Friday The 13th began its life as a complete and utter ripoff of Halloween. That’s not me talking smack, that’s not an insult, it’s true! But copycat jobs wouldn’t be the monster under the hockey mask’s lasting legacy, though. Over time, Jason became his own man. Or, his own boy, it’s hard to say sometimes. Friday The 13th would step out of Halloween’s shadow and, on multiple occasions, defeat the Boogeyman head to head at the worldwide box office, proving to movie-goers and hardcore horror hounds that, yes, Jason was indeed an icon of the highest caliber. Today kicks off THE HISTORY of FRIDAY THE 13th!

I think your review of part's 1 & 2 were fairly accurate, but I completely disagree with you about 3. Maybe you've been influenced by other influencers, I don't know. You said the acting was worse than other installments, but I don't think so. None of them are Oscar level. You said you didn't think there was a need to make part 3, but you could say the samething about 4 or the other sequels. Part 3 is my favorite installment by the way. Mainly because of Richard Brooker's depiction of Jason. & his makeup job. He was the archetype Jason for me. The thing is with 3, is to make an honest assessment, you have to see it in 3D. I have a 3D tv & 3D blu-ray, so I've seen it the way it was intended. I'm also a fan of the 3D format itself. & yeah, Pamela jumping out of the lake at the end was stupid, but it was only seconds of the film. I would also add, that part 4's Jason was just copying what part 3 already did. Part 3 came up with that version of Jason from scratch. 4 didn't have to do that. Having said all that, it's an opinion at the end of the day. So to each his own. I appreciated the time you spent making the video regardless.

I have a funny story about how I got introduced to the Friday the 13th series. My grandma, for which I probably would have been eight years old at the time, loved to go to the drive-in theaters and we would go quite often to see whatever the latest films were that released. One weekend, Friday the 13th was one of those films. I’ve been noticed to her, because I don’t think she knew what we were about to see. When the movie started and after that opening sequence, my grandma flipped out over what she was seeing. Though, being the person she is/ was, we ended up staying because I was amazed at what I was seeing and was drawn to it. She sat for the rest of the film with her hands over her eyes. A testament as to how far she would go to make her grandson happy. I think about that a lot every time I see the first movie and subsequent releases. Because if not for her, I may have not been introduced to the franchise and love it so much. Such great times and great memories. Thanks for helping to bring some of those memories back.

My fascination with the Friday films started when i was six years old. That was when Friday the 13th premiered on HBO in 1981. My older siblings invited their friends over and the next thing I knew my living room was full of scared teenagers watching the movie thru their fingers as I cowered on top of the stairs listening to their screams and rejoicing in their laughter. My folks thought i was too young to partake in the festivities. They were probably right. I mean, after the film ended, my sister was going to a sleep over at her friend's house across the street. Her and her friend were so scared that the friend called her mom to turn the porch light on and wait at the door for them to arrive!!

Hey Ian I really enjoyed your part 1 of this Friday the 13th retrospective series 👍🏻 I pretty much agreed with you the entire video about the first 3 movies. Cool kills by Jason but a rinse and repeat of same story if you can call it that 😂 can’t wait for the next episode. The Jarvis trilogy is a lot better in my opinion.

Actually, Victor Miller went to go see Halloween in the movie theater as production for Friday the 13th started in September 1979, which would’ve made the beginning script writing during late 78 and early 79 no VCR‘s . I was in Blairstown, New Jersey at the 40th anniversary, where they explained it.

If you pay attention to the deaths in part 1. The clothes that the killer is wearing are not pamela voorhees. So I would say jason was alive helping her kill. He was the one throwing people thru windows, hanging people from trees. Pamela wouldn't be strong enough. Ending was a dream

I was one of those that saw it at the drive ins. My mom was a huge fan of horror films. I was 8. The movie obviously scared the shit out of me. After that it was a continuous watch on HBO the whole series. Saw almost all of them at the theaters. Only the first two I saw at the drive ins. It was such a treat to go to the drive ins then. Playgrounds, fresh popcorn, man the memories.

I saw part 3 in the theater when it came out. Packed house and a great time. The 3D effects were fantastic with even the Paramount logo popping out of the screen. It wasn't the colored glasses type either. Clear lenses and a brand new 3D system at the time.Yes, it looks cheesy now. But I like this movie. Its campy good fun.

The glasses had a grayish tint to them… definitely not the red/blue crap. These 3D effects were the best I’d ever seen until Avatar came out. You can experience F13 the way you did in the theater back in 1982… all you need is a VR headset and an SBS version of the film. It’s definitely worth the effort

I had an obsession with horror films ever since I was as young as six. I would sneak video tapes that I had borrowed from older kid and watch them while my parents slept. The first one was Evil Dead when I was that six year old. The next that would make an impact was Friday the 13th. I still love horror, my favorite genre in just about everything from videogames to movies. I couldn't stand Gene after his tirade about Betsy Palmer being in the film and hearing about him giving out her addresses. The guy had no business doing that and thank goodness it was the wrong address. People even back then could go overboard with threats so he was definitely in the wrong. Great video as always and looking forward to the others.

I'm not going to lie, I've been waiting for this for what feels like forever. Your insight and retrospective on Halloween were fantastic. This was no different. The history of the franchise is something fierce. Reading the book, Crystal Lake's memories solidified that claim for sure. I've always been a huge fan of the genre. Truth be told, my mom was a huge fan of the genre and would go on to name her only child, Jason. Why, you may ask? I was born on Friday the 13th, and that was her favorite series. I could only guess that was the reason, but it would be revealed when I was 25. She finally spilled the beans confirmed it. She may not be with me anymore as she passed away in 2020 but I'll always feel her presence. Thank you for bringing in some much needed memories as I'm going through losses in my life. As a kid in the 80s I used to do the same thing in the video store. My mom would be over picking out the latest Police Academy flick or the latest Steven Segal film and I’d sneak over to the horror section to check out the scary box art. Never rented them of course cause my mom would never allow that but it was always intriguing to wonder what the films contained.

Regardless of Part 3's uninteresting characters, bad acting and goofy 3D shots (such as the sticks and yo yo), the movie built to a great climax (other than the actual ending). But what makes this movie great and my favorite, next to Part 2, was seeing it at the theater in the Summer of 1982. Richard Brooker was awesome, there was tension during the chase, the kills were great and though the 3D could have been much better, it was still fun on the big screen. And let's not forget the Red Wings hockey mask.

@616Entertainment I'd say the 80s was probably the only time it would have worked. Today, where streaming/binging is the norm, watching these movies back to back is soooo hard! I bought the box set a few years ago, and my wife and I made it like halfway through the 3rd movie before we just gave up. I wish they'd reboot the series, but thanks to all the legal bs, it probably won't happen. At least we have the never hike alone series. Those are pretty damn good.

They may have been inspired by Halloween but how’s the rest of the movie from the story line or any similarities between Michael Myers & Pamela Voorhees? I’m going to say that Halloween had to catch up to F13th with the gore. By 2018, Myers became very much more like Jason is than vice versa. It took Myers how many extra movies & a crappy copy write dispute for Myers to surpass Jasons death count. Halloween set the bar but F13th raised it for the entire genre. Yeah, it took 4 movies to get it perfect but its part of the fun too.

Gotta take up for part 3 a little bit.. you say it has no reason to exist but it introduced the hockey mask. Also, the final girl not knowing Pamela and Jason yet dreaming about them goes right into the supernatural aspects of Camp Crystal Lake. They showed that with the ending of the first one.

Friday fans, don’t watch this. It’s a condescending take using every negative take given in Friday docs without understanding what this franchise is or taking into consideration what fans have grown to love. Btw, Savini turned down Friday 2 cause he was working on The Burning. Guess that fact wasn't snarky enough?
