'THE HISTORY of FRIDAY THE 13th' PART IV - From Hell To Space.

After distributing eight Friday The 13th films, the last five of which had drawn lower and lower box office returns than one before, Paramount Pictures had finally thrown in the towel on Jason Voorhees. But you know what they say, when a door closes, another door open. Paramount weren’t interested in Jason Voorhees anymore… which made it much easier for someone else to step in and say ‘hey, I’ll take that off your hands.’ And you know who that person was? None other than series creator Sean S. Cunngingham. Why would he return now? Well, he saw the writing on the wall. Jason was on ice, Freddy Krueger was on ice… If he could get Freddy’s home studio, New Line Cinema, to foot the bill of buying the rights to Jason, the two horror titans would finally be under the same umbrella. The clash of the titans would finally be possible. But it wouldn’t be that easy, as we’ll discuss here today, there were still several stops and starts on the road to the ultimate showdown. Oh, and, three more entire movies, too.

I'm indifferent when it comes to Jason Goes To Hell, and I really love Jason X. Jason X knows exactly what it is and gives you what you expect from a Jason Movie. Not a Friday The 13th Movie, but a Jason Movie. It starts with Jason killing people, and ends with Jason killing people. It doesn't even attempt to tell you a Story. I love it and I don't care to say it.

As a kid, I never watched horror movies, but I LOVED the imagery of Jason X. As a Sci Fi fan, the idea of Jason in space seemed very cool to me. While, I never saw it, going into Party City in the fall, I'd always see the Jason X rubber mask on the wall. It always stood out to me. On a wall full of traditional horror icons, the silver "mask" on the rubber mask was always easy to spot.

Another incredible retrospective! I'm SO glad you enjoyed Jason X for what it was. My favorite kill in the movie is when they trap Jason in that simulation that is created based on Jason's memories and he's back in Crystal Lake with two hot campers that invite Jason to join them for some fun, and Jason proceeds to beat one of the girls to death by smashing her with the other girl that he's trapped inside of her own sleeping bag. To me, it's still one of the funniest horror kill scenes to this day.

Wow, you are a new generation, for sure. I saw Part 1 and 2 as a double feature when I was in 7th grade in 1982. My brother and I couldn't sleep for 3 nights... It was glorious. In 1999 I was 30 years old and totally into Star Trek Next Generation, X-Files had been on TV for 7 years, so Jason X just fell into place . I loved it.

Easily my favorite horror franchise. Each film is a bad B-movie, but each one has its own charm. Never understood the hate for later films considering each film can easily be considered bad with thr exception of Part VI and even Final Chapter.

First off, New Nightmare is arguably top 2 or 3 amongst us hardcore Fredheads, & I did have a similar initial reaction when the film was first released (saw it twice in theatres). Then later on, as I matured, I learned how to compartmentalize the film from the main franchise. Secondly, I LOVE Jason X. It's unapologetically balls to the wall, much in the same spirit (not necessarily quality) of F v J...works for what it's trying to be, like a big comic come to life on screen. Also the liquid nitrogen face smash, as well as the hologram campers in the sleeping bags were both dope kills.

Jason X is fun, you could also tell the cast and crew were having fun making it. Kane himself is smiling so much in the behind the scenes video. It's a shame it wasn't released in 1999 and probably would have done better at the box office. Jason Goes to Hell is my least favorite, it's not a fun movie to watch. It didn't seem like it's cast and crew weren't having as much fun making it and what the director did to that actress was inexcusable. I'll take a movie where the cast and crew are having a blast over one where there's tension on set any day of the week. I've been enjoying this series, happy Friday the 13 and thanks for putting this together.

I've read Todd Farmer's original script for Jason X, and I've talked to Todd at length about the production of the film. I've heard stories about the making of Jason X that have never been talked about publicly. Todd's script wasn't the problem... it's everything that Sean and Noel did to the script during production that turned it into what we got.

First off, I love the Scream Sequence challenge! Secondly, I liked both of these movies for the same reason. They're incredibly stupid and give me a chuckle. You breaking down how Final Friday was made certainly hurts it now, but U overall still enjoy the idiocy. I’ve really loved all of these reviews of the Friday series. I have always had a love for horror movies, but a weak stomach. So these ones were always too much for me. Watching these 4 parts have given me a great understanding of the actual story of Jason Vorhees. This was great and I’m excited for the Scream Sequence coming up! Hopefully you’ll cover Chucky! When this came out he got me in to the theater to see somehow, and man what am experience. I remember just being so amazed that I got to see it in theaters. The thing I appreciate about the film other than it's a movie involving Jason is that it tried something different. Different doesn't always resonate with good but it is very different from the others. I do think there should have been way more Jason for sure. When i saw this when it came out, it took me forever to even attempt to understand what was going on and everything as it came out before the internet and that was a very different time to say the least. Jason X is one of my favorite films out of the franchise, mainly because it was a polar opposite of Jason Goes to Hell. I watch it every couple of months and still pop for the LN2 face smash scene. In 2002, the first Resident Evil film and Jason X were released. I remember going to theaters with my mother on their respective opening weekends. As with any movie we watched together, my mother and I would point out the corniest moments of each film and reference them on a frequent basis. My mother passed away at the young age of 46 in 2012 after a battle with cancer. Whenever I rewatch Halloween '78, Resident Evil, or Jason X, I fondly remember our tradition of absolutely shitting on the terrible dialogue . As always, thank you for another great retrospective! The amount of amazing content on this channel is a testament to your dedication. 🫡

Seeing the Necronomicon in Jason Goes To Hell, is one of the best cameo I've seen in horror movie history. Of course showing Freddy dragging Jason's mask, that lead to a future crossover that came out 10 yrs later. Not to mentioned a comic crossover with Ash Williams. Let's not forget the infamous Uber Jason in Jason X. They just looked at Alien, and decided to put Jason in outer space. Both of these movies is a mess, but an entertaining mess.

I used to really hate on Jason Goes to Hell but as I get older I really realized it is whacked out and weird but by god, it is memorable. I remember the weird scenes, I remember the confusing choices and the off the wall dialogue. So, in a way the film worked.

Jason X was the first Friday the 13th I watched. I can't even remember how I watched it, but it would've been at my friend's house where his parents were cool with watching those kinds of movies or I watched it on very early KZbin where sections were cut into parts to watch the whole (I know I did it that way for A Nightmare on Elm Street 6 as I was watching it while I was at middle school and the emergency drill went off at my school when the guy or Freddy pulled the parachute chord lol). And yeah, this is where the "issue" of retrospectives go when the producer, director, writer/whoever has leverage on the film just takes the project as their own and clearly isn't respecting the franchise they're working in. There's adaptation and you want the people working on it interested, but it explains where all these kinds of people are in the industry and will alter whatever franchise they're working on, just because they can, and get mad when the audience doesn't like it. And yeah, when I watched Jason X, I distinctly remember the being pulled out of the ship into space death scene. While I'm a lot older and know how fatal that kind of moment is, I found the scene very lack luster as a teen because it felt too cartoonish of a death scene compared to everything else in the film. Makes me wish the director and writer got to make the Jason X they wanted as it's clear Sean was a backseat director and did things that caused issues throughout filming (Granted, he wasn't the only problem with the film, or rather, for the film to come out). But, seeing how Sean let things happen in Part 9, it's just disappointing to see where Jason X was overwise an alright film. Granted, it's the one film I would gladly go back and watch compared to a lot of the other Friday the 13th films

I like Jason Goes to Hell. It's not a good movie, but it is a movie I enjoy. It's a better Hidden sequel than the actual Hidden sequel. And I think it's fairly well directed for a movie made by a kid who had never directed before in his life. And I couldn't give a shit what Sean Cunningham thinks about any of this. The franchise has always been a rip-off money con for him (the original was literally made to capitalize on Halloween). Jason X is the GOAT. It's a bad film, but it is an amazingly entertaining bad film. I was working at a theater when it came out, and I could see movies for free. I saw it 17 times while I was working there. I love this film.

I think the reason people ask "Why do a retrospective on something you hate" is they're looking at your views on the whole thing You didn't like the first one, hated the third one, hated the fifth one, hated the seventh and eighth one. The second one you liked but didn't overtly praise, you could appreciate Jason lives, and you loved The Final Chapter. These are fine opinions to have, of course, and it doesn't keep you from being a fan. But I can understand why some can misinterpret it as you hating the franchise since you tore apart most of these movies. Still though these are great videos, keep up the good work!

See I’m not with you because I never said I don’t like the first one. Ever. So immediately there’s a complete misunderstanding. Some people just want to hear that the thing they like is the greatest. It’s all great. That’s fine if some people want that, but they’re going to have to find a channel that will tell them what they want to hear. Jason X is a great Friday movie to introduce a young horror fan to the franchise. You watch this movie and it's equal parts gore and laughs. It has a light, action movie, tone with one of the most iconic killers in film history. If this is your first Friday movie, then you can watch the others like they're really detailed, awesome prequels... and you get what you pay for! Because like you said, Jason X is a Friday movie, just set in a different time and place.

For Jason Goes to Hell, I’ve feel like the plot should’ve been something like this.. The towns people of Crystal Lake are tired and fed up with Jason, so they want something done. The mayor doesn’t do anything or believes in Jason until his daughter gets killed by Jason at some end of the school year lake party. So the town of Crystal Lake (or whatever it’s renamed to be) puts out an Ad for Bounty Hunters/mercenaries to kill Jason. There’s a whole scene of tons of Mercenaries coming into Crystal Lake’s town then going to the Lake. At the lake all the bounty hunters/ mercenaries all died from Jason. The next day the mayor seeks out Tommy Jarvis for help, but during that time Ginny from Part 2 shows up to the town and she’s a some high up government job and wants to capture Jason and bring him to a lab. The National Guard gets send to Crystal Lake, the capture Jason, he breaks out in the middle of the town. Tommy Shows up, Jason kills a bunch of National Guard soldiers. Tommy and Ginny team up to kill Jason once and for all. That’s how I would’ve done it. Probably a stupid idea but oh well

My PERSONAL opinion: The Final Chapter had the most vicious Jason, my favorite cast, my favorite climax, and the greatest collection of kills in a single Friday movie. Part 2 was the overall scariest. Part 5 was the most consistently hilarious, and Part 6 was the most stylish and for my money the last great entry in the franchise. The rest (most of them) have their moments. I don’t care at all for JGHT or Jason X, but for those of you who do, more power to you - enjoy.
