Chatham Dockyard was a shipbuilding area used from 1586 to 1984. Since 2012, the area has been found on the so -called Tentative list of the UNESCO.
Chatham Dockyard was on the Medway River in Chatham, Kent. The ship construction activity can be traced back to the time of the Reformation, in which additional ships were needed. The origin was on a 324,000 m² area known as Chatham Historic Dockyard. For the period of 1619/20, an expansion with two new mast pools, a dry dunge, warehouses as well as lime stoves and brick factory has been demonstrated. The renewed outbreak of war with Spain led to a further expansion from 1710.
Around 1770, the system comprised an area of 384,000 m² with an extension of around 1.6 km. There were four Hlessing and four large drying socks available.
The number of employees rose to 1664 by 1798, including 49 officers and accountants as well as 624 Schiffbauer and 274 Seiler. Furthermore, block makers, calfaterers, smiths, carpenters, rigger and sailmaker as well as other shipbuilding professions were represented.
In the 1860s, the shipyard was largely modernized to build the HMS Achilles to build the first IronClad warship that was built in a royal shipyard. Further battleships were built until the 1900s, after which they concentrated in Chatham on the construction of submarines, 56 of which were built from 1908 to 1966. After that, nuclear submarines were overtaken on the shipyard.
After the modernization of the last ship in Chatham Dockyard, HMS Hermione, was completed in 1983, shipbuilding was ended in 1984. Only the repair of coastal engine ships was continued by the Crescent Marine Services until 1994. Chatham Dockyard recently had an area of 1.6 km². After the closure, the area was split into three parts. The easternmost harbor basin was taken over by the Medway Ports Authority and is now a trading port. Another part was converted into a mixed residential, recreation and economic area. The 324,000 m² core area from the 18th century was transferred to the non -profit Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust and is now a visitor attraction as a museum.
You need at least one full day of visit to visit the entire museum. In addition to the many buildings and exhibitions, historical ships, such as the HMS Ocelot, can be a submarine from the Cold War, the HMS Cavalier, a destroyer from World War II and the HMS Gannet, a three-mast loop of the Doterel class, from the Visit 1870s. The exhibitions include an audiovisual tour with the name "Heart of Oak", a gallery with many old paintings and ship models, a large collection of weapons, objects and vehicles in the former hall of the large slip system and an exhibition on the "Royal Dockyard Railway “In addition to the exhibitions, the many historical buildings and buildings, such as the rope shop and the dry docks, are particularly worth seeing.
The dry dock No. 3, in which the submarine ocelot is located today, was the first dry coat of Chatham, which was built entirely from stone.
The dry dock No. 4, in which the HMS Gannet is located today, was built in 1840 and expanded in 1908 in order to be able to record larger ships.
The huge "3 panties" is one of the most remarkable architectural achievements that have been preserved in the historical shipyard today. The huge covered slip system built in 1838 was the largest wide-tensioned wooden structure in Europe when it was built. His impressive cantilevered roof was built according to the design by the shipbuilter Sir Robert Seppings. It has a curved “apse” at its land -like end, which is designed in such a way that it can absorb the bow of a ship. Today "3 slip" houses a large selection of objects and vehicles from the collections of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, the Royal Engineer Museum, the Library and Archive and the Imperial War Museum.
