You can’t have a indie game vid like this without mentioning Cave Story. For many this is the true first big indie game that popped up online also in 2004. Although I’d say half-life 2 definitely had influence on many developers, you wouldn’t look at it and say : “I can make this” (at least at the time) as indeed Valve wasn’t a small studio, with small amounts of funding. Cave Story is said to have inspired many indie devs no matter how small. And it makes sense, as Cave Story was made by one dude (daisuke amaya) on his free time over the course of five years. everything was made primarily by him; engine, gameplay, story, art design, music, even the program used to make the music in the game was made by him. It was released for free online in a time where you really only found flash games online. It became pretty popular, but seems to have faded away nowadays in terms of mentions. The game can still be played for free right now actually, but so many ports of it exist (including one on steam) you have lots of choices. For more info on it: try watching ProbablyJacobs review on it kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnO9houbi8eDjas

You're definitely not wrong. We also have a video on "best games made by one person." and we talk much more in length about Cave Story's importance there, especially in how it showed people that they didn't have to be a big studio to create a wonderful game. (It's here if you wanted to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3iWe4Bre6-KirM)

Found this by searching for basically this exact topic- great vid! Subscribed now I love finding smaller channels, it can be hard sometimes because YT rewards popularity, creating a positive feedback loop- but your content is very high quality with really interesting things to say- I definitely believe you're on your way up, keep it up!

Thank you very much! Yeah, youtube is pretty punishing for smaller channels, but we are working hard to break through! Feel free to share our stuff with anyone who you think would like it and maybe join our discord! 😃 discord.gg/5FQC9W4

Pretty interesting! Today the barrier to indie games is fuzzy by now

Great point about indie games having always existing on the PC. It's not that AAA games suddenly became bad in the last few years, it's that AAA games weren't the only type of game that existed 20 years ago.

I think you've missed two important pieces in that story. Flash games and iPhone/Android games. Those were only open platforms for a very long time, so those platforms became a home for many indies, for many years. Even Braid was rejected for steam publishing until it became a hit on xbox360.

We did spend some time talking about flash games in the video, but you’re right that we didn’t touch on mobile games! It ended up bloating the script and we cut it for time.

0:06 I always had an easy answer. In my opinion studio should not call themselves indie, if most people in that studio are working for salaries. Those people are not independent, they can be fired tomorrow.

On the one hand, every minute or so I was thinking "Why did he skip over X? X is SO IMPORTANT!". Like how games written in BASIC by college students on mainframes and minicomputers laid the conceptual foundation a lot of the early personal computer games that weren't arcade ports. Or like how Steam was originally created just to distribute Counter-Strike patches, and Half Life 2 probably would have been yet another Valve game published by Sierra if Sierra hadn't gone bankrupt. Also, wrong Duke Nukem, dang it: Duke Nukem 1 and 2 were released on shareware years before DN3D. But the real problem is that this is a single 17 minute video and not a year-long twenty hour megaseries like other KZbinrs have done. I highly recommend GamingGHD's Years dot Game series... which still had to skip over a lot of stuff. kzbin.info/aero/PL52LkmrCqdmTAh9ORpFe2OvXwVM1XvRDl

Haha, thanks! Yeah we ultimately decided against it because it was turning out almost as boring to watch as it was to read 😅, but trust me, we’ll have more boring legalese coming in a later video! 😄
