The CW is adapting DC Comics seminal crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. This video takes a look at the various Crisis stories in DC Comics which have been running since the 60s. The word "crisis" in a title in DC Comics tends to imply an epic event with changes to their ongoing comics.

Morrison uses string theory at the end. Essentially, in it's smallest form, everything is energy that vibrates as sort of strings of energy. When all of reality collapses, it's quiet enough that Superman can see the vibrations that make up what little is left of Darkseid. He uses vibrations to disrupt what's left of Darkseid and ends him once and for all. Singing is just his method of delivering those vibrations, since "Darkseid always hated music". Simple! Edit: By the way, this is foreshadowed when M-theory is mentioned earlier in the story to talk about alternate dimensions.

I think the subtext of Infinite Crisis, as seen through Superboy Prime, is that nostalgia can be toxic. It highlights how things might have seemed like they were better in the ol' days than they are now, but they're really not as different as you would think.
@WillSams
@WillSams 4 жыл бұрын
Yet, bringing back the multiverse kind of conflicts the message. Infinite Crisis was a huge let down and made me quit comics. Let's keep it real: Infinite Crisis seemed like it was a bunch of writers and editors not on the same page. Somehow, it was coherent but the ending tells you there was no clear direction other than "hey, make sure when can keep the suckers around for our 52 weekly book".

Infinite Crisis is about how nostalgia affects stories. In the story, the Golden-age heroes look upon their successors in their pocket dimension and scrutinize how different it is. They then decide to bring back how things were (i.e. the Multiverse). The Golden age heroes represent fans who liked how the Universe was before, and it shows how that nostalgia can be destructive. Superboy Prime's attempt to kill Conner Kent represents how old readers tend to dislike new characters replacing the roles of old characters. Earth-2 Superman trying to save Earth-2 Lois represents how old school readers want to hold on to what they like despite the fact that the thing they like will eventually fade away. Alexander Luthor's quest for the perfect world represents the lengths that fans will go to get the Universe exactly how they want it to be. When Alexander Luthor betrayed Earth-2 Superman, it represents how nostalgia can be exploited for the benefit of others. To hit the nail on the head, when the Golden age heroes get their Multiverse back, it's a shadow of its former self, and, in Earth-2 Superman's case, it didn't bring back what he wanted. Because they were blinded by nostalgia, they turned into what they were fighting against: heroes who have lost their way. Alternatively, it also critiques the writers for not honoring the old stuff and that it should be kept in mind. This is shown in Wonder Woman's conversation with her Earth-2 counterpart. When she received the Invisible Jet, it represented how we shouldn't be ashamed of what came before. Overall, the message is that nostalgia is important. It reminds us who our characters are. However, nostalgia can be destructive and turn our heroes into something we don't want them to be.

I'm a Marvel fan, have been for years but have to say kudos to DC for their *"Crisis"* saga in 1985. This was on the back of Marvel's 12 issuse run of *"Secret Wars,"* which was a big success for Marvel between 1984-85 and ran through several Marvel titles. I never knew *"Crisis"* started decades beforehand. Thanks for the history lesson, Chris.

Crisis on Infinitely Earths is my favorite comic of all time! I like the idea of multiple versions of every DC hero fathomable teaming up to take down the ultimate bad guy. Plus, I've always been a fan of parallel universe stories in pretty much any kind of media, so this scratches that itch. I'm going into the crossover episodes with no real expectations. I'm not expecting a frame by frame adaptation but as long as they keep with the general spirit of the comic, I'll be happy. I'm curious to see what surprises they might pull out. You can't bring on all of these guest stars and expect that they don't have at least one good ace up their sleeve when it comes to surprises.

Well maybe if DC had a better plan for their cinematic universe (Like Marvel). Put together a team of filmmakers who actually knew what The Hell they were doing when it came to crossover film events. And would get a person like Marvel's Kevin Feige to layout a roadmap. We would have seen more of a shared cinematic continuity as opposed their being no shared continuity as of right now.

Regarding the idea of who are the better Heroes, I feel the idea Infinite Crisis was trying to bring across was that the reason why the Superman and Superboy from the other Earth were only able to be as innocent because their world was more innocent and easier. But when they were exposed to the darker reality in the then main Earth, and the duress of losing Lois Lane they were easily corrupted. So ultimetly the main Earth heroes were stronger and more noble, since they did the right thing even under the duress of that reality for so long. Ultimetly its also a commentary on the medium itself, since during the golden age comics reality was presented as a simpler, more straighforward fashion in comics, whereas the later comics depicted more nuanced characters and reflected the social issues and mentality of other times.

I loved DC's Multiverse. Not only was it interesting to explore, but it was a neat way of managing the characters DC got from the other comic book companies. It didn't need 'fixing'. Was it too confusing? Only if a writer wasn't good enough to explain it clearly. My biggest beef with Crisis on Infinite Earths was that it retroactively destroyed their past history. After COIE, the writers had to create a history that no one knew about. That was supposed to be less confusing than the previous multiverse? Instead Crisis created new problems that the writers weren't really prepared to deal with.

The Golden age guys being jerks in the end is a meta commentary about how everything looks better when you're looking at it colored with nostalgia. The line "A perfect world wouldn't need a Superman" being the thing that snaps E2 Supes in place kinda nails that I think. The point being ya can't go back home again and YOUR favorite era will always seem to be the best but is it really?

Good overview Chris. Just a couple of notes for the more pedantic amongst us - the Superboy-turned-villain in the Infinite Crisis event is not the original Superboy from the Silver Age Earth One continuity but rather a Superboy from a version of Earth that was essentially an analogue of the "real" world, canonically known as Earth-Prime. It did not feature any other DC heroes apart from Superboy. Also, I would question your assertion that Infinite Crisis segued into the New52 directly as the Final Crisis event you reference occurred after IC and the N52 reboot is a result of Dr. Manhattan's interference with the re-coalescence of the DCU following Flashpoint as he spotted a weakness in the fabric of reality and sought to create a universe more in line with his outlook on things, including Superman, who became the more alienated, tragic, armoured version of himself for the next several years until the Rebirth era.

Crisis really is the right word for it. It's frustrating how often all the characters overlapping and crossing over means; continuity issues, convoluted stories, stakes are always dialed to 11, less interesting characters bringing better ones down. They have all these extra timelines, but they all end up pretty much the same. DC rebooting or Ultimate Marvel end up getting just as bogged down until they end up rebooting again.

I was not that big of a DC fan when I was a kid other than a few of their characters until I read the Crisis on Infinite Earths. It was amazing and really got me interested in DC for a while after that.

Ok, here's what Final Crisis is POSSIBLY all about and how Morisson thinks. It is one of the many possible explanations and there's another blog stating that Mandrakk was actually supposed to be Alan Moore instead or something and there are accounts stating that Morisson once said that Flex Mentallo(the mini-series) is supposed to be happening at the same time as Final Crisis and be its alternate ending. Buckle up because this is one huge pasta : So the whole ting is about depression, and about how to overcome it. There is a secondary story running throughout about how DC comics works and Morrison's critique of that but it also serves the depression metaphor. So the whole thing starts with a dead god. That's pretty heavy, and it is a dead god of war at that. Must mean that war is won - and the good guys lost. So he wasn't killed with a regular bullet - he was killed with a bullet from the future (and as we learn later) an idealized proto bullet. Basically the whole chain of events is set in motion by good being defeated by something that hasn't happened yet - it is an idea of what will happen in the future. If a person went around thinking like that - he'd never get anything done. Eventually, the world starts begin taken over by this one-all consuming idea of worthlessness. Everyone infected by this idea become of Darkseid who, now embodies the idea of mental depression. Every newly infected is a part of a psyche focusing on how shit itself is. The equation really does spell it out what it really is all about. Lets sidestep into the Superman story; the short version of that is that this monitor woman is putting together a team of the most powerful superman versions in the multiverse to help out with this universe destroying army that's been turning up. They manage to halt the evil ships for a while, and head off to the monitor's place. Turns out there are treacherous monitors controlling the evil world killing ships. Their boss is Mandrakk. All the monitors are vampires, but they try to be groovy about it, but Mandrakk has become corrupted basically by over eating. Superman and he fight. They are fighting in a world made up by pure imagination; The Bleed - close to the source. In Granmorrisoneese, I think we can equate "the Source" to either the reader of the book, and the Bleed is the imagination of the author - it is all the stuff that COULD go into a story but does not. The "blood" that the vampire monitors drink is the stories of the DC universe itself. Superman wins because he has imagination to create his own ideas, Mandrakk has no creativity and can only absorb and be a villain archetype. So as far as my reading goes, the monitors are comic book editors. (or mostly executives) They are vampires because they don't write stories, (some do but that's because they have dual jobs) they just live of other's stories and they are also responsible that stories don't run wild and destroy the series/universe they edit/monitor. For instance, killing Batman -for real-real and permanent - would destroy ALL worlds because DC comics wouldn't be able to stay in business in the real world without Bruce. The monitors/editors also make sure that continuity doesn't change too much, something they occasionally fuck up because of dissagrements, and sabotage - as the monitors bickering explains. The evil parasitic Monitors don't contribute and don't care about the story, but they feed off and desperately guard the status quo of their IPs. Mandrakk is basically Morrison calling his boss a soul sucking over protective artistically bankrupt asshole. This is a pretty regular Morrison thing to do. (Superdoom from Action Comics is the result of Superman being defined by marketing executives and that grimdark should never be allowed to take root. The entire point of Seven Soldiers is that the (DC) comic industry never moves forward. I find it significant that Darkseid is trying to copy batman, but can't - because Batman has a long and evolved personality. While Darkseid wants vapid factory knockoffs - of course they won't work.) The execs keep letting Morrison call them useless twats in their books, though so either they are really pretty cool, or they don't read what they publish, which is kind of Morrison's point in the first place. I'm not talking about the actual editors and writers here - but the actual executives, the Warner people who makes coffee mugs and toys and (presumably) sometimes thow in a creative note or two. So back to Darkseid and depression: Darkseid IS depression. He doesn't really have a goal other than enslaving everyone and consuming everything. He's already destroyed New Genesis using the Anti Life Equation - presumably taking Apokalypse with it. Telling the New Gods that they're nothing special, they are useless, unloved and irrelevant has stripped them of their divinity. The metaphor being that even the most amazing and fantastic of ideas become useless thru enough mental abuse. Exposing a human to the same verbal abuse makes them one with Darkseid. The more depressed a person becomes the harder it is to pull out of it. Willpower alone is not enough to keep a person from sinking into a (potentially) suicidal pit - or black hole if you will. Hence the Green Lanterns being unable to pull the earth out of the black hole - but they do slow it down a bit. A health mind, and a healthy comic universe needs many ideas and different things to do, when all is one in Darkseid that one idea becomes supermassive, creating a black hole. As the black hole distorts and fragments time and space, the thing that CAN cure depression is going about saving what is left of the universe; Superman, of course stands for hope. The Flashes keep running and they are one step ahead of death. They haven't really been involved with the fighting directly, instead we see them with their loved ones, and they are the reason the Flashes keep outrunning death, the part of the psyche that still feels connection and love for others. The reason that Darkseid can't get the Batman clones to work, is because of Batman's experience and memories. Batman's been down and depressed before, and he's survived to remember the tale. All those things eventually converge on Darkseid. But everything has already been consumed. Towards the end, all that is left is weak hope, and nothingness. Not even depression, just apathy. In the end of the day, there is no meaning in life or the universe. We will all die, we will not matter. We might as well not laugh or tell stories at all, and just be content with doing mindless, meaningless work so that some executive can get rich. But Superman is hope, and hope cannot and will not accept this. But the only thing hope can do is sing and enjoy the sun and accept that while life has no meaning we can still enjoy living. He has made his miracle machine - that is the opposite of the God bullet that started this whole thing. The bullet is an inherently destructive force - Superman has been to the future and has got this creative thing that we don't know what is - but if you just stick around and don't commit suicide, the future will be great, yo. This gives the green lanterns; willpower, the determination to break through. Restoring the ability to create meaning, creates more idea and restorers old ones. The good editor/monitor returns. Unlike the others he is a part of the story and engages in it actively. He's an exec with a heart. That's the sort of executive DC needs, one that knows what it is like to create and who respects that stories have to be allowed to develop on their own with oversight, but not by mandate. At the very end, the monitors agree that they should stop fucking around with controlling everything and leave the page blank for the universe to express itself. Good stories can never die because they are integral to human nature and the world needs them to survive. That is why, in the end, batman is, of course still alive.

I don't really think we lost anything in tranlation for Infinite Crisis. Earth-2 Kal-L and Earth-2 Lois stayed good and incorruptible, it was Prime Earth Clark who was young and manipulated by Earth-3 Lex that went the route of being evil. You are right, that it was a discussion of the last 20 years of DC comics moving towards a much darker route in their stories, and that the current heroes needed to be reminded of why they were saved to begin with, which Kal-L managed to do.

New 52 was later, it happened after Flashpoint which was the real second hard reboot. 52, what happened after Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis, was a badly planned soft reboot that only lasted about 5 years. A lot of people, me included, hate the 52 changes because they mixed up a lot of things, destroyed certain important parts of the New Earth continuity and many other stuff, that's why they came up with the New 52 and later reverted the original crisis in Convergence. Officially, most DC stories happen now in the New 52 multiverse which apparently exist separated from other multiverses that conform the whole DC mythos. Some people believe that there might be at least 5 different multiverses which include the original Infinite one, the 80's-90's worlds and hypertime (DC, Milestone, Wildstorm, Elseworlds), the new 52 (the "old" 52 apparently has no place in existence now), a Multiverse-2 mentioned in Multiversity (which was sort of a mini crisis) and the Dark Multiverse. According to DC after Convergence, "all worlds exist", so there might actually be infinite multiverses. It's a little confusing now.

Infinite Crisis did not lead to New 52 and it was not a universe reset. It led to a 1 year time skip. What happened during that year was captured in a weekly book series “52” meaning the 52 weeks skipped where there is no Trinity

Zero Hour is still my favorite 90s event. Maybe because it was the first one I read after starting reading comics with Death of Superman in 1993, or maybe because Hal actually destroys the entire DC universe during the event. Many have tried, but few times has this actually happened. And it was just a human who did it. I also like the parallel with Parallax and the story of Lucifer to tear down creation and remake it according to his own ideas. Its also like the characters tried to usurp control from the writers, which is really cool in a meta sense. Infinite Crisis doesn't make Kal-L a villain, only misguided. He realizes his mistake in the end. Alex Luthor was the truest villain, and we can chalk that up to the Luthor genes. He corrupted Superboy Prime, and even he didn't go full villain until he fought the Teen Titans in the main universe. Lois stayed good til her death, so I think it's a mischaracterization to say that they became the villains. Final Crisis needs to be viewed through the Morrison lens, as it happens across multiple levels of reality at once. Superman Beyond is the whole conflict occuring on a higher plane of existence, with Superman piloting a giant robot to fight the vampire Monitor Mandrakk. On Earth plane, it's actually Batman who solves Orion's murder and shoots Darkseid with a Radion bullet, and Darkseid falls backwards through time and his passing makes a hole in reality, which Superman then repairs. Darkseid was a higher dimensional being, and his death caused him to fall through our third dimension on his way down to non existence. That's my condensed version. Darkseids revenge is to send Bruce back in time, making him jump forward and gain Omega energy as a bomb to destroy reality at the present, as shown in The Return of Bruce Wayne and the other series with Rip Hunter and the heroes searching for him in time. I forget the name of that one.

They didn't plan ahead. Even when writing individual seasons they don't plan ahead. They just sprinkle in references to comics, and it just happens that they got so big they can do Crisis on Infinite Earths. I think they did chose the name "Lyla Micheals" out of a hat.
