Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride was my favorite Burton films as a kid. I loved Emily's dress and even dressed up as her for halloween one year. I thought it would be fun to look into possible the historical inspiration for the characters costumes. Although it is an animation and does not specify an exact date, I will try and see just how historically plausible the film is.

I really like your interpretation of what Emily's dress could've looked like when she was alive. It feels like something that could naturally be destroyed over time as she decomposes to achieve what we got in the movie

I was going to say that maybe they raised the corset cup for modesty in a kids movie. But this was after my instant reaction of nothing beneath the corset which could have also solved this issue.

I also think that the differences in clothing were inspired by the new money not really knowing what to wear/ wearing late fashion cuz they couldnt before and old money being in need to always be in the latest fashion

The way fashion works in a class society, it always trickles down from the Haves to the Have-Nots, and after that the Haves invent something new to not dress like the rabble all over again, and it continues. The Van Dorts have _a lot_ of tells that they're posers.

Victor's parents were new to money so her dresses she thought were in fashion but we're really about five years old so it's correct

this was absolutely my favorite movie as a little gal!! i know that even though they dont explicitly say it, it is set in england, but part of me wishes the setting took more inspo from the original tale!! a late nineteenth century russian jewish folktale- that coulda had some real gorgeous stuff aswell

i loved your version of Emily's dress! but i was wondering, if that's her mother's wedding dress, then it should be 30 years old? (Emily died 10 years before 1890s when she was 20, so she was born in 1860s, if we assume her mother got married before that, then the dress should be from the 60s/50s. sorry i'm not good at maths lol)
@iamvictoriarae
@iamvictoriarae 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not good at maths either obviously, since I said she was dead for ten years. I honestly guesstimated that number. Nowhere in the film did they say 10 years, but that does make it possible that her dress could’ve been 1860s. I was mainly going off the general silhouette of the dress.

@@iamvictoriarae i watched the movie only once so i forgot the dates, i got confused, sorry haha but you did an amazing job with the recreation, i love it. 🙏 the scene where she is wearing a corset without a chemise bothered me so much as well, i can't excuse it, even in a claymation movie 😂

I wonder what you'd say about the dead ladies in the same movie (the bridesmaids). And if we could find someone to discuss the dudes too, that would be swell. Like... Alfred is rockin' that porple suit.

Perhaps Emily’s gown had to be sewn up a few different times as she decayed, as that would cause the fabric to get looser and possibly even rotten as well
@InThisEssayIWill...
@InThisEssayIWill... Жыл бұрын
The plunging neckline might also be due to different fabrics, the gauzy edges of her train are beginning to deteriorate so it's possible that the upper portion of her bodice was a more sheer gauzy fabric and it was simply the first to decay.

I was waiting patiently for you to roast the fact that in the corset scene she is being laced up AT THE TOP OF THE CORSET instead of at the waist. Girly maybe that's why you can't breathe!

Haha that went right over my head! What a good point, I wish I would’ve included that. Definitely doesn’t help the breathing situation

I think they only say it’s “late Victorian” because I feel like we associate that era with gothic culture. But after rewatching the movie, it’s definitely a fun mix of Edwardian (a lot of bg female characters sport large 1910’s era hats, and fashion) and I’d even say to an extent Georgian or Regency era men’s fashion. A lot of the gowns have that early 20th century Belle Époque shape imo.
