I bet there's a bunch of Marines who absolutely hated M81 during Desert Storm and in 2003 because so many of them were stuck wearing MOPP suits (which already weren't fun to wear) in woodland, but today there's been enough time to remember more of the pattern's history and for nostalgia to take root. Kids in my generation see the Drifire and Crye uniforms in IR treated woodland as this extremely prestigious status symbol associated with the Marine Raiders and MARSOC.

Alice is my favorite field lady. Like you, she supported me so often that I still support her versatility in the field. I appreciate this model of a lighter weight Alice pack but the medium I have doesn't need replacement. I wore out a canvas commercial version (Korean) of a small ALICE pack years ago. It had shoulder straps attached and no frame. Great for short trips. I could carry a gallon of water, a meal, maps and some gear. If I were a younger guy without my pack, I might be tempted to purchase this new one one. The panel is great. It would be nice if two could be combined. Thanks for the video. Semper Fi.

If this has been mentioned, I apologize in advance, but the orange lining in the pack helps with visibility inside the pack, so you can quickly find items. The normal pack, if it is made of the material inside that's outside, is dark inside the pack and can make identifying and finding items difficult. The orange lining goes a long way towards solving that problem. HW has been doing this for quite a while, and it's genius, especially given that you can use the inside of the pack as a signaling device. I remember having an ALICE pack like this in BT, and hating carrying the damned thing, but I was 18 and bulletproof, so I did it. Young, dumb and full of......well, you know. Great review, good sir. Very thorough. I look forward to your future review after using it for awhile (if you're going to do so; if not, it would be a pity). I'm Army, but Semper Fi, young man. Sweet ALICE repro. Pity tHW inexplicably discontinued it. Modern ALICE should have PALS on the lid, down the sides and above the pouches. I modded a medium issue ALICE like that and it rocks, combining the practicality of ALICE with the modularity of MOLLE to organise the smaller items that you don't want to be digging around for. Hydration pouches on the sides and a "claymore" pouch or admin pouch on the lid works well and free up cargo space in the pack. Storm baffle too.

@@Brent0331 Sounds like you had the gen 1 series? I know guys that swear by the ALICE stuff and others with the MOLLE gear, and each have their own quirks. I've had a gen 1 large ruck in woodland and the frame was garbage, a simple swap out of the frame with a new gen 4 frame and I'm good to go. Personally I prefer the MOLLE as it's more adaptable than the ALICE gear I own.

Looks like a great pack, but maybe a bit expensive for what it is (especially considering how cheap surplus ALICE packs are). Especially the daypack is a bit much considering that for the price, they are competing with the likes of maxpedition and mystery ranch (2DAP).
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 3 жыл бұрын
Not disagreeing that the price is up there, which is typical of quality American made gear. But to your point, I do want to point out that ALICE packs are no longer cheap. Those days are long gone. Yes, someone still might get lucky here and there when looking for them. But generally speaking if you look at a surplus stores online or on Ebay, the prices on them have gone through the roof compared to what they use to be in the 90s, early 2000s.

It takes no weight to make a pouch with a pass thru and a little webbing is at most an ounce or two. Just a few ounces at most.

So if you go to the site and stack up that pack in your cart you're going to have around 400 dollars in it. For an ALICE pack. 400 dollars. Also, it's missing stuff compared to the original. How much are those fastex buckles worth to you? They're worth about 8 dollars and some light sewing to me, personally, and I don't like them enough over the extant hardware to invest that unless they're already shot on a well used bag. Even then I've taken to using G hooks instead of fastex.

That's just absurd. $400 for a damned ALICE pack?!

If you can make them cheaper, get to it. Light sewing..... LOL!!!!! Funniest thing I've read all day. $400 for that pack, the shoulder straps, and the kidney pad, is about spot on, for a hand made American product.

I just bought a Kifaru for less than 300 from the factory. It's got about 50x the sewing involved, better made, and better materials. Light sewing. Yes. That's what I said. If you think attaching fastex buckles to straps is some sort of chore, no wonder you think this is a 400 dollar pack. There is more sewing in the molle and zippers on the XRay I just got than on that ENTIRE pack, and it was cheaper. Also didnt need 250 dollars worth of accoutrements to hang it off your back, either. Right out of the box to under a load and on my back. This ruck is way too expensive.

@UW Gear these packs arent hand sewn, either. No packs are. Dude at hidden woodsmen has a sewing machine. Probably several. So just drop that "bUhT iT's HaYuNdMaYdE" tripe. Nobody with a brain thinks they are.

Hidden woodsman just doesn't feel or look innovative. I go with all hill people gear USA made and amazing and far better in all it can do. I used to be interested in hidden woodsman. But its all copy gear USA made or not. And kinda boring and not much to it.
