Ignoring all of the more recent Jack Sparrow additions, I've always assumed that the curse was specifically that they were frozen in their current activity forever, unable to move. The curse didn't kill them, directly, but being unable to move, they eventually starved to death and turned to skeletons, still bound together by the curse. This would explain why, for example, a pirate appears to have died while holding a bottle upright and drinking from it, and would even explain why the bottle continues to pour rum - it, too, was cursed and is frozen in its current activity (draining) forever. Anyway, that's the best I could come up with from the available pieces of information.
@thewantingmoon36562 жыл бұрын
the curse is them being stuck in the sea of the damned, bound by their lust for treasure reliving their memories for all eternity
@jimcampbell2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know that (before the movies) the “curse” was literal. It just means it’s bad. As in the pirates commuted evil to get it. “You know where it be hidden, proceed at your own risk”.. in other words if you get caught up in doing what these pirates did you may not live to return to where this treasure is. Pirates end up dead because of their own evil, their own drunkenness etc. treasure means nothing to a dead man. So don’t be like them.

There’s just something so intriguing about the cave scene. I like to think of it as the harsh reality of being a pirate, as most pirates will end up dead with either nothing or a treasure they can’t even use. While the rest of the ride is the “fantasy” that we like to imagine pirates were really like, the cave scene is about people throwing they’re lives away for greed. It’s so spooky and almost saddening, which is why I think it’s the highlight of the ride for me personally.

I gotta say, the cave scene has always been my favorite part since I was very little and visiting Disneyland through my childhood, the smell of the water, the cool air, the calming almost haunting music, and the slow relaxing journey through a room of skeletons really felt fun for my macabre loving little brain. Of course, all back when Disneyland wasn’t as expensive, currently 20 years old and that location even recently when I went gave me waves of nostalgia, even if the new Star Wars land is my absolute favorite land, Pirates and Haunted Mansion will always be nostalgic and relaxing rides that captured my imagination
@kaytlinjustis56432 жыл бұрын
Same! I also liked the bats in the caves (the little green eyes that MAY have actually been rats), and would force my parents to go on the same ride at least three times for that reason! Big fan of Peter Pan mostly due to the pirates and such! Such fun times... still incredibly expensive though, which is why it felt so different when we got to go again!

In the video when Walt asks the woman if she believes in Pirates it is a continuation of another conversation earlier in the video. Before showing her models of Pirates, he had shown her early models of the Haunted Mansion. He had asked her if she believed in ghosts, and she said no. So it was a joke. Sorry to be all, "Well, actually" about this, but I just wanted you know. Plus, the video had a lot of Haunted Mansion content before, which I think you might like.

Sea of Thieves also added a lot of lore to the pirates of the caribbean ride through the pirates life tall tales, where the fort is part of jacks memory in the sea of the damned which is how these dead pirates also come back to life, i would definitely dive into that side too as the story has been said to be canonical by disney itself, and considering a major story chapter is the events of the ride, that really supports it further too
@TheGreatBooster2 жыл бұрын
The caves are easily my favorite part of the ride. The atmosphere, the visual storytelling, the sheer amount of detail and the music all come together to create this realm of adventure and mystery. It helps give this pirate attraction a bit of a ghost story angle, especially with the travel through time your boat takes not once, but twice. The caves also serve the purpose of being a narrative linchpin: prior to the movie additions kinda throwing a lot of the narrative cohesion into question (and I could go on about how so many of those changes don't make sense with the beats, but I digress), what you're seeing is the ultimate fate of the pirates we will later see ransacking the town, and what that ill-gotten loot did to them. I still remember a time when they had pirates in the arsenal scene trying to haul a bag of treasure up the lift hill, and then seeing skeletons along the sides of the lift while "Dead men tell no tales" echoed around again; it's a reminder, a bookend, a callback to those caves. Made a lot more sense then having Jack get the treasure first...
@officialmonarchmusic11 ай бұрын
I agree. The movie changes really contradict the whole thesis of the ride. Meaningless death with meaningless treasure is the ultimate end of piracy... unless you're Jack Sparrow and then you're all good. Get as much treasure as you like!

Roman numerals are actually pretty easy. Even if you don’t know all of the symbols off the top of your head (I always forget the symbol for 500), you can usually figure out what number it’s supposed to be if you remember a few basic rules. 1. The Symbols I = 1 V = 5 X = 10 L = 50 C = 100 D = 500 M = 1000 2. Symbols never repeat more than three times in a row. For example, rather than being IIII, the way you’d write the number four is actually IV. Why? Because of the next rule. 3. For digits that are one unit below the next five or round, use subtraction, and stick the number you’re subtracting in front of the number you’re subtracting it from. When you see IV, think “5-1”, which gives you four. In terms of years, this is done for decades, centuries, millennia, and their halfway points. The year 1900 would be MCM. The leading M gives you 1000, and then CM is 900. 1944 would be MCMXLIV. Take a look at the tablet on the Statue of Liberty, which reads “July IV MDCCLXXVI”, or July 4th, 1776. This year is easy: MMXXII. What about the year that brought up this conversation, MDCXLIII? M = 1000 D = 500 C = 100 XL = 40 (remember, it’d be 50-10) III = 3 Add them up from left to right, and you’ve got 1643.

I love the way Walt said "And Things" When he said THAT, you KNEW there was gonna be some GREAT THINGS! Walt knew HOW to tell a story, what made it "drag" and where to put the "business" in. If something didn't "advance" the story, it was taken out. I rode DL Pirates when I was 6 yrs. old. It actually opened the year I was born. Yo Ho was what I remembered. But, the whole THING is immersive. Every time you ride it you see something new. The swirling clouds up above near the auction scene. The smell of the smoldering timbers. Yes! Claude IS da MAN! I do get it..... You're doing a good job. Watched Walt forever on Sunday night talking about Disneyland and Pirates and going there and actually seeing it is magic.....always has and always will be. Love eating at the Blue Bayou and then going on the ride...the smell of the water, one is finally there. Walt let us experience the ride as if we were a character in the movie. He was authentic and it strikes me that you are able to capture that. Remember riding People Mover and seeing all of the rides in Tomorrowland all moving at the same time--it was so beautiful and fun and unbelievable. Walt controlled the magic and the story--or what do you think? Asking my age old question. Who was Walt Disney, what is his genius and what is Disneyland, more than just an amusement park?

First to answer your question, my favorite part of Pirates of the Caribbean is two fold. First the decent into yesteryear down the waterfall. A drop fright is always a roller coaster delight. Especially when done in the dark with water splashing. But an even better effect is when Uncle Walt sends you into the pirate world by "going down the waterfall only Walt Disney could return you to today by going UP the waterfall." On a parallel universe you should attempt an OFFHAND DISNEY episode telling YOUR version of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN tale. By re-editing the five PotC rides from "D"land, WDW, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo, and Shanghai you should discover the true treasure and offhanded secrets of Jack Sparrow vs. Capt. John LeFeete.

As far as the “story”, the ride may not exactly have an exact story but there is clearly a timeline. You start in the future when the pirates are dead. Then you go back in time, the pirates arrive in their ship at the port. They kidnap the mayor and steal stuff. They auction off stuff. In the original ride they auction the women, but the women escape and they are chasing them. They proceed to get more drunk. Some end up in jail with the building threatening to burn around them. The last couple in the armory are so drunk they are shooting each other with explosives all around. (In the Disneyland tv special there was actually an explosion!) in other words. Pirating does not end well..

I think the movie is cannon within the ride. The ride came first with the established settings then as the movies happened they used said settings just focussing in one one particular pirate or group of pirates instead of the multiple groups within the ride. In the first movie there is the scene when they first arrive at tortuga, that scene has exact copies of scenes from the village before it burns down. Even though they have different names maybe the locals call it puerto durado but outsiders may refer to it as tortuga.

I think that, in the case of the Disneyland version of POTC, the first waterfall is transporting you to the cave, but not back in time. You only go back in time once you pass the cool skeleton to person illusion, and the pirates you are seeing raid the town are the same ones that are now skeletons in the cave. This would explain not only why that one skeleton appears to come alive again, but also why we hear "Dead men tell no tales,": they tell no tales, so we have to go back in time for them to tell it. In Disneyworld, it's pretty much the same, but because we are already in Puerto Dorado, we don't need the magic waterfall. You might be asking, "But aren't we already back in time?" Yes, we are, but we are back in time a bit later than the events in POTC (maybe 25-50 years), so we still need to go back in time to let them tell their tale.

I hate to break it to you, but the best pirates ride in the world (and imo the best dark ride period) is clearly the one in Disneyland Paris. There are many reasons for this but the most obvious is the best moment, this ride (or any other) has to offer: Imagine the first big drop in the ride - but here you‘re going directly into the big battle scene. Your heart still pounding from the fall, while the cannons are roaring all around you and the majestic music is playing … There‘s nothing quite like it in the whole wide world!
