In my country Colombia Sega never had a commercial presence and a Sega console was never seen in these lands, but I had a friend who came from a wealthy family and he had a Super Nes with all the accessories and a lot of games in addition to the Sega Mega CD with a lot of other games, for my part I only had a Clone of the Nes and lately a Super Nes because my family is middle class but I always went to my friend's house to play with him and his consoles until the night, Patman QC thanks as always for the great work you are doing and for bringing back memories of our childhood.

The problem with the Sega CD is that it had to endure the growing pains of oncoming technology. The North American game-buying customers (parents, in particular) expected a quantum leap in gaming innovation. By 1990s logic, that meant multi-media. I truly believe that this is the reason that so many FMV games were made, because it was the most demonstrable way to convey the Sega CD's strengths. Ironically, they were the worst examples. The Sega CD's actual strentch was in freeing up resources limited by cartridge sizes of the day. You weren't having to compromise game assets when you're dealing with hundreds of megabytes. The ability to utilize FMVs and redbook audio should have been a quality-of-life improvement but far from the main feature. We really should have had more games like Lunar 2 and Sonic CD and far fewer Sewer Sharks and Night Traps, but that's just not what was expected in the 90s. Even for those of us who did understand this, it was neigh impossible to explain this to our parents. I had a fairly robust Sega CD collection, none of which were FMV. That's the weird thing about Sega CD. If you're really choosy, you can build up quite a respectable collection without ever touching the games that were heavily marketed at the time.

That and it was the first time that you could REALLY port a lot of those FMV arcade games to the home system with no footage lost. (Quality downgraded by quite a bit though.) The FMV games didn't frustrate me at all as much as the lazy genesis-to-cd ports did where ALL they did was upgrade the music.

... shitty, limited RAM killed the Sega CD. NEC did a much better job with their (older) TurboGrafx CD with upgradeable RAM cards. The import library of the PC Engine CD isn't limited to a bunch of low-res fmv junk, either. There are a few really cool Sega CD games tho like Eternal Champions (2) & The Terminator 👍.

The average gamer had more than 1 brain cell, and thus understood even in the Genesis era, that things were going to come in leaps and bounds.. offering to pay out the nose for an incremental update was simply the beginning of Sega's Atari-like demise

I admit, I have a soft spot for FMV games because I was young and was sucked in by the novelty of it, but I agree. More games should have taken advantage of the scaling effects and other benefits.

Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, and Spider-Man Vs the Kingpin, was my Trilogy of Sega CD Goodness! I'd argue that it is the 2nd BEST 16-bit era Spider-Man game too. Next to the Great Sega arcade beat'em up.

So much of Sega's history in that era of gaming is "Sega of Japan and Sega of America hated each other and that lead to them constantly undermining back and forth". It's really a small miracle that they were able to stay near the top of the mountain as long as they did before falling off. Also: Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side was an incredible game on that system and, as far as FMV guilty pleasures go, I was a big fan of Ground Zero Texas. GZT even got a PC remastering not too long ago and I feel it's worth checking out.

I love the Sega CD library! The add-on was a meaningful and Fun experiment by Sega, and it was the very 1st mainstream and well-known console introduction to CD-Rom gaming. Plus every other company, Nintendo included, were getting in on the CD-Rom action at the same time too. So you can't fault Sega for making it. You can however, fault them for making the 32X. Unlike the Sega CD, the 32X has no such redeeming qualities and justification of it's place in history. The 32X was just a terrible mistake.

Everyone dismisses the Sega CD because of that FMV game era, but in reality it did had a lot of quality games like Lunar 1 & 2, Dark Wizard, Sonic CD, Vay, Popful Mail, Final Fight CD and so on.

And the CORE games like SoulStar and AH3 that showed off the ASIC DSP's 3D graphics potential, as well as mixed engine games like Silpheed. DOOM may even be possible on the Sega CD, albeit around 10-15fps and a smaller window.

I loved the mega cd for its sprite scaling games. Nothing else was like it back in the day such as batman returns driving mega cd exclusive. It was more than just mode 7 - it really looked phenomenal. Sadly all we got mainly was crappy fmv games.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It makes more sense when you realize they'd need to either reduce the colors to just 16 (Batman Returns), or cut the resolution in half. (Night Striker.) Not that they couldn't create something good, if they really put their minds to it, but it's not as simple as just cut and pasting an arcade game's assets. And they'd quickly expose the system's limitations if they tried. (Therefore, it's better not to try at all! Genius!) Someone should have still slapped some sense into Sega of Japan, but you can say the same thing for all their other console releases.

The trouble with the Sega CD that it only had 256k of RAM to store game and level data so that every game on it was basically a 256k cart with access to more cartridges. It really needed at least 512 and maybe even a megabit

Yup. It needed expandable RAM like the TurboGrafx CD had.

It had 768KB, or 6 megabits. Including the Genesis, it was almost 1 megabyte, or 8 megabits. Update: Even if we exclude the 512KB of upper RAM, games still have access to a total of 328KB of useable RAM, including 64KB of RAM and 64KB of VRAM.

My brothers and I LOVED our Sega CD. I wish I had the money as a kid to keep my old consoles instead of selling the to buy the next one. I would still have my sega cd and Saturn. There are so many amazing games on those 2 consoles that deserve re-releases. From sega arcade games to the amazing RPGs put out by working designs on the sega cd.

The Shmup "Silpheed" is a favorite of mine for the system. They used real time polygonal graphics over FMV backdrops, but the FMV used the exact same palette as the polygonal stuff, so it all looks seamless. One of the best examples of "faking it", because it even fooled some of the gaming magazines of the day, who believed all of the graphics on screen were being rendered in realtime. Gonna give that wrestling game a try, it looks good.

I bought one of the first production wave of Sega-CD units. A few years in, the motorized tray started getting stuck or wouldn't open at all (not to mention screen freezing). I had to pry it open to remove a few games on numerous occasions and eventually had to put the system out of it's misery. I hate that Sega announced the enhancement of graphics and such only to end up cutting the budget. I mentioned this to a Sega rep that called me around the time if the system's release. I ended up receiving a subscription to Sega Visions which was cool. The reliance on full-time video got on my nerves. I do like that some of the games can be played like audio cd's in a CD player (Final Fight CD for example) while some only play sound bytes (like WrestleMania: The Arcade Game). The rushing out of the system hurt it big tome (in the U.S. and Japan).

Great vid; I appreciate the nostalgia trip! I remember my mom showing up with a Model 2 Sega CD out of nowhere one day, and I remember running it into the ground, thanks to a local Blockbuster location liquidating their stock of Sega CD rentals.

That's not really fair. Yes Sega had problems with regard it's business decisions, but we look back on it all with the gift of hindsight. I personally love my Mega CD and have a great library of games for it. The 32X was completely unnecessary yes, but the failure of the Sega Saturn in the west, particularly in America, was down to poor marketing, not the console itself, which has a superb library of games. Then you come to Sega's final console, the Dreamcast, and again there's nothing wrong with the hardware itself. To this day the Dreamcast is loved by millions of gamers around the world, myself included. Sega just couldn't compete with the vast resources of Sony. Even without their struggles in the business, Sega just didn't have the money to go toe to toe with Sony.

The full motion video games are what sold me on the Mega CD. I’ve got many happy memories of playing them for hours. I didn’t get it on release but a few years after on my local market for £45,a bargain as it came with twenty games including Corpse Killer,Sewer Shark,Night Trap and Lethal Enforcers with the Justifier… I wish i could go back and buy it again. It did look gorgeous sitting on top of my Mega Drive under my TV next to my VHS recorder.

Double Switch was my favorite SegaCD game that I owned from the period. It has been rereleased on PC (Screaming Villians) along with NightTrap, Ground Zero Texas, and Corpse Killer.

I never owned one of these but have played a couple of its games on emulation (Snatcher and Sonic CD, both of which I really enjoyed), but this video did a great job of showcasing some more great titles from this forgotten system. It’s a shame we’ll never know what could’ve been with this.

Back in the day, I had the Sega CDX Multimedia Entertainment System. I made the mistake of selling it and the big collection of both Genesis and Sega CD games like Lunar The Silver Star, Lunar Eternal Blue, Vay, Popful Mail, Shining Force CD, Sonic CD, Dark Wizard, Hook, Mortal Combat, Star Wars Assault and Silpheed on Sega CD, and Phantasy Star II, III and IV, Shining Force I and II, Sonic the Hedgehog I and II, Sword of Vermilion, and Thunder Force for Genesis, plus the C and C Music Factpry Make My Video and the CD+G disc. About 2 years ago, I bought a Sega CD again and currently have Lunar The Silver Star and Eternal Blue, Vay, Willy Beamish, Rise of the Dragon, Silpheed and Shining Force II. I want to get those other games again even though several of them are on my Genesis collections for both Playstation 2 and Nintendo Switch.

You find something that’ll tickle your taint, you stick with it. I had a Sega CD side unit. Some really good games that I fondly remember. Snatcher is a favorite, as is Sonic. Eternal Darkness was a fun and ambitious sequel. Working Designs made wonderful stuff, as well. Then there’s Mansion of Hidden Souls, Keio Flying Squadron, Time Gal…

Never owned Sega anything but a friend had a Sega CD and insisted I listen to the soundtrack for Batman Returns. Spencer Neilsen was the composer on that one. It is an incredible soundtrack and one I still listen to all these years later. Still don't own the Sega CD but I own that game disc, where music tracks are just CD audio which still works decades later. Sega were geniuses and didn't even know it

I found a used Sega CD at Electronics Boutique in the mid/late 90's for only $50. I am very pleased with that purchase. My favorite game for it was Shining Force CD. That got some criticism for not doing towns the same way as the other games in the series but I loved getting a bunch of turn based tactical battles, where moving your characters around the field was important, as opposed to games where none of the characters move around a map with terrain features.

Sega CD had potential to go further till the late 90's time frame with excellent video games they had, but also misses as well. Love Spider-Man and the Terminator. Not only the game was solid, but the soundtrack was absolutely flawless. Even WWF Rage in the Cage was top notch.

In the 1993 film SLIVER, there is a scene where you see in Billy Baldwins apartment he has a Sega CD player in addition to all kinds of other things and I remember thinking “wow, his character is rich, has a sega cd and he is sleeping with Sharon Stone” and thought him the luckiest guy in the movie. Also the Spider-Man Cd game was the best game of the system.

Good video. I have a few additional recommendations. Soulstar - Like with Thunderhawk, this is also from Core Designs, and really shows what Sega's CD unit is capable of. Game play is similar to Sega's arcade game Galaxy Force. Keio's Flying Squadron - This is a decent side scrolling shooter, featuring a flying bunny girl, and characters and a storyline like a wacky anime comedy. Lunar 2 - A different story from the first Lunar, but otherwise, everything that made the first game good is here. Silpheed - Essentially this is an FMV shooter, but the graphics show gameplay that looks like what the Sega/Mega CD could do if it were more powerful. This is more of a showpiece game, where the game itself is decent enough, just not as good as the graphics.

I really liked the video! Very nice! I loved sega cd and personally I think it was highly under rated! If you want to do a part 2 I suggest the games : -VAY (The RPG everyone seems to forget, but one of my all time favourites!) -Jurassic Park (My favourite JP game ever) -Brutal: Paws of fury (way better on sega cd, FMV cutscenes and an extra hidden character!) -Adventures of Willy Beamish -BC Racers -Dark Wizard -Ecco the Dolphin -Mansion of the Hidden souls (It's like myst!) -Rise of the Dragon -Shining force CD (Another rpg) -Starblade -Secret of monkey island (great game, but it's no secret! lol) -Road Avenger -Tomcat Alley -Prince of persia (well done on sega cd) Dune and Demolition man were alright and eye of the beholder if you are into that. I saw eternal champions cd at the end but you never really talked about it, it was flawed but it was the better than the sega genesis version!

Where to begin, In 1992 around November this kid in my Highschool got it and hated it I was in 11th grade. He wished he had a Turbographics Cd because he believed the Sega cds first line up was trash and considered it a short lived gimmick. Since I would have double of some of my video games for trades, something I learned from my Atari days. I traded him 5 snes games and boom done deal. First game I ran out and bought was Final Fight, since then I was hooked but had to wait for certain releases via EGM magazine reviews. My Favorites were FInal FIght, Snatcher, Robo Aleste, Ninja Warriors (Import), Snatcher, Thunder Hawk, The Terminator, Stellar 7, Both Batman Returns and Batman the Animated series, Silpheed, Prizefighter. I owned a lot of these games because they went to clearance fast and my next door neighbor and my neighbor down the street both had a Sega CD. These were great years. During this time I found a dolby surround sound stereo receiver in the garbage with its cord cut, and I put I new cord in and wallah I had an awesome system. Great years. When Lunar Came out I had graduated really early from school and broke my arm in a fight, during this time I played Lunar till 6 am in the morning sleeping all day till 5pm. My dad was getting worried at this point, Snatcher was a valentines day gift by my ex. Just to think I spent the whole winter till spring playing games all night long and sleeping in. I know I am in the minority but I got a Sega CD pretty close to its launch and I loved it when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite consoles ever during the time. Of course a lot of the games don't hold up today. Particularly the FMV games, but I can tell you that I enjoyed those immensely at the time and at least 12 year old me thought that was going to be the future. Outside of the FMV games, we had the best Sonic game, the game that made me fall in love with RPGs and is still one of my favorites to this day (Lunar Silver Star), great adventure games, regular Genesis ports but with great music (I loved playing Hook with the original John Williams soundtrack) and more. I can't make a case that it is worth a look now for someone but at the time I loved my Sega CD

When I got my Sega cd, the KB toys about 30 mins away had a bargain bin full of games for cheap. I bought several sega cd games over the next few months. Bram stokers Dracula, corpse killer, etc.. i miss it :(

oh yeah I remember we actually had the SEGA CD back in the day, I think we got it second-hand at a pawn shop. definitely had a few of the good ones! I do remember being blown away by sonic cd's anime intro and killer soundtrack! one note on snatcher, actually metal gear did come first, I think snatcher was kojima's very next game for the MSX and PC-88 computers in Japan. Snatcher appeared on both the SEGA CD over here and the PC Engine CD in Japan! there's a whole third act that wasn't even on the original MSX/PC88 versions! my dad loved the hell out of AH-3 thunderstrike, for sure! One other game I liked on SEGA CD was the conversion of Eye of the Beholder from the PC. that one they added a fully voiced intro and all new music by yuzo koshiro of all people! a pretty fun point and click dungeon crawler.

I was 10 when the Sega CD came out. But my brother was 16 years old and had a job. He bought it and I have fond memories of playing Sherlock Holmes and Sol Feace. He moved out at 17 and took it with him so I never had the opportunity to play any other games. Hell, until my mid 20s, I thought sonic CD was just the regular game with a CD soundtrack lol. I still need to play that one because I hear it’s awesome. I would love to snatcher though I just haven’t devoted enough time to do so.

I saw this on the feed and jumped right in! I've been waiting for this vid from you for a long time. This is one of my favorite vids from you. I'm a huge sega cd fan and have been since 1993. I've kept my original system from back then like most of them but this one was special. The system certainly had its flaws and the games as well but overall, it's an interesting part of video game history. The original nes has a big place in my heart due to it being YNt 1st system I've ever owned and the first home console games I've ever played but the sega cd is and has been my favorite system to collect for. I compare the sega cd to halloween 3. At 1st, it was considered a failure and folks moved in from it. Years later, just like Halloween 3, folks started becoming interested in the system and it's a very hot collectable now. Halloween 3 wasn't well received at 1stv because of the obvious no myers and a story that was way ahead of its time. The movie now has a huge cult following and is loved by many. Awesome job with the vid Pat! I can't wait to see what you do next. 🤟🔥

The Sega CD was really underutilized we should have at least seen a few decent Sega arcade scalars on the system. Outrun and power drift would have been a perfect fit for the system

Man... these CD systems weren't much of an "upgrade" over vanilla 16-bit systems in the gameplay department. Fancier bells and whistles sure, but usually crappier gameplay or at best, same or similar gameplay as 16-bit systems. Some exceptions obviously, but overall I was more than happy with my SNES experience. Now that was the right amount of technology at the right time! :P Thanks again for the video Pat!

I emulate it on my phone with an 8bitdo mini controller hanging from my interior mirror in my car.... I used to own a massive collection - mainly sega but life circumstances forced me to sell...so im very greatful i can still play my collection all on my phone via emulation- and mega cd is the one I seem to play most these days

Good point PatmanQC about the lack of interest in the motion video games. I remember seeing the ads and not being interested. Had they shown motion games like Dragon's Lair or Space Ace, that might have helped, and as you said, port in the arcade classics but they didn't.

Basically I consider myself lucky. I got myself a Mega CD Model 1 console, given I had found a Sega Mega Drive Model 1 console at a local Charity Shop. I also purchased a 32X to complete the set. I play it at times, utilizing the full capabilities of the system, and let me tell you, it's all good. Not bad for an initial $5AU purchase of the Sega Mega Drive!

You should've added the "Angry Black Guy" SEGA CD commercial in the video during breaks. But anyway, the SEGA CD was definitely underutilized and it deserved more credit than what it was given. As for the price of games, yeah the good ones are obviously the most valued while some of the subpar FMV titles would be cheap. But there's titles like Sol-Feace and Silpheed which are reasonably priced. For the best games, repros are a must.

I had a Sega CD. I can sum up what the problem was by comparing Jurassic Park games. On Sega CD we got an edutainment point and click game. Yeah it had FMV, grainy and small windowed but there. On the Genesis we got a graphically beautiful action platformer that looked better than it had any right to. It would've been a hit on CD with cut scenes and better audio

It's funny how things have changed now, it used to be important to the Binary digits (Bits) in a system. Now it's about how much one can compress, miniaturize, and streamline like using transistors and resisters. You can use a 32bit system with controllers but using Lua program Giga flip\flashes per second(GFlops) have a next generation system on the other hand one can have 128bit polygon based Pascal with no Adjusted peak-performance (app). Don't believe me? There is a Sonic made for Amstrad GX4000 (8 Bit), & Super Putty for Commodore Amiga CD (32 Bit).
