Stephen A. Douglas County, the state's 133rd county, is located in the metropolitan Atlanta area west of Fulton County. Created on October 17, 1870, by an act of the state legislature, the county was named for Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois Democrat who lost the 1860 U.S. presidential race to Abraham Lincoln.

Unfortunately, the county was not named after Frederick Douglass. The county was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a favored Democrat that lost to Lincoln a few years earlier. Stephen A. Douglas ran with a local Georgian Mr Johnson as his veep, research the litigious behavior displayed by the state of GA. 6 months prior to the creation of Douglas County by expelling 25 of the 27 seats held by African Americans in the the house. Vacant seats were often filled with confederate sympathizers and scandal in many offices including the Governor's. GA had just conformed half-heartedly to the union and finished their 3rd militarily enforced reconstruction, and finally accepted the 14th and 15th Ammendment of the United States Constitution. You can't rely on wiki to solve your mysteries, nor can you rely on local biased accounts given in books without proper references. Wiki also has a list of places, things, events, etc that were legitimately named after the revered abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Unfortunately, Douglas County is not listed nor did Douglass have ties to GA. Spelling and printing errors may also been a culprit that falsely created this narrative, or maybe it was an unofficial and possibly, ill-intentioned ploy to better the image of our history. I urge you to read from the libraries of Congress in D.C. that provide true, accurate, and recorded accounts that include the state of Georgia in floor debates. Also, dig very deep in GA archives to find the actual Act that was signed in outlining the territory, naming, and other particulars in creating th County of Douglas. Wikipedia can be anonymously edited, I like to see the actual document, which I found after many hours of reading and chasing bad leads. Hope I'm not busting bubbles, the extra "s" is not a fact, just something someone said. Best of luck! -proof the truth - ghost writer

A Democrat at work is to rename streets and buildings because they’re at maximum capacity and don’t understand budgets or business.

I heard of this many years ago. Very interesting. As a Atlantan who has a business and know many people in Douglas county, and graduated from Frederick Douglass H.S. in Atlanta, it would be an honor to have the name back.?
