Snape less-than-perfectly embodies the first stanza of Rudyard Kipling's poem "If." "If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise..." He did dabble in lies and gave in a little bit to his hate, but by gum he kept his head and waited patiently when everyone doubted him.

Snape was so good at playing the part of a bitter Death Eater that the debate about whether he was a good man or an evil continues to this day. For me, his snide comments, his favoritism, his coldness, his harshness can be seen as an abused man visiting the abuse he suffered onto other but I see it as a sign of his commitment to atone and to make the sacrifices neccessary to defeat Riddle count

One can agree/consent ehile still having reluctance or misgivings. Snape did agree, though indirectly, to kill Dumbledore when he agreed to protect Draco at all costs. It's been a while since my last read through or watch, but I believe Draco already had his orders to kill Dumbledore, and Narsissa informed Snape when he made that Unbreakable Vow with her. Please correct me if I'm wrong about the timeline of these things.

I understand this really well when you deal with your own demons. Whether be depression, addiction or other rather negative things such as narcissism. Abuse stuff, you're either gonna end up totally twisted. And broken into millions of pieces. Oh, you're gonna come out strong. Or you're just gonna basically let your demons consume. You and instead trapped in the darkness. As a person who suffers with depression myself it's pretty easy to understand snape .and And he chose vengeance. Yes, but some people become martyrs, which snape also became a martyr, and others commit suicide, and some become totally obsessed with light and Religion, they are all ways of the body defending itself. Against some kind of trauma and in other videos. I've seen about snape that goes into detail He was a victim of domestic violence in his own home. When he was a child, he was neglected and largely ignored and coming from a family like that myself. Another reason why I understand snape very well

He was an evil person who did good things for the wrong reasons. It was never about Harry, it was always about his obsession with Lily. He was a teacher who bullied his students. If Voldemort hadn't decided to go after Lily's son, but the Longbottoms instead, Snape would still have been a death eater. I more often see people making Snape out to be a good guy, than nothing but a villain. And that's just wrong too. He's not pure evil, he's not pure good, he's an extremely well written, grey character.

Snape was an amazing character through book 5. I always believed he was a double agent on Dumbledore's side. I believed he had a grudge against Voldemort about something Voldemort did not know about. I believed Voldemort killed a Muggle who happened to be Snape's dad. I assumed due to the discriptions, that the man Eileen was fighting with in OOTP was her dad, Snape's grand father. You know, having issues because Eileen married a Muggle. I assumed the neglect was the grandfather, where they had to live after the death of his father. Then comes book 6, where Lily is randomly tossed in. Some see this rubbish as romantic. I see it as more of JKR's sick twisted dysfunctional relationships, her own reflections, which I feel you should do a video about as it is clearly an author thing when it repeats so many times.Rowling clearly writes Lily and Snape as not even friends in book 5, thus he called her a mud-blood. He called her this because to his mind, she is a random Gryffindor pretending to defend him to annoy James, with whom she is playing cat and mouse/hard to get. So knowing this he insults her. Until JKR needs a relationship to explain everything again in book 6. Come on, romantics! If he and Lily were really friends, he'd have just loved her defending him to James. He'd have loved having something James did not and he never would've insulted her. Bella L

Ssectumsempra per canon was developed when Snape was tricked into confronting Lupin in his werewolf form though James horrified by what Sirius had done helped rescue Snape Sirius was not punished for nearly getting Snape killed ostensibly because Dumbledore feared the influential Black family would seek vengeance against Lupin and his lycanthropy would be disclosed and he would suffer punishment for his lycanthropy

To paint Severus Snape as an innocent victim and to therefore justify his actions as a teacher is, to me, revictimizing those of us who suffered at the hands of real people who behaved in this fashion. What you have said would make sense if he had not been such an abuser of his authority over the children entrusted to his care through education. If this character had used the memory of Lily to truly aid Harry without going out of his way to be cruel, dismissive and abusive I'd be happy to concede the point. As it is, everything he did for Harry was on Dumbledore’s orders and not at all of his own volition. The movies did much damage in shading the truth of this authoritarian abuser. If he had been acting he would have been able to state his true feelings around Dumbledore - which the memories he left Harry show he, in fact did. He chose to see Harry as a facsimile of his father and not as his mother’s son. He chose to commit psychological torture and to encourage the students in his house to do likewise - a heinous crime. He even went out of his way to be alone with Harry so that he could abuse him (reference his collecting Harry from Hogsmeade Station in HBP). Like all authoritarian abusers, he never committed the worst of his crimes where other teachers could see. In fact, on the single occasion where his teaching was under observation (Umbridge’s inspection in OotP) he actually responded professionally when Harry messed up his potion by ordering him to write an essay on the correct manufacture of the potion and where he went wrong. This, to me, proves that he could be professional when he was of a mind (or when he was being observed). This is classic behaviour by abusive authorities. I should know; I grew up with such people. When he was killed off I, too, was sad. Of course, the commitment and dedication he showed to his ‘real’ job, and without support, was remarkable. That, and the simulacrum of love which he showed for lily, were signs that he was redeemable and that his death meant he would not have the chance to be a truly good and noble individual, to learn self-awareness and emotional intelligence, to learn to truly love and be loved. That, to me, is his true tragedy.
@zanibalbaiaty9389

In fact, he was not obliged to protect Harry, because the deal he made with Dumbledore was in exchange for Lily's life, but he did not succeed and she died, so the deal was annulled. The most important thing is that he was also a student and under the care of the teachers, but he did not receive any care from them. On the contrary... Hogwarts is a full place. Racist, and he could give troublemakers and bullies an advantage just because they were in Gryffindor. He was excluded, and the only ones who were accused of becoming his friends were crazy people obsessed with the dark arts. So why wouldn't he do the same with the students if that was always okay? Also, the films are not a distortion or theft from the books, but rather a depiction of them. If Rowling approved of them, it is because she does not see a distortion of her characters.
@RiseeRee
@RiseeRee Жыл бұрын
@@zanibalbaiaty9389 Saying it’s not a distortion because JK “approved” of stuff doesn’t make much sense to me. There are character moments and scenes that are completely opposite of how they are in the books. For example, movie Hermione steps in front of Harry as a human shield, when Ron does that in the book. Movie Hermione chooses to help the trio escape Gringotts on a dragon, when it was Harry in the book and Book Hermione is scared of flying. Or how Movie Ron knew about the dragon and went on this roundabout thing to inform Harry without speaking to him, when in fact Book Ron had no idea and it would be really out of character for him to behave that way. Characters in the books are often very different in the movies, and Snape is no different. For example, they have Movie Snape shield the children from Werewolf Lupin, whereas in the books he is knocked out, unconscious. They don’t have him indicate that he didn’t care about Harry when he did his patronus in Dumbledore’s office. They don’t have him poison Neville’s toad or embarrass Hermione when she was hit with the teeth growing jinx. They show James use levicorpus on him, but don’t show him dropping a brand on Petunia, or reading her letter from Dumbledore. They don’t have him calling Lily a mudblood. Things like that paint a picture of him being a person he isn’t.

Snape hated Harry, and the fact he looked like his father tortured Snape every day since his love and loyalty laid with Lily. You talk about being victimized? Imagine being dangled upside down and having your pants pulled down by a brute with his friends and everyone laughing (that was just what we were allowed to see). Then a dozen years later his doppelgänger shows up and everyone loves him and throws accolades on him for his fame and his historic family. Real people develop character and toughen their skin, even rise above their ‘abusers’ and you can see Snape trying to do that by protecting Harry from Quirrell and from Lupin as a werewolf and many other instances where if he didn’t truly love Lily he could easily have killed Harry. I see Snape as a stoic hero, who’s cleverness and sacrifice outweighed his dickish behavior.

It does not follow that not being innocent takes away from one also being a victim. Child snape was absolutely innocent and he was a victim during his hogwarts years, any siggesion otherwise is staright up denialism. The teaching culture at Hogwarts is generally bad - we see both Hagrid and McGonagall deliberately humiliate students in front of their classmates, and Flitwick calling a student “A baboon brandishing a stick”, and Lupin ordering students to bare their deepest fears to each other in public. Snape is more abrasive and overbearing than the norm but not a lot more, and we’re told that his results are excellent. Umbridge, who was trying to find fault, grudgingly admits that his students are advanced for their age. Snape himself says he expects all the class to pass their OWL and we know this isn’t just bragging, because a very high proportion of his students get an O and qualify to take the NEWT class. Harry believed that snape used the mempry of lily to truly aid him and was appreciative of this fact. I don't think it would matter to Harry why Snape did what he did only that he did it in spite of the geat risk to himself. The movies took liberties all around and also didn't show the aforementioned behavior of other teachers. Snape had self awareness for instance take Lily, he left her well enough alone when she told him to do so. Snape was absolutely nasty to everyone because of the life he led just like other traumatized folks who don't receive help can sometimes turn out unfortunately. His reasons for turning away from Voldemort is just as commendable as those who turned to the Order because of their love for their friends and family and in fact one can respect Snape more because unlike those like the marauders who would naturally join the order to oppose Voldemort because they have an invested interest to protect muggleborns due to having family who are muggleborns Snape had no incentive to defect, if he was the kind of person you characterized him as he'd have washed his hands off the matter and found joy in Lily's fate after their falling out and not dedicate his life to protecting her child and other people as well as putting his life on the line for absolutely no benefit to himself. He is tragic because he could have been so much more and changed he wizarding world positively had anyone believed in him.

Severus is one of the most tragic complex anti heros in the books! How he ever survived Hogwarts at all its a mystery! he treats the children badly because he cant get over he was horrifically tortured at Hogwarts bullied at that at hands of those mauraders! Severus snape was a genius for a wizard but he did make bad mistakes and he eventutally atoned for them by becoming spy and all of dumbledore. He loved lily, its that love in his heart alone that changed his life. Severus Snape is not a monster, Nor Is SLYTHERIN HOUSE! severus snape hates muggles because of his muggle father who abused him, and he hates everything to do with GRYFFINDOR house! ( i understand that.) severus snape is a very complex tragic man who deserved love and happiness that he never got in Wizarding Britian . he would have thrived at any other school except Hogwarts!

I see what you mean, but I feel like this is misses and/or misinterprets key details that make the argument more favorable to Snape. James was not wonderful to Severus, but I can’t say with 100% confidence that Severus was “bullied” by James. This is simply for the fact that the term implies a one-sidedness that isn’t present in the books. Severus was brilliant and powerful, and he took any chance he could to hex James in the corridors of it presented itself. It seems more like a rivalry, similar to Draco and Harry. Severus was a bully from the start. He talks down to and about Petunia, and he even drops a branch on her, making her cry. He genuinely didn’t understand why Lily cared about her sister and kept calling her “just a Muggle”, showing his prejudices at this young age. He’s also snarky with James and Sirius when he first meets them, which isn’t saying he’s a bully because they’re snarky to him too, but I’m just saying he didn’t come in meek and timid and sweet, and got corrupted. Also, he never grows out of it (like James does by the time he’s 16), and in his 20s and 30s, he bullies his students. Ask any parent you know if they’d be okay with a teacher poisoning their child’s pet or making fun of their child’s teeth just because the teacher was once bullied in school by a someone who ended up marrying their crush. It’s just not an excuse. Severus came to school knowing a bunch of dark arts spells, apparently he knew more about the dark arts than anyone else in their first year. Severus didn’t suddenly turn to that. It’s also important to remember that Lily and Severus continued to be best friends up to the end of their 5th year (and she didn’t date James until 7th year) and yet Severus STILL chose to hang out with kids who used dark magic on other students. When Lily calls him out that they all aspired to be Death Eaters, Severus doesn’t deny that and Lily notes that too. He also calls her a mudblood by accident in a moment of embarrassment and rage, but that hardly matters since as Lily stated, he calls every other Muggleborn in school a mudblood anyway. Severus also had a nasty, toxic sort of possessiveness about Lily, telling her that she couldn’t date James, and that he wouldn’t let her. He doesn’t simmer down until Lily insults James and categorically states that she wouldn’t date him anyway. Severus was willing to let Voldemort kill James (which is somewhat understandable) but also willing to let him kill baby Harry, which is just horrid. Even Dumbledore tells Snape he’s disgusted by him for this. Severus NEVER cared about Harry, and he shows this in his memory in Deathly Hallows. First of all Dumbledore expresses surprise that Severus had come to care for Harry (meaning he understood Snape’s motivation had nothing to do with saving this kid), but anyway Severus quickly disabuses him of that by yelling “him?!!”, and producing his patronus. It was “ALWAYS” about Lily. Even him telling Harry to look at him as he died; that was so he could look at Lily’s eyes. Harry has never been his own person to Snape; he’s either seen him as James 2.0, or as Lily Evans’ son. Severus didn’t turn on Tom because it was morally right, or because he saw an error in his ways. He was just upset that Tom didn’t keep his word and murdered Lily when she irritated him. In all of this, his obsession with Lily was all that mattered. Had it been the Longbottoms, best believe Severus would still be a Death Eater. He didn’t balk at Tom killing a baby, he didn’t try to persuade him against it. He only cared that murdering Lily’s baby would put Lily in danger, and he has a crush on Lily, so he wants her to live (never mind how Lily would feel about her husband and son being killed).

Well, of course. But there's also a reason why Snape would behave like a brute which James doesn't have and Sirius has only a little of since he was saved by James' family. That is neglect and potentially abuse from his family at a young age. We leave out those parts of Sirius' behaviors because they become normal ways a child should act when presented with parents such as his. While it would be nice to have a person transcend that pain and simply be a better person and some people may be capable. It is almost cruel to ask that of everyone who goes through the same thing. James being a bully is notable because his parents loved him and he only acted out in fun to impress Sirius.

Thanks @RiseeRee and @@somersault1123 - I think I've stumbled into the right house for me. RavenClaw right here. Might have to borrow the books from the library at this rate! Thanks for ye're knowledge, insight, and thoughts on it. I take your point @RiseeRee about Severus not being the poor victim purely, but at least from what you've shared of it here (and I appreciate tis a HUGE subject, and I'm an ignoramus whom hasn't so much as held the book in me hand. yet), buuuut from what you wrote, (please excuse the clinic-speak, that's my day job!) it appears to me that Severus had a dysregulated nervous system already (perhaps from more than only his parents being dysregulated themselves) . So, yes, had he a more satisfactory/complete redressed upbringing, then he maybe wouldn't be guilty of making poor choices (again and again); as if his soul required that EXTRA suffering (all those who bully others are so far in my experience ALWAYS suffering themselves in another, probably hidden way, shame and confusion being muddled up inside most bullies psyches). His constitution soul-wise just had to go there; to suffer and to cause others continued suffering because it's what he could do. by the end, his lonely, painful life finally finally yielded the relief and light to others that he could only dream of offering in his physical life. The video by @archetypalwisdom is very clear, lucid, and succinct. Thanks lads for the further discussion. 🌌🌠🌚🌙

I love the video one thing though - Snape was already into the dark arts when entering Hogwarts I think his mom made sure he knew how to protect himself (which made his life with Lily harder / made the Marauders hate him more) I do however not think thet him being a bitter teacher is a role. I think Snape would never have choosen to teach - if Dumbledore and Voldemort both had not wanted him in this position. For me he would have been a great potioneer - inventing and perfecting potions. I think working with people (not only teachers, but anyone who works in social jobs) sort of needs a calling/wish to work with people. I think Snape had no other choice then to teach one of the most dangerous subjects of the Hogwarts curriculum. Dumbledore just safed him from Azkaban and ordered him there So I think Snape knew his true potions potential was sort of wasted and that did not make him a better teacher.

I think that something that goes unanswered in the books and movies is how Snape teaches when "not dealing with the usual bunch of dunderheads [he has] to teach." Some teachers are better at teaching beginners and some are better at teaching advanced students. When I was in high school, I had a math teacher who was feared in no small part because of parents, but either he really mellowed in his old age, or he was very different in honors classes, because once we realized we didn't need to be afraid, things went great.

Just one point of contestion: I don't believe Voldemort was ever the most powerful dark wizard of all time. That was most likely Grindelwald. Dumbledore himself alludes as much: "I was not afraid of what he could do to me, magically...he surmised he believed they were evenly-matched, or perhaps, that, he, dumbledore may have been a bit better at dueling. Dumbledore's casual defeat of Grindelwald was likely one of the deepest reason Voldemort feared dumbledore. Not because he set his closet aflame or appeared to be able to see through Voldemort's lies, or be unaffected by his charm... it was that, a few decades prior, Dumbledore had singularly-defeated someone, he, voldemort, likely would have seen as a superior (oir at least-equal) dark wizard. When voldemort FINALLY visits/confronts Grindelwald, Grindelwald is in prison, and wandless. Voldemort had no reason to kill him---except he felt he was or could be a threat. he likely knew by that stage, of rita's book, that the pair had been school-year-friends...and recognized that while they became foes at one point, With Dumbledore gone, the next-greatest wizard who could potentially overthrow him was Grindelwald. Grindelwald was serving a LIFE sentence in nurmengard. But a POTENTIAL release may have been made for him if he, say...promised to defeat voldemort and then surrender again----would ministries have believed that? probably not...but would they have been DESPERATE enough to accept the offer? Probably.

The truth is, Snape was a twisted little freak when he was a kid and grew up to be a person who could barely fit in to society. He was traumatized because he believed in love while living in the absence of it. The shock ended up killing him. An altruistic pov can be psychologically demanding.

It's true he did love Lily, but definitely in a toxic possessive way, probably more after her death than before. This character was an asshole, for the most part. It would be unfair to call him entirely emotionless, but, ehe never really cared about Harry Potter. He never let go of the rivalry that he had with James. In my opinion, at least, he just can't be painted as a figure who was "all good "or entirely "tragic "too many of his own decisions were made willingly and knowingly to make that happen. All that being said, though, these are very realistic ways for a person to behave. It doesn't justify them, but he was just a selfish teenager who never really grew up.

Snape chose to teach a subject poorly on purpose knowing better sense being a student. .he never moved past being a selfish child.even good actions coming from a selfish place .even in his death he could only make the child who he caused the death of take his memory of his lost love. Notice how Harry's mother was never brought up by Snape only his father who's death he caused also. Then repeatedly called him name's to that man's child he killed.. Remer only harry and the father were to be killed..

Snape also put himself between werewolf Lupin and the golden trio!

Oh, I do wish people wouldn't mistake the movies for true canon. He couldn't put himself between anyone because he'd been knocked out by the Trio when the all cast Expelliarmus simultaneously.
