The Switch ("NX") turned out to be exactly had it was hyped to be. Long live handhelds.
@Loremastrful8 жыл бұрын
While this isn't directly in line with the theme of games and play, it is worth noting that the reason we have smartphones today is because of handhelds like the Gameboy. Handhelds created a market for small but power microprocessors. It also reinforced a growing realization that computers didn't have to been big boxy mainframes or desktops. Computer chips kept getting smaller, faster and more powerful. And designers and programmer looked for new ways to do more with the expanded capability. This is the reason why we have quad core processors and high def screens on phones today. And all of this happened within one lifetime.

I feel like there should have been mention of Tiger Electronics' many, *many* LCD-based games in the 80s. They were really what bridged the gap between the Microvision and the Gameboy. I think they were also what proved handhelds could work, as long as they were affordable and featured popular titles. (Since most of the Tiger games had little *else* going for them...)

Umm no. That is greater than. It is implicitly putting the sale of the console (or 'x') at the other side of the equation - so that x>300000. This means that x is greater than 300000. So Shawn is correct.

I had an Atari Lynx, then GBA, then GBA SP, and lastly PSP. Good memories but I've had more enjoyment on the iPhone and recently my iPad. Amazing early games on the go like Ridge Racer, Dragon Quest, and Angry Birds, to recent titles like CSR Racing 2, Final Fantasy Record Keeper, and Fortress Legends. True portable experience with hardware that keeps getting better will ensure that Smart phones are the future of mobile games for years to come.
@creativeusername64538 жыл бұрын
Mobile gaming is a far cry from real handhelds. games made for dedicated systems like the 3ds and Vita are real, console level experiences mean to be played for extended periods of time with the option for portability. iPhone games on the other hand are designed for quick pick up and play sessions for 5 minutes or less. if you're OK with being entertained for 5 minutes at a time that's OK but you can't compare angry birds to a 40 hour rpg on the 3ds. that coupled with the lack of buttons and huge battery drain lead to phone games being inferior
@chinito778 жыл бұрын
You missed the entire point of this video series then. A game is a game regardless of the medium. There are casual games like angry birds and there are plenty of hard core console games on iOS and Android. Are you saying that playing 40hrs of some crappy 3DS game makes for a hardcore experience? I've spent that amount of time on games like Chaos Rings which is made by Square Enix. I've had "console level" experiences with games like the Real Racing series. Which not only look better than some portable consoles but spent lots of money on In App Purchases. Game developers want money and guess how they make lots of it? Not on the next mario game for 3DS. So go ahead and spend money on a portable console which you don't always carry everywhere you go unless you are some child with no real world responsibilities and lots of time on your hands. Smart phones WILL replace dedicated portable consoles so don't kid yourself.
@creativeusername64538 жыл бұрын
chinito77 smart phones will not completely replace dedicated handhelds because not everyone likes short 5 minute games and micotransactions. Nothing on mobile comes close to the kind of games I want to play so I sure as hell aren't going to dump money into it but I spends tons of money on great games for the 3ds and Vita. Don't you see that there's a difference between something like kid Icarus on the 3ds and short mobile distractions. If you only want to play quick 5 minute games more power too you but there are 60 million 3ds owners that bought the system specifically to play console level games on the go. I personally don't get any enjoyment out of cheap mobile games, give me a deep experience or I'd rather kill 5 minutes by reading the news or checking Twitter
@chinito778 жыл бұрын
I don't think you are read my post carefully. There are great games which take hours if not days to complete on a smart phone or tablet. Also, you are trying to justify console sales with people buying games??? There are more people who bought Wii's, DS, PSPs, and they just sit there collecting dust vs people who bought them and tons of games. I bought only 2 games for my PSP and only 3 games for my DS. It was such a chore to take those on the road with me. I do school work on my iPad and then use that same iPad to sink 2-3 hours of game play. At this point let's agree to disagree. You seem to have loyalty towards Nintendo or Sony and think people would rather carry a PSP or DS in their pocket all the time and sit home to do "hardcore" gaming. For some reason you also fail to see that the same games on these dedicated devices can be played on a mobile phone or tablet. So go ahead and continue to support the developers with your one time purchase and I will go ahead and pay via multiple IAP as needed. In the end, mobile gaming will continue to thrive.
@creativeusername64538 жыл бұрын
chinito77 the overwhelming majority of 3ds and Vita games aren't on mobile. I can't play persona 4 on a phone or kid Icarus or gravity Rush or fire emblem or tons of other games and thats the point you're missing. Shin megami tensei apocalypse feels like a full fledged home console rpg and it's only playable on the 3ds and there's absolutely nothing like it on the app store and hardly anything comes close to its level of quality and as long as the 3ds keeps getting games like that I will continue to support dedicated handhelds. If you seriously only found 2 or 3 good games for amazing systems like the PSP and ds that's your own damn fault you weren't looking very hard. I own well over 60 games across all of my handhelds and guess what out of all of those only 4 are available on available on the app store. Have fun missing out, hopefully angry birds is enough of a time waster to keep you entertained

The 2ds was mainly aimed at kids. Energetic children have a tendency toward breaking the dual screen in two. In addition to that, the 3d function could potentially being harmful to their sight. That is why the differences from the 3ds were implemented into the new version of the handheld console.

You claimed the DS was slow to warm up. This is false. Nintendo was concerned that the DS would not be a success, so they claimed they were going to release it beside the GBA and GameCube as part of their, "Triple Threat Strategy". To their surprise, the DS was extremely successful. To the point where Nintendo started moving unreleased GBA titles to the DS instead and killing GBA support. The system especially took off with the release of Mario Kart DS.

The GP32 and GP2X are fantastic, and the reason they failed wasn't a marketing failure, but I believe it was either a lawsuit or a threat of lawsuit, from Sony, Sega, And Nintendo, Due to the number of high-quality Emulators for the system, for the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, and I think Gamecube and PS2. the DIY Crowd didn't really do much else that I'm aware of. that's pretty much what they're known for, is being emulators.

The PS Vita would easily be able to compete with and possibly exceed the PSP if Sony actually gave it first party support and AAA (or even AA) games. Right now it's just sitting pretty as an (amazing) JRPG and otome machine. It could also possibly flourish if Sony gave it a proper Playstation Store with a lot of PS1 and PS2 games.

Mainly, just not letting the handheld rot away. I have a first gen vita and I love it, but the reality is sad and makes me angry about sony. They released the ps tv to finish it off! Quote I made the same investment being a huge SMT fan, while I had a lot of other reasons to purchase the handheld marvel, such as the extra horsepower and trophies, I know a lot of people who felt the same as you; though a far cheaper PS TV would clear up any doubt on playing (most) vita games without buyers remorse.

The thing that really killed it was the proprietary memory cards sold at RIDICULOUS prices. I only use my vita for classic gaming, but the memory card situation is insane, and seeing as how production will likely to be discontinued at some point in the near future, these cards will only likely increase in value.

Speaking of the NX: Any news? Sony and Microsoft have already released upgraded versions of their 8th generation consoles and are finally embracing 4K. Nintendo's Wii U isn't selling very well, there is hardly any news about the NX and developers have pretty much abandoned the Wii U. Nintendo would do far better by focusing on a console capable of competing with the PS4 and Xbox One, instead of trying make some sort of hybrid system. The Wii U sort of tried that with its tablet controller and it didn't really work that well, even though it was pretty cool at first.
