From my experience I came to realize that you really need three residences. One of them being the place where you personally want to live, where you fit in with the culture, mentality, the environment, weather, etc. Now that may not be the best place to do business and banking. That's why you need an additional "residence" for your business (which in turn may not be in a place you personally want to live in). Last, but not least, none of the two places above may be the best for your international banking, so you may need a third "residence" for your bank account (or several for that matter".

Funny, talking about the medical systems around the world, Canada is always touted as having such amazing, "free" healthcare. My mom just got a letter today, regarding her scheduled CT brain scan and it is scheduled for, wait for it, seriously, wait for it, March 16, 2023! You get what you pay for!

In th U.S. if you can’t afford good insurance yes you’ll get care, but you’ll go bankrupt if you have a health emergency. I’m a U.S. citizen that lives overseas. I’m very familiar with the U.S. healthcare system. It’s a ridiculously broken system. The country I live in has public health care like Canada and a private system. It works far better. Do people with strictly public care sit longer for certain things? Yes. But they don’t go bankrupt paying for care.

US Healthcare has nose-dived in the past decade; nowhere near the best in any aspect. Food? Puh-lease... Culture? We're in a culture war. The 'West' overall is nowhere near what it was for a VERY long time

A question that seems to come up often in these comments is where can I move where I will be treated well? Perhaps the questions should be where can I move and fit in with the culture? It's in the news this week that American expats, and particularly Californians, have caused such a problem in the major cities in Portugal (housing costs have quadrupled) that the Portuguese have been rioting. Wealthy Russian expats moving (and trying to move their bank accounts) into (former Soviet) Georgia are raising tensions there. Refugees moving into Sweden have caused so many problems and public unrest that the Swedish government has declared integration a "failure." I moved from Washington, DC, two years ago and bought property in a small town in Wyoming, in part because of the low taxes in this state. But the main reason I settled here was because I fell in love with the people in my little town. As such, I've made it a point to (1) fit in with the politics and culture that was here (2) NOT socialize only with other recent arrivals like myself, and (3) understand that my presence can impact the economy of this place in both positive and negative ways. For those preparing to move into a foreign culture I would think those considerations would be even more important, especially if their language is not yours. Stop looking solely at what's in it for you and you'll make a better adjustment.

@@AKSmith15 The article didn't say beyond noting how the uber rich are driving up the cost of housing in urban Portugal, but I suspect it's "particularly Californians" because more rich Californians are bailing out of that state. But the other thing, as I alluded to above, is that - rich or poor - expats tend to create their own little enclaves. I see it happen here in my town about an hour out of Jackson (where the word is that the billionaires are driving out the millionaires). People arrive with a sense of entitlement based on their status from wherever they came from (usually exalted job titles and advanced college degrees). They build ridiculously large and expensive houses and virtue-signal about environmentalism, even if what they support puts people out of work. But in this little town (less than 1000 people within the town limits and maybe another 2000 in the surrounding hills) those status things don't matter. Here it's the person who can build things, fix things, or start a business who is king. Considering that some of the problems in Europe also stem from a failure to integrate Third Word refugees, maybe it's just that the desperately poor and the desperately rich don't mix well with average everyday working stiffs trying to feed their kids and put a roof over their heads. If you move abroad, respect those people and try to fit in.

That is not true. There are a lot of Californians , Canadians and northern Europeans moving to Portugal but they buy or rent in the upper market that most Portuguese can not afford. Rents for the Portuguese are going up because the country is receiving a lot of working immigrants , mainly from Brazil , that rent a 2 bedroom flat that used to cost €500 for 1000 because it is shared by 3 families. The leftists and the media keep blaming those who buy or rent expensive houses because the immigrants tend to vote for the left and they want more and more of them but the truth is that Californians are buying and renting houses that most of the Portuguese could not afford with or without Californians and working immigrants. Californians and Americans in general are not even in the top nationalities moving to Portugal. In the last 5 years 5,092 Chinese , 1,084 Brazilians , 501 Turkish , 449 South Africans and 431 Russians applied for the Portuguese Golden Visa and the Portuguese nationality was given to 600 000 working immigrants to allow them to vote but for the media it is the 7557 that bought expensive houses that most Portuguese can not afford that are increasing house prices and not the 600 000 new voters. 600 000 new voters and 700 000 waiting to get the Portuguese nationality to become voters did not and do not increase the house prices , it was the 20 000 USA citizens !

@@wyominghome4857 150 000 to 200 000 Germans are leaving Germany every year but house prices are still going up because Germany is getting much more than 200 000 immigrants and refugees per year. The cheap land and houses are in the countries where the immigrants are coming from and that's what the Germans are doing , they are moving to south America. Californians are leaving but house prices are still going up because the number of new arrivals largely surpasses the departures. Is California really loosing population ? It is not , old voters are leaving and new voters are replacing them and in an higher number , that is what the left is doing , replacing voters. In places like that in Wyoming prices are going up because investors know that somewhere the new voters will have to live , that sooner or later they will arrive and are investing. Population may have not grown much but land house sales did.

One thing that would be interesting is advice on best practice in setting up startup structure, where you don't make millions yet, but the potential upside can be huge.

It's not only about how much you pay in taxes but also about how much work one has to save taxes, how many traps there are to fall into and how much work it causes in general to file your taxes. Further, if you calculate minimum life costs for example in switzerland, mandatory health insurance, food and real estate etc, one should be at least high 7, better 8 figures millionaire so that it's worth it. Last but not least, the colder and more rainy climate asks for second domiciles in warmer places while directly living in such a please leaves the options where to spend time while not at home more open. After all, someone without income is very well off in Madrid and newly Andalucia (waivered wealth tax) or even Germany as well, while Spain and Germany are way better value for money than Switzerland. How I know is easy, I'm Swiss, living in Madrid with a house in Andalucia and before that have livied all over the world over 40 years.

Could you create a video on the topic of how to access the global investment markets from different countries if you are an e-commerce entrepreneur already settle in a low-tax domicile - let's say before for a US/Western europe customer it was easy to open up an investment account with Robinhood or equivalent, but how does it work when you go to Dubai / malaysia / Georgia. Not speaking about real estate or venture capital but the more standard Stocks / Reits etc. In bulgaria for example such public investment options are abysmally bad, one would be better off to spend 1 month doing the KYC for a western european bank and exchange to trade/ invest in index funds. That's all with the background that an investment portfolio will have a large passive simple base such as a global public index fund.

Batumi is more touristy (nightlife, exapts, varied food) and more expensive than Yerevan. Arguably more overrated too. Yerevan is a hidden interesting gem. The taxes are slightly higher, but the tech scene is more ambitious. Real estate is easier to buy in Yerevan and there are more interesting deals. The banking in Georgia is far better though, especially for nomad capitalists. Armenia also has the advantage of being linked to both the Russian and the banking system. If you want to have business in the "forbidden" markets of Russia, and Iran, you can't find a better base than Yerevan.

Also, the financial channels and system are too closed and too conservative in NZ. There’s need a big change management in financial system in NZ. The things I don't like about it are the matesmanship (which means people are appointed to all the senior positions based on who they know, not what they know, so the place is run by incompetent and mediocre people). The left wing politics (all the political parties are left of centre). The tall poppy syndrome (they generally don't like people with exceptional talent or ability, and try to cut them down to size). If you have exceptional skills or talent (other than in the sporting arena) it's very difficult to get ahead there, which is why all their best people leave. There's a lot of hidden corruption (particularly in real estate, where most of the newer build houses are basically made of cardboard, and fall down after a few years). Also a surprisingly high level of violent crime, which doesn't get talked about much, because it's nearly all committed by Maoris and Islanders.

I think the big issue with moving overseas is lifestyle change. Now you lose a few consumer conveniences and life is lived differently but in general you can get used to those things and the different ways in which people live in other parts of the world. I have been traveling for awhile now, not as extensively as many but I have been to a fair amount of places. My biggest gripe is this. Americans are foodies. I might want mexican one day, then sushi the next, then thai the day after that, then ethopian, then greek, then french, then maybe some bbq, then some southern, then the next day I am feeling korean bbq, etc... In the US major cities, even some of the less known ones, you will have fantastic options for all of this. This is not the case in even most of the rest of the developed world. Now there are exceptions. London, Berlin, Seoul, Mexico City, Tokyo, KL all have fantastic options for everything I mentioned, though I could not find good mexican outside the US or Mexico with the exception of Tokyo. For instance if you move to Athens they have great Greek and Middle Eastern food and that is it. If you go to Thailand they have great Thai and Asian food and that's it. If you move to Belgrade they have good Balkan food and that is it. If you move to South America they have good local cuisine and that's it. This is a huge deal breaker for me and I think a lot of Americans who want the world of food available at all times. So for me I have to move to one of those major cities because giving up the world of food is a non starter for me.

@0:30 S Walker doesn't know anyone that has paid a 50% tax bill in the US outside of New York and California. Ok, S. Walker, so you don't know anyone that pays it so it must not exist, right? If you are self=employed, S Walker, you pay both sides of SS and Medicare, so 15.3% right there. Maybe you are in Oregon but even in that lower tax state you hit the highest tax bracket with a pretty low income for each. If you are a high earner you pretty much are paying up to 9.9%. State income taxes and fica / medicare for Oregon at $250K income would be taking $36,300 from you, or 14.5% of your blood, sweat and tears. Throw in federal income tax and in Oregon you are now up another $57,650 for a total of nearly 38% of your blood, sweat, and tears taken from you before you even get to benefit from it and spend some on yourself. If you are self employed that jumps to nearly 43%. I guess hope that you are not self-employed, right? Oh, of course, don't forget that if you are self employ about the taxes that your business is also going to be paying outside of matching your payroll tax. Throw on property taxes, sales taxes (most states), city taxes (some cities), county level sales taxes (some counties in some states add on to state sales taxes) and even at a modest $250,000 income someone could be on top of 50% in basic taxes or 43% if you just want to split hairs and only count income taxes. But I guess if you work for someone else you would only be paying almost 38% in Oregon. So much better, right? Don't have an AGI over $250,000 or you will be hit with another 3.8% high earner surtax on any and all investment income that you receive.

If you're American, you can get 3 month tourist visas in most countries. You do have further restrictions, however, in Europe. You'd still have to file a tax return, but you can get over 6 figures tax free if you live outside the USA most of the year.

A thought occurred to me while watching your video. I wonder if you have given any thought to where retired business people could go to where they are treated best. Taxes on money earned might not be a high priority at this point of retirement. How to get the after taxes money out of extortion countries like Canada? BTW: I would never recommend entrepreneurial people to start companies in Canada. Many retired folks would like to leave and take their Canadian pensions with them. Any countries where Canadian retirement community can take their pension?

I have an idea, you could make some community, a subreddit or something, where people can discuss what countries to move to. Basically a place where you can ask questions along the line "I want to live in a warm country near the coast with low capital gains taxes" etc and the community discusses. Also as a place to share maps, articles, discussions etc.

Australia is just a shitshow of insanity right now, but keep in mind that although brazil is not that bad In terms of wokeness YET, we are heavily influenced by US culture, we just lack behind a little bit, about 5 years or so... Give it time and you'll see. It's also important to say that "wokeness" here is more prevalent in the high income part of the population, and also among young people of all income brackets who are university students, since universities are a nest for those ideologies. You're more likely to scape wokeness by hanging out with people who are poorer, which you're not likely to do since being australian automatic means you're probably in the 1% here in brazil. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of rational high income people and univesities students aswell, but the "wokeness" thing is growing here.. give it some time and it's only going to get worse. Take that aside and we are a reeealy bad country to live in.. there is an extreme amount of poverty, a lot of violence (you generally can't walk on the streets and feel safe, especially in major cities... put it like this, if you ask people of age 18 if they were ever mugged or worse you rarely going to get a no as a response, if you ask people in their 30s thats almost imposssible so be prepared), our infrastructure sucks, so unless you live in a walled neighborhood there generally is no actual "good neighborhood", not compared to australia anyways. The roads are very unsafe so if you're traveling around you should be ok with the fact that the mortality rates are way higher, also the streets on the cities are generally not that well kept. On top of that we are in a political mess right now and is not going to get better anytime soon, in the best case scenario I would say it can start getting better in like 10 years or so.. we are also living an economic crises, although being australian and therefore rich for our standards shelters you from that, but you're going to have to see the ramifications of that every day of your life while you stay here... We are also a really rich county when it comes to diversity of culture so that's really nice, we are also pretty welcoming people 😊. I just think is kind of a step down australia in terms of living standards, like a BIG ASS step down haha

Hey Andrew and the Nomad Capitalist team, I have a question: I’ve recently heard that a US citizen can go back and forth to become a US national at any time. Apparently they are no longer obligated to pay taxes if they live outside the US, foreign banks don’t have to report them, and all they give up is voting rights (whoop-de-doo). Is this true? This seems better than just renouncing citizenship, or at least it’s a stepping stone before you do. Could you make a video on this topic? The risk/rewards and what you see for this in the future? The only people who are legally "US nationals" without also being US citizens are those born in American Samoa, and in what are now unincorporated territories of the USA (Guam, Puerto Rico, etc.) before about 1950, who have never become naturalised US citizens. Every other "US national" is also a US citizen, and therefore subject to US tax law, regardless of their residency.
