Peterborough is my home town, and I'm glad to see you enjoyed your visit. The liftlock truly is a piece of engineering marvel. At the time it was akin to building a spaceship. The largest hydraulic dam, the highest non-reinforced concrete structure in the world. The Peterborough museum has pictures of its grand opening when global celebrities and architects from all over the world gathered in a little town in Canada.

This is so cool! As a person who lives in Peterborough, I was not expecting to see this! Peterborough is such a small place, so I wouldn't think that you would end up coming here. The lift locks are great! Good to see you here :)

Had such an honour meeting many individuals doing the great loop at my uncles boat at the Peterborough Marina. I really wish you guys would of been in Peterborough the Wednesday night always such a fantastic night. I really hope you guys had a fantastic journey so glad to see you finally got the gold flag. Trying for platinum? My profile photo is the Peterboroigh liftlock in the winter. On the canel it becomes a skating rink from the liftlock to the locks . Since the last few winters have been very mild they have only do it to the swing bring now. But that area from the swing bridge to the railway brodge was my stomping grounds grew up right beside the tracks just a block over.

Certainly experiencing the lift lock is a thrill. I think more thrilling coming down and being at the front knowing that a accident happened years ago when the front door opened before the lift reached the bottom and boats spilled out. Glad you had a good experience.

In this video, you mention how calm the lift (the increasing water level) is in the lock. I read in a loop-related novel recently that you can actually request an 'easy lift' and many lock operators will agree to the request. Love your videos!
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Жыл бұрын
That is possible on some locks! Some Locks have no fine-grained control and it is what it is... although normally Lock tenders will tell you the best place to be or at least give you a heads up if there's a chance of having an issue!

The lift lock is unique enough that the fellows in the control room told me that two of the visitors they had were professional engineers from Israel. Watch out for commercially available maple syrup in Canada. The producers add fructose syrup to make it darker and sweeter. The real deal must be sought out in smaller communities such as Lafontaine (near Midland on Georgian Bay). It is lighter and less sweet but more flavorful as it should be. @@SchoandJoDon't forget to book in advance for a transient slip in Midland. It is your best chance to restock on groceries. Honey Harbour is too expensive and Parry Sound too far off. The wreck of the Waubuno can be found in Massasauga Provincial Park. You can dive it from shore with only a mask. There is a song called Black Water to give you an introduction. I explore by tinny and still have not been able to reach this site, having to retreat to Beausoliel Island several times. It is a bucket list item for me.

There are 2 Lift locks in Germany that are much bigger and higher. One is near Hamburg with a lift of 128 feet, and another near Berlin 118 feet. You should consider doing the loop through Europe you can go by boat from Holland to Vienna and beyond. You can go from Atlantic ocean in France, through France to the Mediterranean. You can go from the Baltic to Berlin and on to the Rhine and Paris.
