Not really, my cousin is a world-renowned bodybuilder and yes they use roids but this diet is truly the diet for these types of body types.

I had a professor who told me he got an eating disorder during his time in wrestling because of the strict weight requirements. It's pretty common for wrestling to be the impetus for eating disorders in boys.

As someone who reached the top of the professional bodybuilding world, I can see our unhealthy extremism of our type of dieting is running rampant here. Eating disorders among young men doesn't surprise me one bit. That with the urge to have to use steroids to keep up is truly sad.

Exactly, being masculine is good but pursuing an unrealistic masculine ideal at the expense of your own health is not. Women often have eating disorders for similar reasons (pursuing an unrealistic feminine ideal). Eating disorders and other mental health issues are underreported in men precisely because we have trouble spotting unhealthy masculine expression and because men are not encouraged to seek out help.

To me, that's what "toxic masculinity" can mean: Shoving down feelings ("boys don't cry"; taking drugs/drinking; ridiculing females), only portraying a strong front (even before your partner); it's the thing that says asking for help when it's needed is a weakness, that human frailty must be hidden at all costs. It's a societal thing that eats males alive from the *inside,* and it is self-imposed, unnecessary, and helpful to no one.

No, but obsessing on it is. It's easy to miss that, since the more you obsess, the bigger you get, the more admiration you get, and it becomes a viscous cycle. Just because you look buff, just because you can call your diet "healthy", doesn't mean you don't have an issue. How much of your time is taken up by obsessing on your diet, feeling guilty for skipping a day at the gym, etc? Your physical health may be top notch, that doesn't mean your mental health is doing well. (The "you" there is generic, it's not directed at you specifically).

@@wfcoaker1398 I can tell you anecdotally my mental and physical health is 10x better since i started eating right and lifting, truly a night and day difference. You have to approach it with a realistic mindset and as a beginner it can be difficult to find actual quality information. The real problem is unrealistic expectations and trying to reach goals by taking shortcuts instead of long term consistency. It also doesn't help that so many "influencers" are frauds and get their physique through drug abuse.

@@wfcoaker1398 i feel better because i have more energy, less stress, better libido, better mental clarity. I pay attention to nutrition and i maintain a healthy bodyfat percentage around 15 to 18%. I pursue strength and athleticism over aesthetics. One thing i will say is theres many different mindsets of gym goers and the one most responsible for unhealthy ideas is bodybuilding. Professional bodybuilding necessitates heavy drug abuse and unhealthy bodyfat percentages as well as carrying too much mass that can cause heart problems. Not too say all Bodybuilders are bad or unhealthy, but many are.

Listen to your body guys and gals and encourage different things to eat and always work out (especially with weights, less running)! Maybe it's just a “time” thing or a “gene” thing as well. But listen to your body and hold yourself accountable to the type of discipline it takes to be lean&bulking up. I let myself go when my ex had our child, since 2020 I've been working on my mental, have a great relationship with my partner and working on my body. It's giving more energy and now I apply the struggle as a strength to becoming men! I hope this makes sense since English is my second language! Everyone keep your health and build your wealth for you and your family!

These comments are ignorant for the most part and I agree with the person who makes mention of how little time is spent on boys wanting to be thin versus muscular. There's nothing wrong with eating healthy and working out but you don't get where these boys were at by doing those things. It's about seeing oneself in the mirror as one actually is and making health choices based on reality not distortion.

I'll always have the image in my mind of being Tiny, Skinny and petite. I've tried every diet under the sun. I even done OMAD. I'm 6'0 280lbs. I have natural muscles which I cannot stand. I hate being tall and fat and I wish I was 5'7 and only weighed 100lbs. I want to be little. Delicate. Petite. Frail. I hate being broad. Hate having muscles and hate being bulky.

As a nurse and a person whose always been thin naturally I am seeing similar concerning traits in my 13 y/o son. His waist size is unchanged in nearly 2 years, it’s subtle but after a while it’s obsessive calorie restriction.

@Kit E. Krappenshitz yes he’s been in counseling (albeit difficult to find in my rural community with adolescent experience) prior to developing this behavior. I’ve shared it with the counselor as he doesn’t always tell her these things.

If you're trying to gain weight, there are 500-cal Boost shakes online you can buy. Those really helped me, although they're kind of expensive. (Seriously. I was very underweight, and it was the one thing that got me back near normal.)

@@erinthesystem9608 my twin grandsons went through about a 9" growth spurt the summer between 6th grade intermediate school and 7th grade middle school & that was 5-6 years ago and they are 6' and 110 & just turned 18. Their ignorant doctors wouldn't listen when I repeatedly said they need about 50-60 lbs. While still 17 and seniors in high school I finally got a Gastro who has at least tried to help them gain weight by prescribing them 2 high caloric shakes a day. They've barely gained anything but are getting their daily nutrients. All my kids were healthy weights and I don't understand why it took so long for a doctor to get it given they look like Holocaust victims with their shirts off. They are prone to accidents and injury and I'd rather they didn't get their driver's licenses because I think they'd be seriously injured or killed if they got in to a wreck. Even normal exercise & sports games with peers of the same height and age but of normal weight can be very dangerous. If this sounds like your experience I think you need to get a doctor's appointment to find out if you have any underlying explanation for your weight. My grandsons doc also said to eat 3 high caloric meals and 2 healthy snacks between them like fruits and I've heard if you do fast short reps with light weights, I agree with you @Erin and believe anyone would gain some healthy weight if you are consistent with your nutrition and physical activity @WayPine

I'm sorry to correct the very bad misinformation in this video, but in 2022 the DSM-5-TR came out, and in 2012 the DSM-5 came out, and in 2000 the DSM-4-TR came out... The DSM-4-TR required only post-menarchal females to have to have missed their periods to be diagnosed as anorexic... that was the year 2000... The DSM-5 completely removed this issue completely...

I wish this program were longer! It is refreshing to hear young men in recovery, finding strength again, and not having the same conversation about a "boy crisis" devolve into a forum for hating women. (Too often, "uplifting" young men seems to depend on putting women down.) I was often asked if Barbie had anything to do w/my anorexia- she didn't, but Betty and Veronica did (particularly their 45° jawlines)- but I never even noticed the difference in boys' toys over the years! I was diagnosed; my brother, meanwhile, still hasn't been diagnosed. There was a real difference, I think, for our parents: things which didn't fit their ideas of who we were just weren't heard or seen, or somehow didn't register with them. Anyway, this topic can always use more exploration. So thank you!

I think that is simply eating (or adjusting your lifestyle) for a goal. What's being presented in the video is these guys setting unrealistic goals, so eating to achieve them seems like a disorder.

@@herunr4027 There's definitely a psychological aspect. The goals start out simply and innocently enough, but then they shift, along with your own perception of yourself. The eating disorder develops with setting rules for yourself, then kicking yourself for ever breaking those "rules." It almost develops its own rigid, harsh-taskmaster personality of its own. But an eating disorder is a very effective distraction- and an odd sort of comfort- when other problems have become intractable. It feels powerful to have mastery over oneself, to be "disciplined"- but, slowly, it comes to rule over your mind, body, and life. Eventually, you have to recognize that the disorder is NOT the unique, special you you were wanting to be. Healing from an eating disorder really is an inside job; otherwise, progress- weight maintenance, days without purging, whatever recovery looks like for you- will only be temporary. *I wrote a way longer, nicer+better reply earlier, but accidentally deleted it around 4 paragraphs in🙄

he does, he just has a normal amount of fat cloaking the definition. A lot of people do steroids now even though they don't compete because they want results instantly and their body goal is Captain America like they showed in the video, so now the very low amount of body fat roid abusers have is considered "normal" and everyone expects for gym goers to look like Greek statues. 17 year old with body dysmorphia to have him pose with his shirt off and even had fake tattoos on his body. This didn't sound weird to the parent or a producer somebody? I don't think there's anything wrong child but I do think he's too young to make the decision to do this and I think a parent allowing him to do this is silly it still is facing his first name. I went to school with 1600 other kids each year in high school. I'm just kind of disappointed here.

Strength was addressed well in the video: It's not about hiding weakness, but about owning one's weaknesses and transcending them. Mastering oneself is key, and it comes from a place of acceptance- rather than denial. The strongest men I know are easy-going types, who like themselves and can take a joke without being ruffled; they respect both women and men, and would be helpful to either; they can have female friends without having ulterior motives. They are serious people, but they just don't take themselves *too* seriously. Men like that are pleasant to be around, because they genuinely like people. You can't like people, however, when you don't like yourself. Changing one's outsides can give one a boost of confidence and a feeling of accomplishment, but expecting this to supply long-term confidence is usually expecting too much.
