One of my favorites lines in the series was: "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.". Obviously Lewis did indeed take his names thoughtfully and seriously.

I think it would be awesome if C.S. Lewis actually named Caspian because of the Caspian sea, because Caspian loves sea so much and it would make sence since he resumed seafaring in Narnia. Great video as always by the way :D

My favorite is still Emeth, which is derived from the word Amet, and where we get the name Emmitt, as in Emmitt Smith, the all time leading running back in the NFL. Now Amet, which means truth (and also the root of the word Amen), is made up of three letters in Hebrew: Alef, Mem and Tav. What's cool about those is that they are the first, middle and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet. So the truth is the whole story, from beginning to end. Also all three letters sit flat on the page, the truth is firmly rooted and steady, it doesn't shift. Now there's something very funny with the word Amet, if you take out the alef, it becomes the word met, which means dead, which is also interesting because met is very similar to the word mort, which is the Latin root for the word death and where we get such words as mortality. Now that's interesting because in Hebrew alef is always associated with G-d, so what happens is if you take G-d out of the story, there is no truth, only death.

Oh, I just love this... Isn't God's Word simply amazing? We can never come to the end of searching for His hidden truths (the "sod" level of Biblical study) encoded in the very letters of His inspired Word! The very shapes and meanings of the letters are full of deep insight, not to mention their numerical values and what they tell us. Praise be to God the King of the Universe, who has given us the precious gift of His unmatched, inspired Word!!!

Plus, I think Shasta is a reference to Castor from Greek mythology. Why? Because Pollux and Castor in Greek mythology were twins, with Pollux being a boxer and Castor being a great horseman. Similarly, Corin became a boxer, and Shasta (later Cor) became a horseman.

Well it makes sense because Lewis was a literary man just as Tolkien was. It's interesting going back and rereading The Magician's Nephew because Lewis draws liberally from Tolkien's Ainulindale, Valaquenta and the early chapters of Quenta Silmarillion when working on his own creation story. Part of why no one realized it was because Lewis is a capable enough writer to rework some things to make them distinct from what Tolkien wrote, but the other part is the Magician's Nephew appeared years before the Silmarillion was published, and people didn't have much of an idea of Tolkiens stories of the Elder Days of Middle Earth.

Also, don’t forget the significance of the name Pevensie: they’re named for Pevensey, the village in East Sussex where William the Conqueror landed in 1066. Just like William, the Pevensies entered a new land and claimed the throne, changing the course of history of the land and the world forever. A couple of notes about pronunciation: according to Douglas Gresham, Jadis is pronounced “JAH-dis”, Calormen/Calormene is “cuh-LOR-men” (derived from the Spanish word calor, because it’s a hot country), and the first syllable of Emeth is pronounced like the letter M.

Fairly certain kirk also means church. Especially considering he was known as professor kirk in the first book published. This being similar to mother kirk in pilgrims regress. Lewis likes to reference the church when he has old wise characters.
@IntotheWardrobe
@IntotheWardrobe 9 ай бұрын
Yes, and it seems to me that the church reference was a much stronger connection in Pilgrims Regress. I can't see why "church" would reflect any particular meaning to Digory's character. Of course, Lewis didn't have MN in mind when he wrote LWW, so the name meaning may be a bit of a retcon. However, it also may have helped serve as inspiration for the use of rings as a plot device as well.

@IntotheWardrobe It reminds me of lewis's word play in paralandra With Ransom and meleldil saying "I was also called Ransom." A fortuitous bit of providence that had meaning beyond what the name originally meant to imply.

So lovely to have found your channel. Thank you so much for this great video which has taught me a great deal that I was not aware of. I have loved Narnia since I was 9 years old, and I am now 70. My name means Lily too - the Hebrew word (and name) is Shoshannah. It also implies beauty because Jesus said in Luke 12:27: "Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." This verse has been very precious to me for many years. My name is also a reminder not to strive and worry, but to rest in Jesus who supplies all my needs and gives me peace. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:6-7). I have long been fascinated by the meanings of names, particularly in the Bible. Did you know that the names of the pre-Flood patriarchs from Adam to Noah (the names are transliterated in our English Bibles but not translated) spells the Gospel message? Adam = man Seth = appointed Enosh - mortal Cainan = sorrow Mahalalel = the blessed God Jared = shall come down Enoch = teaching Methuselah = his death shall bring Lamech = despairing Noah = comfort, rest "Man is appointed mortal sorrow, but the blessed God shall come down, teaching that His death shall bring the despairing comfort and rest." This would not work if the names were in any other order. God has encoded many other amazing truths and secrets in His inerrant, inspired Word. Jesus (Yeshua) means "The Lord saves." This makes sense of the words spoken by the angel Gabriel to Joseph when he was worried about taking Mary as his wife when he discovered she was pregnant: "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matt. 1:21). It is well worth the effort to study the meanings of the Hebrew names in the Bible which give us so many more insights.

I knew about Aslan, Tash and Tarkaan being Turkish. Have been trying to confirm Jadis, but Google Translate doesn't seem to agree. Kirke (as in Digory) also means "church" (CSL also has a "Mother Kirke" in the Pilgrim's Regress). Pevensey is a place in the UK famous for being where the Norman conquerors landed. As for Eustace Clarence Scrubb: "Good standing", "clarity" and "cleansing" - a reference to his encounter with Aslan, perhaps?

My parents even I grow up treat me as I was unwelcome thing who they had to kept and now I became their prisoner forever. But I always love name Lucy and when I discovered the world of Narnia and Lucy Pevensie I fall in love with her immediately ! Thanks to her character I love the name Lucy even more,investigated more of Saints Lucia(they actually really young and brave women) and choose it(finally ) as my second (unfortunately ,why not first!!!) name on my Confirmation Sacrament. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the name "Pevensie". The name's actual meaning is a minor point compared to the place which they get their name. Pevensey is the place where William the Conqueror landed during the Norman Invasion, which would forever change England, and link the histories of England and France irreparably. I can't be sure what the full symbolism was, but there you go.

Yes, I actually discuss this in my video on the hidden timeline of Narnia. I do think it's relevant as signifying the arrival of new "conquerors", i.e. the Pevensies as the kings and queens of Narnia. TBH I just ran out of time to include many other significant names!

Much like Lewis, JK Rowling carefully crafted the names of her characters…..brilliantly done.

Thanks for the note! Rowling has said that Narnia was one of her inspirations. I actually wondered if there was a connection between Digory Kirke and Cedric Digory but was unable to find any substantive evidence.

@@IntotheWardrobe. I’ve often thought Rowling was inspired by both Tolkien and Lewis. Once you get to the end of the final book, the Christian allegory is obvious in the HP series. We should have realized from the beginning….as the students departed from King’s Cross. She could have chosen any other London trail station, but she chose that. And then…there is Harry’s sacrifice for the wizard world, AND resurrection. Once his sacrifice was done, Voldy couldn’t truly harm the rest of the his friends. As for Diggory, I never saw any connection other than the name. Cedric was a good and loyal and trustworthy person, but had no connection to Digory Kirk.

This is interesting. I knew about Aslan meaning "lion" in Turkish and Tash meaning "Stone" in Turkish. I kind of knew about Shift being a shifty character and Puzzle being perplexed and puzzled. I didn't know about "Miraz" meaning "Inheritance". It actually makes sense, given his motivation of wanting to have the throne for himself (he actually reminds me of Scar from The Lion King). I knew about "Rishda" meaning charmer, but never realized there was deeper meaning. He unintentionally called on Tash (doesn't believe in him). I knew about Emeth (who is my favorite character in the series) meaning "faithful and true" in Hebrew. What a contrast between the two Calormenes: one who doesn't believe in Tash and another who is a devoted follower!

The backdrop of the Pevensey Children was World War II and the Nazi. The four children represented the politics of the time that were at odds until united. lucy was Churchill who first revealed about what she has seen yet doubts by Nevell Chamberlain which Susan used logic and reluctant no to react, Peter was the American position to not to get involved with Europe, Edmond was an oddity of the times when some royals had actually lured into the fascination of early Nazi why Edmond was easily snared into the facade of Jadis but took all sides to unite against an evil and war once recognized. Yet God made many things possible in Lewis' Children stories.

Yep, they both derive from the same latin root word for light. The difference is Lucifer did not live up to his title, becoming a harbinger of darkness instead of light.

@@IntotheWardrobe Lucifer was the "light-bearer" rather than the generator of light. His light was reflected only. The true light is Christ (John 1:6-9): "There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world." Satan also appears as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:13-14): "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light." Satan is the great deceiver, the liar from the beginning.

How ironic, the meaning of taş, “stone, rock” in Turkish overlaps with the meaning of pétros, “stone, rock” in Greek. So, the "meanings" of the names Tash and Peter are conveniently retrofitted to match the character.
