Love your dolls! You inspired me! I just got Christie Share a Smile Barbie 1996 -eBay! As a little black girl growing up in 60’s all my Barbie’s where white!-Because of the lack of diversity, the Christie doll was not always easily to get on store shelves! Of course that changed when my daughter came along! I made sure she had all types of of Barbies! Now I have started my own collection! I have the black Barbies that I always longed for as a kid! I have a rainbow of Barbies! Some people don’t understand, but having all my Barbie’s makes feel good! I just buy the dolls that appeal to me! They don’t have to be the holy grail type doll!😍😍😍

That’s awesome! Yeah, I’ve heard Christie was tough to find in the 60s and 70s in a lot of places. The commercials for the Live Action set don’t even include Christie, which is insane. Anyway, glad she’s more celebrated today.

WOW!!! That NRFB Christie and NRFB Brad!!!! 😍🤩😍 You probably know from my IG feed that I'm also a big fan of Christie and Julia (and Brad!!!) I have the unoxidized 1968 versions of Christie (even one that still talks!) as well as every other incarnation of her after that, right through to the end of the 70's, with Kissing and Beauty Secrets Christie... I also have lots of Julias, (Love the later 1971 Talking version the best) and also, one of the talkers still talks ... so I'm loving this video!! Just subscribed. 😘

I started collecting Barbies this year after my mom passed away. It brings back memories of shopping with her. I would often get a reward from the toy store if I was quiet and patient while Mom shopped for herself. Barbies, Dawn Dolls, etc. were my favorites. I held onto the Bubble Cut my sister passed down to me. The first dolls I bought this year were ones I had as a kid. But then, I started branching out and looking for dolls I just find fascinating. I LOVED the TV show Julia, so I made getting a good Julia doll a priority. Julia fashions are pretty amazing, too. Recently, I got Malibu Christie because I like how her hair is so different from Julia's and just think she's stunning. I envy your collection. I got a repro Black Francie because I can't imagine affording a vintage one. Am eager for you to get to vids on tips of where to find/buy.

So sorry to hear about your mom, but that’s one of the more beautiful things about barbie collecting-how mother and daughter tend to enjoy them nearly equally sometimes. And thanks, I’m actually putting together a ‘Barbie collector’s guide’ series pretty soon, where I’ll go over all about how to hunt them, how to build a collection, etc. ❤️❤️

In the early 70s there was a television series called Get Christie Love! starring Teresa Graves. I got a Christie doll and named her Christie Love. Hands down she was in my top two Barbies.

Great videos! A little note...Black Tammy by Ideal and Black Tressy by American Character debuted before Black Francie by a couple of years, so she's technically not the first black fashion doll.

Thanks! I knew there were AA versions of several different dolls from the 60s, but never remember which came first. Really should’ve said ‘first black fashion doll from the Barbie lineup.’

Hi, Jack, my name is Nico. You are a Remarkable, Most knowledgeable, And if I may say, extremely hot looking man. I cannot believe I found you. I am unintegrity/Barbie collector. I have always played with Barbie. When I was just a kid with my cousin. So my love for dolls and dresses has been forever. My main girl is Gene By Mel Oldham. From ashton drake. She is 1930's 40s and 50s Fashion superstar actress. I fell in love with her over twenty years ago because she reminds me of my mother from that era. She also has friends and a very handsome leading man. Unfortunately she is no longer In production. I also do other 15 to 16 inch dolls that can share clothes. I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge about vintage dolls, Especially Barbie and friends with all of us.

I'm also a big fan of Christie, I have a ton of examples of her from 1968 to the latest anniversary doll. She'll always be a favorite. When it comes to Barbie in the 70s and 80s, I'm much more about Christie, P.J., Kelley and Cara than Barbie herself, though of course they're all harder to find in good condition than Barbie is. I think my favorite Christie is 1978 Fashion Photo Christie, because she's just so disco in all the best ways, and 1978-1979 are peak Barbie for me. It's when I first got into Barbie as a child, and I remember all of this stuff when it was new and on-trend. I'm also quite partial to Golden Dream Christie, Live Action Christie and Malibu Christie. My favorite iterations of the Malibu Christie dolls are the early Taiwan examples, because I like the reddish undertone of the skintone they used, and I also like the construction and finish of the Taiwan Twist 'N Turn body from this era (though it always needs joint repairs, lol). Kissing Christie was actually the first Christie doll I owned as a kid, but my childhood example broke at some point and I stupidly threw her away thinking I'd never be able to fix her. I lost a lot of my childhood dolls that way, actually. I have a mint and perfect example now, but I still wish I had my childhood doll. Also, Mattel needs to make a repro of Brad. That is one of the most beautiful dolls Mattel has ever made, and he deserves a repro. We also need repros of Kelley and Cara, or at least anniversary dolls. Hopefully the success of the Fashion Photo P.J. repro has sent a signal to Mattel that Gen X collectors like myself want this type of thing.

I just love this era of Barbie and her friends. Love the fashions so much. I could watch you all day talking about these dolls. Thanks so much for sharing. I have just recently gotten some pretty rough mod dolls at a thrift sale. I love cleaning up these rescue dolls and dressing them. Do you do any doll repair or sewing of their clothes?

Christie is so Amazing ! I have the majority in my collection too ! I believe that she is quite revolutionary because she was created in a time when much of the world hadn't still evolved for brown skinned people. Ruth Handler & Mattel normalized the doll world with Christie as she & Barbie could wear the same clothes there-for making them equal ! But it's a "thing" with other dolls I collect as well. As a gay man I noticed that the black dolls are very coveted by myself & the gay doll collecting community ! I have a theory about that , I think that because many gay men have experienced prejudice in their lives. Black women feel akin to them & share a familiarity etc . Thank you for another awesome post !
