To show how steep the grade is, take a level with you, set it on the rail head and lift the down grade end until the bubble shows level, then measure from the rail head to the end of the level. Or, contact the railroad and ask them what the ruling grade is on that hill.

The ramp to the top of the hill is significant. I observe that the trains that go up the hill and the one that goes down it run at almost the same speed, the ones that go up at full power of the locomotives that pull them and the one that goes down probably with the engine brake. Thank you for this representative video.

You should talk to Carhartt about making you a Hawaiian print jacket. That way can bundle up and maintain your signature look! Maybe an artist in your can make a folding walking stick. Put a gradient of colors on it. You can use it as walking stick to get up the hill. Then unfold it and stick it next to the tracks as reference point for the grade.

Thank you for another day in Crescent Springs, Kentucky area, Jaw Tooth! This is a wonderful area to watch trains struggling up the hill from the Ohio River Valley. The southbound train was struggling up the hill. At around 2:32, the car with the gray boxes on it- is that an articulated flat car? 71 cars on that first train. Wow, that was short. 155 on the next train. 145 on the next train. I got 73 on the last one. But I wasn't sure about all the empty flat cars, whether any of them were articulated or not. I like that black Muscovy that showed up on your farm. I wonder where it came from. He's cool.

My Mom's cousin used to live on Market Street in Steubenville, Ohio, in the 1950's. My Dad, and her cousin's husband would walk me to the train depot there to watch trains. One time a freight with 3 diesels stalled on the bridge over the Ohio River. They backed it down to Mingo Jct., to add a pusher on the rear. About a half hour later, the train came storming up past the Depot, with a steam Loco pushing at the rear! As a young boy, that site was my first & last encounter with PRR steam!
