Just a little hint/ The next time you run into paint in the grain wet it first to lift the grain it's easier to sand out that way. See how much better it sanded after you wet it.

I think we can blame that other mid century furniture style - scandi - for the white painted top. Right before we all began truly appreciating MCM for its lovely wood and stylish lines there was a ‘trend’ towards scandi. I feel a lot of people tried to ‘update’ their furniture with a coat of white paint. Just a thought…. So glad you restored it. ❤

This turned out lovely. Try using mineral spirits to check the wood color instead of water. Water will raise the grain.
@midcenturyflipper Жыл бұрын
I’ll try that next time! Great advice 🤜🏻🤛🏻
@statewench2828 Жыл бұрын
Raising the grain is what needed to be done to get to the lower white paint in the grain that is why the second sanding looked so much better. If you just want to see the color then you are correct just Mineral Spirits

I faced the same situation with a walnut veneer top recently. Finally I used a gel stripper and cut the bristles of an old tooth brush to about 1/4 inch and brushed it with the stripper still on and wet. Worked perfectly. Not one white fleck left.

Another way to remove the paint from the wood grain is using paint remover and a brass brush. Worked for me numerous times.
@LadyGecko Жыл бұрын
Trick I saw was after you take the paint off, spray with water to raise the grain to get the paint out of the grain. And if you have a customer that wants to paint or go with the latest trend. Put a clear coat down first.

the white paint in the grain is best removed with acetone and 000 steel wool, takes some patience and good pair of gloves. I would then follow with an oxalic acid treatment to even out the color. This will prevent you from over sanding. Have to be very gentle with veneer.
@midcenturyflipper Жыл бұрын

when you've got paint in the pores like that, chemical stripper is really the way to go. a couple of rounds should loosen the paint and allow you remove it with steel wool and paint thinner
