Helmets no matter what were going to become a thing... I think. but if you've ever wondered what the process of adding helmets into hockey was like then here is the history of helmets in hockey!

Once the skaters in hockey started to bend the end of their hockey sticks goalie masks became a necessity. Back when all hockey players played with straight sticks it was a lot harder to elevate the puck. And goalie masks allowed the goalies to get a lot better. You would've never seen goalies start using the butterfly split style of goaltending without a mask.

Great video, some people don't understand how important a helmet is until there the one who gets a puck to the head
@bluebear19854 жыл бұрын
I think Red Kelly wore a helmet for a while when he played for the Leafs in the 1960s. Also, when it came to masks, Gump Worsley was always hesitant to wear one. I believe he only actually wore one in the final few games of his career, when he was with the Minnesota North Stars in 1974.

How about best puckhandlers of all time; best shooters of all time; toughest players of all time (not just the Bob Probert era. Think Don Cherry era and before. Lots of tough hombre's in the NHL over the decades). Just my thoughts.

Didn’t visors come about because a player lost an eye? I remember reading that someplace, but of course I can’t find it now.
@jayman68682 жыл бұрын
@@vegasrenie There were a couple of serious eye injuries that led up to the visor rule. Bryan Berard almost lost an eye and had to be fitted with a contact lens to bring him up to minimum league vision requirements. I think I remember a young player from the Marlies in the 70's losing an eye.

@Chiefsfansince-qb1kt5 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed this interesting video on the evolution of hockey helmets. A few corrections in pronunciations might be helpful in future videos. The name of the player wearing the Chicago Blackhawks sweater was Bill Mosienko (pronounced "Moh-zee-ENK-oh." The name of the Montreal Canadien's player who was mentioned along with Maurice Richard is Elmer Lach (pronounced "LOCK." and the Head Coach of the Canadiens who was mentioned was Hector "TOE" Blake, not "TOM Blake." A little later, the narrator mentions the name of Boston Bruin's goaltender Gerry Cheevers incorrectly. He said: "Shev-ers," kind of like the word SHIVERS, when it's actually pronounced "CHEE-vers, with the 1st syllable of his name pronounced like the word "CHEESE", only without the 'SE' on the end of the name, and the last syllable as "vers," almost like the word VERSE. And the name of the Minnesota North Stars player who was injured and died on the ice was Bill Master-TON, not Bill "Master-SON." Otherwise, good stuff, especially the pics of the Japanese goaltenders wearing the baseball catchers masks. Not sure where those were dug up, but they were absolutely fascinating. Thank you for all of the efforts involved in producing this piece. It was entertaining and enjoyable for sure.

In the late 1980s... a few fruits began adding a plastic shield onto their helmets to give facial protection. They always (sorry, I know it's a crass opinion but that's only thru today's revisionist history) looked like total wimpy cowardly dorks. Ahhh, I'm so fragile. I may get hurt. Help me. Protect me.... That said, then the few guys refusing to wear any helmet well into the 1990s started to look ridiculous for the opposite reason. Look at me, I'm so cool and tough and masculine and fearless... A happy balance between reasonable level of safety and an absurd cocoon or bubble of guaranteed safety should exist. It's the balance of being too wimpy and being too cool for school. Nobody likes either type of person.
