I love Gnome, especially on my Laptops. I am running KDE at the moment because I have the hardware to make it gorgeous while performing really well but you cannot beat gnomes workflow. You can throw the screen around and jump in and out of virtual desktops using 3 fingers on the trackpad. It really does have the best workflow I have ever seen.

Gnome is amazing to use with a touchscreen. Sure Linux doesn’t have good touchscreen support but it really doesn’t matter with gnome.

Yep, GNOME is great to use on touch screens, but what do you mean with Linux not having good touch screen support?
@rantzntirades1104 Жыл бұрын
@lenni-builder Linux treats the touchscreen like a second mouse and not an actual touchscreen. It's very clunky to say the least but gnome is still a great environment with it regardless.

I can't use Gnome it doesn't even have a basic feature of remembering windows position after closing. That alone is a deal breaker for me. I guess if you're using a laptop or touch device Gnome would be better. It is not good on large displays with more screen real-estate.
@rantzntirades11049 ай бұрын
@@gardenstateboss honestly I use it on my 43 inch 4k TV. I see where you're coming from but that can be fixed by playing with the scaling settings. All of my displays are high DPI displays and gnome works beautifully with them. Honestly for me I like being able to tap the super key and seeing everything thats open. The workflow is just really smooth and seamless. My 2 favorite desktop environments is gnome and hyprland but the deal breaker for hyprland is that my main display is 144hz and its not straightforward capping it at 60 like in gnome. I have to cap it at 60hz because it will start randomly flickering if the refresh rate is higher.

Video should be titled "A history of GNOME's UX", because there is so much going on behind the scenes in terms of architecture between versions. No mention of CORBA, dBus, Bonobo and so on. That's why users don't understand why all these versions and "reinventing the wheel": they only judge by the UX.

I started using Linux, in the form of Slackware, in 1997. My first Windows Manager was TWM. I believe I graduated to XFCE thereafter, but I may be mistaken. I had a keen interest in the development of Enlightenment and still fire it up for nostalgic reasons to this day. For that matter I still use eTerm. I remember when KDE was a baby as I used it extensively too. Right now, I am back to XFCE, albeit in a heavily modified form. I did use Gnome for awhile, but was no fan of the 3.0 update. I use it when I have to. I do still like it in the form of MATE. Past that, I really like the tiling window manager Awesome.

I miss the vertical desktops....they were better than the current horizontal ones imo ... especially when using two display, the vertical strip of previews were placed side by side in the edges of the displays to easily move windows around with little mouse movement. Now they are at the top center of each display ;_;

GNOME3.x/4.x must be Windows 8's brother in law. At least the devs improved their touch input orientated pos to a point it is actually usable and expandable so even on a large desktop screen it's quite good. Personally however, I gave up on it and went back to KDE after being annoyed by earlier 4.x releases.

I love Gnome, since V2. But there are lacking features (why no more tray ? Just why ? Who, in the team thought and convinced others that walking with one leg was more practical) that make me waiting for the better alternative, one day, because I know they think for instance that people don't need tray. Meanwhile, I use Gnome with extensions (I hate extensions, because they come and go, live and die, they are not part of the system). Cosmic DE is haunting my dreams this year, promising me natively everything I've got with Gnome and extensions (tray and advanced smart tiling, customizability). Are twenty years of love about to end ?

IMO KDE Plasma is so much better than GNOME
@gljames24 Жыл бұрын
I'm of the opposite opinion. Despite the fact that many people say KDE is better for customization. Gnome extensions are honestly so much more powerful and easy to use than the spaghetti of features on KDE. It's much easier to add to Gnome than it is to remove from KDE to get the UX I want.
@Rac3r4Life Жыл бұрын
@@gljames24 Nah. I used GNOME for years, and I always found extensions to be extremely buggy. Plasma has a lot of options, but it's not that hard to use. Every extension for GNOME just adds functionality that is already built into Plasma out of the box. Once you set it up all you need to do is back up your .config files to instantly return to the way you want on a reinstall.
@Rac3r4Life Жыл бұрын
Also, the single biggest problem with extensions is that they break on updates and it's endlessly frustrating. Why use GNOME with tons of third party extensions that introduce all sorts of issues just to get it functional for me when I can just use KDE and easily set it up any way I want with no extensions necessary?
