I love early SAM development. It's very interesting to see the first attempts for the US (Nike "Ajax") and the USSR (S-25 "Berkut") have similar ideas. That being a massive, armored, static defense post that isn't supposed to move with rows and rows of interceptors. The two superpowers would then go totally different ways after that, with the Soviets going for many smaller launch sites that can be moved (S-75 "Dvina" and S-125 "Neva") and the US sticking with static emplacements but going for the "Fuck that entire general area" (Nike "Hercules") approach.

Good talk. Lot's of good info, and as always, I love the delivery. I had always thought that the Canadians, Scots, and Brits in the Battle of Hong Kong had the first combat post-Pearl Harbor, but a quick bit of research shows that the 200th beat them out by almost 8 hours. The Canadians were also overrun and captured (but did not surrender) and were forced to build the Hong Kong airport as POWs. They purposefully did a shit job and the first plane (containing the inspecting general) to land exploded as the runway collapsed under the weight of the plane. Japan, of course, never signed the Geneva Suggestion Box (yep, I'm a Canuck), and so did not feel any compulsion to treat the POWs well, and most eventually died. Can't wait for part 2! Please be sure to cover Canada's biggest contribution to Cold War Air Defense - agreeing to place Bomarc missiles NORTH of our major cities rather than have them fly over our heads.

I remember when I was in a squadron on my first deployment on Nimitz. Ships company smoked a cig behind the Rim (or Sea Sparrow, I haven't studied ESWS in nearly 20 years) and the plastic sheathing started melting and smoking (port side, near frame 240). Fire was extinguished, but a dude almost blew up our 150 man berthing with a few AMRAAMs and a cigarette butt. He was caught and had a 1 way conversation with the skipper.

M42 Duster was based on the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank. They took the same twin gun mount off the WWII era light AA tank and slapped it into the replacement vehicle. The rig was too small to mount guns and radar on the same vehicle, rendering it ineffective against fast moving aircraft, and nobody has ever fielded any significant number of helicopters against the US, so its service life was fairly short. It was actually taken back into front line service for Vietnam when they found that the Hawk missile set had problems targeting at low level. In Vietnam, it was found to still be a limited AA defense platform so it was generally used like the Kraut Mower had been in WWII.

I'm from Deming N.M. We have a school and a highway named "Bataan Memorial" and a stone naming everyone from N.M. separated by county who died in Bataan. Context: Our national guard unit was ADA in Bataan. So were the Las Cruces and El Paso units. A few local survivors in the nineties and early 2000s were still messed up by that march.

Small point of issue, the first shot fired by the U.S. in WWII has been attributed to the USS Ward, DD 139, when she open fired on the Japanese midget sub during the Pearl Harbour attack. So maybe the boys on Bataan were the first Army boys to fire, Go Navy! As a side note, we named the destroyer HMAS Bataan in the Royal Australian Navy after the battle to honour the US forces during the battle. And the first pilot (debated) to tip over a V1 flying bomb, yep, you guessed it, a Aussie! Flying Officer Kenneth Collier, who got angered that he couldn't knock this V1 down with his guns and ran out of ammo, so he tipped it over with his wingtip. We're a slight mad bunch us Aussies!

You should know that there were water cooled .50 caliber machine guns used as AAA on US capital ships prior to WW2. Prior to the start of WW2 in fact the USN had these heavy machine guns and 5"/25 caliber short barrel cannons for air defense. This was augmented by 20mm cannon and later by 40mm Bofors. The 5" /25's were mostly replaced with 5"/38 dual purpose guns . I have only ever seen the water cooled 50 caliber once and it was on you tube . I was surprised to see it had the "tombstone " magazines as used with the quad .50 machine gun mount
