I saw a video where Victor Lucas (a long-time game reviewer) argued that the awards should be moved to January of next year. For him, it's a release schedule issue. Games released in December are unlikely to be discussed at the Game Awards of the same year. And even though the awards are supposed to include December releases of the previous year, those releases could still be forgotten after months of other new releases.

The only thing I'll say that Disappointed me in the game awards is that Xenoblade chronicles 3 didn't win any awards, even though I think it 100% earned every single one it got nominated for. Though, I'm not suprised it didn't win anything. Despite how good the game is, It's very obscure, and the 90% of voting power that the jury has probably didn't play it. or at least very few of them did.
