Best tour you've filmed. Irene is absolutely lovely, camera work is smooth and well composed, audio sounds great! Wonderfully immersive tour video! I've been on quite a few subs, but I've never seen such cramped officer quarters! Maybe a Romeo class boat, but even WWII US Navy boats had more room for the Big Boys
@shawns.33769 жыл бұрын
+donaldjasoncrunk Totally agree! You have to respect a tour guide like Irene. She probably hears the same jokes, the same one liners ((poop deck comes to mind...) constantly. Yet she can still find it in herself to laugh and enjoy it all the same. Takes talent :D Edit: Jingles, you need to send this video to Irene so she can see herself if you haven't already! :)

Many years ago my Dad and I visited HMS Ocelot. I'm a Kent local, so the dockyard is about 20 minutes down the motorway. When I visited, Ocelot had just arrived and was missing its dome after an accident bringing it into the dock. We were the only two visitors so we had a personal tour of the sub, including letting the 8-year-old me play with the main controls. Chatham dockyard is just great.

Like you, I was a 'skimmer' or a 'target' too, but I went to school (USN Navy Nuclear Power Program) with several wannabe bubbleheads, and they are their own breed, no doubt. I went to a bird farm and served for 4 of my 6 year obligation (the other 2 being all in school). As large a s a Nimitz Class carrier is, I still had days I felt cramped, and we still suffered from time to time with water shortages... I can only imagine what it must have been like on a WW2 era Submarine. But, as they say in the Navy, "Choose your rate, choose your fate"... and as the flagship of the fleet, we at least got to stop in all the best ports of call (that could accommodate a floating city, anyway). Loved the video, Jingles, love to tour old ships and battlegrounds, and I missed this opportunity when I had a short stopover in London, but this was good enough to almost count being there.Cheers,EM2(N)/SW 'gumborex' on the NA server

So WG chose Chatham Historic Dockyard to announce an early 20th century naval warfare game that ignores and excludes the RN?
@MoA-Reload...9 жыл бұрын
Annoyingly the marketing department seems to be getting the final say on the development schedule. Wargaming aren't stupid. They know the Royal Navy is the one most of the community wants to see. Even their choice of venue there is just to remind everyone RN is coming...just going to be a while. They've still to launch HMS Hood as a premium for a start. While they haven't said they would it's an obvious move.
@San43119 жыл бұрын
+Turbogerbil They don't ignore it, they think like businessmen. There are more German and Russian players playing the game than British.
@outrageousgamer3159 жыл бұрын
War Gaming needs to add a British tech tree into this game and yes I know they have added some British ships
@turbogerbil29359 жыл бұрын
+San4311 Oh I understand their marketing strategy well enough - US vs JPN for the US and Asia market, RU vs DE for the Russian and European market. Its pretty much the same for WoT: British tanks are treated mostly as "meh" fillers to pad the game out a bit. Probably the RN line will suffer the same fate whenever it is dragged out. I'm just pointing out the paradox of having a PR event for a non-RN (for one year, two years maybe?) game in a historic RN base...
@Madhattersinjeans9 жыл бұрын
+San4311 I don't mind it actually. It gives them more time to iron out issues with the game currently and time to balance the existing ships enough that when the RN are released it should be a reasonably smooth transition.

"Submariners are a strange breed". Welcome to MY world, Rear Admiral - or should I say, "skimmer", lol. 20 years serving on USN submarines, 1977 to 1997. Any submariner will tell you, there are only two types of ships in the world - submarines, and targets. In the USN, we called surface sailors "skimmer pukes", and they called us "bubbleheads". Whenever someone comments that I'm a crazy old SOB, my reply is "Of course I am - I spent 20 years going to sea aboard submarines - do you think anyone in their right mind would go to sea aboard a ship THAT'S DESIGNED TO SINK?". MM1/SS Retired. Retnav54, NA Server Oh, one further thing - it's not "sub-mariner" - it's pronounced "submarine-er". Figures that a bloody sparktrician would get it wrong.

+jeremiah9561 Actually, the second sub I reported to in 1983, there was a guy in my division that was 6 ft 6 - he drove a bloody Honda Civic as well, lol (back then, Honda Civics were like Fiat 500-sized). It really depends which navy and what class of submarine you're talking about serving on - at least for the USN, with their big nuclear powered boats, they've been designing them with 6 ft plus sized crewmen in mind since the late 70's. The Ocelot is TINY - you could probably fit her inside just the missile compartment on a Trident ballistic missile submarine. My first boat was one of the original 44 Polaris ballistic missile submarines, built in the early 1960's with WWII-era sub design philosophy still in mind, same era as the Ocelot - it was cramped for living and machinery space as well, though nowhere near as bad as the Ocelot. The second boat I reported to in 1983, a then-brand new Trident ballistic missile submarine, the first time I went back into the engine room, I thought I was in a bloody cathedral. There was so much open space on the inside of that boat, compared to that older sub, I actually felt rather naked at first. Over 18,000 tons - bigger than a WWII heavy cruiser - we had separate 9 man bunkrooms for the crew, a crew's lounge, two separate heads for the crew with two showers each, a separate laundry room, a proper separate CPO Quarters (ie, "goat locker"), a proper Wardroom, and staterooms for the officers. It was like getting moved from a Motel 6 up to a Hilton Suite. The ONE main thing that might be a sticking point would be the sleeping arrangements - those bunks are only so long - if memory serves, even on a Trident, gents that were much over 6 ft didn't have a lot of room to stretch out in their bunks.
@mitchelloates94069 жыл бұрын
+jeremiah9561 TBH, don't think I would have cared for being stationed on a "bird farm" either. Something to be said for being on one of the smaller ships, where you have the chance to at least have a nodding acquaintance with everyone else on the crew.I still think that carrier drivers in WoWS should be called "bird farmers", lol.

The tour of HMS Ocelot was interesting as I have been aboard U-505 in Chicago, the last of the type 9C uboats. I find it interesting that some areas of U-505 were less cramped than Ocelot, but that is likely due to less electronic equipment and possibly a different design philosophy. The type 9 uboats were meant to be the long range cruiser submarines of the Kriegsmarine and I'm a bit rusty on my British submarine classes, so I can't remember what exact role the Oberons were given. Honestly, my submarine fascination has been shoved to side because of some silly game with surface vessels building some more interest in such things as CLs, CAs, BBs, DDs,CVs,and CCs. Bonus points to anyone that knows what ship type CC is.
