The Russians attacked A-H for invading their ally, and Germany declared war on Serbia and Russia. France joined against Germany and A-H because Germany was attacking France's important ally, Russia. The war kept raging on until Germany attacked Belgium to go around France's defenses and thus The UK declared war on Germany for attacking a neutral country. It's actually arguable that Northern Wales was the last bastion of the Western Roman Empire as the Romans nor the British officially declared an end to the Roman province. Troops were only withdrawn, with England being the only area carved up by the Saxons. Not until 1284 was Wales finally conquered.

@goldpain4302 It all depends on how detailed you want to be. The Game of Thrones series massively condensed a vast source material in books that aren't even finished yet. The world in that story isn't very different from ours in terms of scale. Of course here's we're talking about 2000 years of human history so naturally we won't be following the same characters from beginning to end. But if someone is creative enough, I imagine there's still ways to do it. For instance imagine each country as an individual character or a family of characters. The 2000 years could be represented as a span of a couple of generations for example. It would be fun to do.

But worlds on huge scales have been built by numerous writers, including the LOTR universe, the Star Wars universe, etc. None of them are as elaborate as the real world, but I imagine a really good writer might be able to 'scale down' the real world to make it fit into a story. And let's say focus on one continent only, instead of the world. Like this video - do European history in a new HBO/Netflix/Amazon/whatvr series. I'd watch it.

I was trying to find out at which point occupied territory becomes that country. Correct me if I am wrong, but according to the Geneva Convention, which was established after WWII, occupied territory never becomes the occupier's territory. In other words, 'right of conquest' no longer exists. To me, there is a great disconnect between this international law and the reality of situations where territory is taken from one country and possessed by another. For instance, if an entire country becomes occupied by another, does it not become the country that occupies it? International law denies this; however, I suspect that the reality of such a situation would be very different.

Is it because of population numbers that the Frisians are left unmentioned? Frisians had an area from the North West of the Netherlands up to North Germany and half Denmark. In the German and Danish parts of today there are still people who speak in a dialect that have a lot of similarities with the Frisian language. Today the Frisian language ( which btw have commonalities with old English ) is mainly spoken in the Northern province Friesland of the Netherlands. Today Frisian is the second official language in the Netherlands. But I believe there are less than a million people who speak Frisian on a daily base. But since Friesland has an history of it own apart from the Netherlands I more or less to see that represent in the video.

This is why it's hard for anyone of European ancestry (like me) to have an understanding of their national ancestry. The borders were forever changing. Just to cite one example, a single portion of the Baltic changed between Prussia, Poland, Lithuania and Russia multitudinously over the centuries. Assuming your ancestors stayed in that one place throughout the duration, what were they? Granted, some regions were more isolated from migrations of population than others, but I imagine there are very few single-ethnicity persons of European stock in the 21st century. Even my grandparents, supposedly each from four "intact" national backgrounds, were not what they thought they were. And that's only checking back 6 or 7 generations with DNA. Who knows what they were 10 or 15 or 20 generations previously?
