Excellent job of narration. Tom Cruise has a great speaking voice and it shows in this piece--I hope he does more of these history segments and I like Gary Sinise, Tom Hanks, and Charlton Heston.

The real heroes were Richard Halsey Best, Nimitz and Edwin Layton. Richard destroyed 2 carrier ships in just one day he was leading squadron 6. Layton and a bunch of codebreakers predicted that pearl harbor was gonna get attacked but the commander before Nimitz didn't believe it.and then Layton and Nimitz predicted the midway attack. Huge respect for those 3 people

Most of the footage was from Ford's film "The battle of Midway." Which was originally shot in color. The Japanese carrier's did not have strike aircraft spotted, or being refueled on the flight deck. . Other than that a good presentation. Nice Tom Cruise did the narration.
