So...Akuma was created by Capcom to be a hidden boss as an apology to all who fell victim to the Sheng Long hoax.
@nayyarrashid46613 жыл бұрын
I didn't know about the hoax but I even wondered who Sheng Long was but lack of internet and other gaming magazine never fuelled my interest in this character. I remember vaguely reading about it years later on magazine or website and was pleasantly surprised.
@bastardjustice3 жыл бұрын
It's probably more like they got inspired to make the hoax a reality. Secret game bonuses are a huge thing back then. Especially without the internet, gaming magazines would have a bigger promotion in sales.

As I kid.. the sounds of this game was absolutely EPIC the Arcades & SNES, though toned down.. didn't seem too off to me until I played Hyper Fighting on cabs again years later. I never connected Sheng Long as the Sho-Ryu-Ken, or dragon punch.. that to me sounded like "Ohhhhh-You-Can!!" I just liked saying "You Must Defeat Sheng Long!", & then started to think it was supposed to be Ryu's Sensei. Hurricane kick sounded like Hatek-Tek-TaRek-Tek!.. or something like that. Most sounded like expressions & not real words. I did think Yoga Flame & Yoga Fire was.. Throw the Flame, Throw the Fire. 'Hyper Fighting was extremely popular & such a great successor to Champion Edition & allowed for there to be a balance between Street Fighter II & MK1. 'Hyper Fighting was in the immediate right corner of the arcade, but was replaced by a MK2 Cab? A massive Super Turbo cab was placed in the middle entrance to the arcade. The Ryu, Cammy, Akuma intro seemed epic... But no one played it. I dropped 2 quarters, picked Ken.. inputs seemed off, game seemed broken. I tried again & realized why no one played it, opponents were super cheap & I saw other great players just give up fighting against DJ. Inputs were off, & there was some kind of lag. Super Turbo Ken was majorly toned down from 'Hyper Fighting. MK2 cab had a huge crowd.. Super Turbo went untouched.. though the whispers of what this Ryu like fireball shooting demon character (Akuma) lingered. The Mortal Kombat movie dropped around that time & it was an absolute FINISH HIM to Street Fighter II in that arcade. Went to other countries & everyone was still playing some kind of bootleg of Champion Edition or Hyper Fighting for years. Alpha 2... fighting Shin Akuma with that music.. I believe in Gen stage.. seemed like an Asian Alleyway.. was absolutely epic.

Small fact that wasn’t really known until Street Fighter 4. Because Akuma’s moveset has been a combination of both Ryu and Ken’s strengths as well as Akuma’s own unique abilities, the consequence of picking him in games where he is selectable is that his health pool is smaller. This is true even in the Alpha games but excludes Shin Akuma.

I think Akuma's fight with Gen where he lets him live due to him being ill, is lifted from the Kung Fu film "Prodigal Son" where Leung Yee Tai (a wing chun master) is forced to fight a Prince who is roaming China to find worthy opponents, the fight is pretty close, but half way through Leung Yee Tai has an onset of an unspecified illness (breathing shortage) and collapses mid fight, The Prince stops as he feels it would be unfair to win in such circumstances. Spoliers from here on in... He is somewhat a villain in the film, but is not void of morals. Leung Yee Tai is the master to the main character of the film Leung Chang and is murdered by the Prince's guards later in the film (they have been instructed by the King to kill anyone who is a worthy opponent so the Prince,unaware of this , would remain safe. Leung Chang fights the Prince at the end to avenge his master (as the Prince has already put the guards to death for killing Leung Yee Tai. Great film...which I have probably just ruined lool sorry

Oni. I think Oni is the connection between Akuma and Kazumi in Tekken 7. My theory is she felt Oni rising, sought Akuma out and taught him how to suppress Oni. He has since developed his own style and become friends with Blanka and Sakura.

He's basically Goku from Dragon Ball Z. Even his Japanese name "Gouki" pays homage to that. You also missed out SF Alpha 2 Gold. Where you can directly challenge his fully buffed version in Akuma mode. Surprise, surprise after dozens of attempts I've yet to succeed.

I think in that magazine you showed before the 2 minute a mark wrote something about Ryu having a fatality move called “The Chapel” which was suppose to be a dragon punch that put holes in your opponent.

I liked Akuma's fight with Donovan from Darkstalkers in the street fighter vs Darkstalkers comic event

I can see Ryu using his victory quote in a bar fight. What a pick-up line. What a Sheng Long.
