Great documentary! Bob Kane sold all the rights to Batman to DC Comics in exchange for having his name as the sole creator of Batman. As we all know now, Bill Finger had a huge role in the original stories and characters with artists like Jerry Robinson who helped define the Batman we know today.

That's not how it worked if you have actually researched the history of Batman. Bill Finger was a ghost writer for Bob Kane, who mostly had other people draw what he claimed was is art, such as Jerry Robinson. But the initial idea of who Batman was came from Bill Finger's ghost writing. He was the person who came up with the ideas that made Batman work. Later stories were told by different people. But this was the original team for much of the first Batman comics.

there is only one hero that i love to the core and with whom i am obsessed so much, Batman. he is so dark and complex character with tragic but so emotional and powerful origins that made a boy into a man who seeks vengeance to restore purpose to his life. person that sacrifices everything for the welfare of his city by putting his life on the line every day. that is his curse and why i love him so much isnt his suit, gadgets, the wealth or women, its his personality which is cold, strict, dark, brooding and angry man who only wants to see his parents one more time. my favorite moments are when batman is on the top of the building or on a gargoyle watching over gotham with his cape floating, that is so epic. my favorite batman was christian bale who i miss in this role so much but i hope ben affleck will do him justice he deserves. batman is not just a fictional character, he is part of my every day life. he inspires me, gives me hope in better tomorrow, that dreams can come true. he is the proof that one man can make a difference and change the world, that is what batman represents to me.

It makes me happy that Bill Finger was mentioned in this documentary, given that only in just the last few years he was finally officially recognised as the actual driving force behind Batman. Still, I can’t help but feel how weird it is hearing everyone speak of Bob Kane like he was the messiah when we know now just how deceitful he was and the great lengths he went to deny Bill Finger’s involvement. Kane’s wife Elizabeth Sanders claims Kane truly was ‘Bruce Wayne’... but he comes across more as the corrupted Thomas Wayne we see in Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. It should be ‘Batman created by Bill Finger WITH Bob Kane’ and not the other way around.

At 33:39 I have to disagree with Timm. Even though BTAS is one of the best representations of the Batman-- the BTAS were NOT "doing their own thing" and DID evoke the Burton movies (more than they would like to admit). That show was heavily influenced by the Batman books of the 1970's, but the show did borrow from the Burton movies-- just look at the Penguin's design, the Batmobile, the 1930's/40's atmosphere/wardrobes of the characters, and the opening theme song, its all from the Burton films. Timm and his people may have the Batman mythology down correctly, but unfortunately they went out of their way to try to ruin Superman though. Timm and his people, purposely made the Batman the center of the DCAU. They even went as far as having Superman's love-interests (Lois Lane, Wonder Woman), and gave them to the Batman. They also had Superman dumbed down, and even taking orders from the Batman. And for that they shouldnt be allowed anywhere near, anything related to the Superman mythology, and should only focus on arcs focusing exclusively on the Batman's mythology-- because their bias tends to show.

But given Superman's origin, he was the first superhero to have that origin (he was also the first superhero period). Superman was also alot more rough in his golden age stories (he didnt think twice if he had to smack man or woman on the mouth), than many people know him to be today. The aliens and stories that youre referring to is from the Silver Age (everyone was obsessed with UFO stuff in the 50's), even the Batman had UFO stories during that time-- due to comics being forbidden from writing about street crime. But it seems that the Batman is your favorite character, and that you dont like Superman for his personality traits. I understand, but Im the opposite though. I like Superman because of the reasons that you stated. Superman is supposed to represents the light, where as the Batman is a creature of the night and represents the dark. Im old school so I prefer Batman & Robin together, as opposed to the Batman by himself. The Batman is a very interesting character, but I find him to be boring with the way that he has been portrayed since Timm's bias in his cartoons (Timm had Batman always being shown as having all the answers no matter the problem, and Superman was portrayed like some useless overpowered alien). Since then people think the Batman can solve everything, without any kind struggle. Its obvious that I like Superman over the Batman, but Richard Grayson is my all time favorite character, with Superman being second only to him. I understand that without the Batman, there would be no Grayson-- but without Superman or the Shadow there would be no Batman.

+Iz Happy Well for me there was always a bit of darkness to Batman as a character especially when his parents were murdered in front of him. For me that origin at 0:15 when I first saw it impacted me far more than the death of Peter Parker's Uncle Ben decades later. Not that they don't sometimes IMHO lay the darkness a bit thick at times these days and often seem to go out of their way to make it about as subtile as an oncoming train.

Actually, nearly every major city has a sub culture of actual real superheroes that dress up and actually prowl the streets looking for wrongdoers. It's not really recommended, but they do it anyway. Oddly enough, to date, none of them have been hurt or killed.

Michael E. Uslan said Bob Kane was really just a teenager when he created The Batman? Bob Kane was born in 1915, Batman was created in 1939. Wouldn’t that have made him 23 or 24?
