Its rare to come across a genuinely good, factual and well researched documentary on BJJ history and its lineage. Most stuff out there is just marketing at best or Gracie family propaganda at worst. I'm really glad you correctly explained its origins in Judo and why it is called jiu-jitsu in Brazil. You earned a subscriber.

I was a brown belt in Judo Sankyu which =Blue belt in BJJ and I took a flight from FL to Rickson's school in Los Angeles in 1994 but Rickson was in France teaching a seminar. So I spent 1 week training at Rickson school and beat the crap out of all his students. So I did NOT learn shit. So I thought it was just my size so I asked this big guy to roll with me. He showed up and while I was beating him with Judo technique the teachers told me to chill out after this douche tried to gram by balls. I did not yet know I was getting totally ripped off as I did NOT learn shit and I beat the entire schools ass. Then this douche sucker punched me and I wanted to BEAT HIS ASS for real and they told me to leave. The Gracie's are Pussies. Why are there NOT any Gracie's in MMA?

@@jamesmcjamesington631 The Gracie's got to brand "Brazilian Jiu-jitsu" but they were not thr only or the first Brazilian grappling system. Luta Livre was around concurrently to Gracie Jiu-jitsu. But they didn't have a big marketing arm. So most people don't know about it. But Luta Livre went toe to toe with GJJ guys, often winning. Euclides Peirera famously submitted Carlson Gracie. Think about it, how can you even have challenge matches if there weren't other grapplers around?

Mataemon Tanabe ( Fusen Ryu) disciple of Motsugai Takeda (member of Takeda clan and a buddhist Zen priest known as Fusen and founder of Fusen Ryu) taught its ju jutsu ground techniques (ju jitsu) to some judokas on the kodokan after defeating each one of them and they incorporated Fusen ju jitsu into judo. He was appointed judo kyoshi in 1906, teaching at the Butoku Kai until his retirement in 1922. Theres is a. pdf of 1906 "the game of Ju Jitsu" of Yukio Tani student of Tanabe (Fusen Ryu) long before Gracie Jiu jitsu, at that time Tani was calling it "Ju Jitsu" and if you read that. pdf is identical to modern jiu jitsu. So what you call today "Jiu jitsu" is Fusen Ryu Ju Jitsu (+ some catch wrestling in case of Bjj). In the book of 1906 you can see the use of " the close Guard" etc but there is no triangle choke as it is a modern kosen judo development from1921, the Sankaku-jime (triangle choke). Of course Helio Gracie, Carlson Gracie and Franca, Pire Dos Reis etc learned Maedas Judos (which had Fusen Ryu already incorporated to Judo + catch wrestling) perfected and developped a lot of techniques mostly Gi chokes techniques with long sleeves and made it a worldwide addiction we enjoy today.

That's just plain wrong! Newaza Tanabe formed a small group of like-minded Jujutsu students and trained for the sole purpose of defeating Kano Jigoro's Judo students. Which were whipping all the Jujutsu students around making them look bad. Fusen Ryu like all Jujutsu schools only had limited number of Ground techniques and is certainly not a coherent whole, they are there if you look through all the schools of Jujutsu but you will be hard pressed to find the ground techniques you hold so dear in Fusen Ryu. If what you were saying were correct than any student of the Fusen Ryu school could easily defeat a high ranking Judo student and that *never* happened. After the defeat Kano did ask him to teach his students the techniques he developed - Kano was already a master of two differing schools of Jujutsu so he didn't need the whole Fusen Ryu curriculum in his dojo only the newaza component which he and his group developed. Maeda was a newaza specialist and that is what became "Jiu" (which does not mean anything in any language) and "Jitsu" which is a mispelling of Jutsu (and means something else) but then again no one has accused the Brazillians of being smart or how to run anything (like the Olympic Games), what a fracking disaster. Don't believe the Gracie half truths.

@@vaughanmacegan4012 motsugai takeda of the takeda clan used ju jutsu techniques that he learned as a kid like any other member of the takeda samurai family to defeat armored foes in batttlefield. He then became a buddhist priest and lwft the clan. He was an expert in 18 different styles undefeated. He founded Fusen Ryu because his surname was Fusen, people called motsugai takeda Fusen. Tanabe learned from motsugai takeda school. 1906 the gane of ju jutsu is the first book on jujutsu from tanabe students Yukio Tani. its obvious Tanabe will not develop a whole ground game to defeat judokas that ground game was already in existanxe as part of the samurai ju jutsu, he learned it from takeda school. At that time kano was collecting different styles drom different ryus, and so he added the ju jutsu techniques to judo he was lacking when tanabe show his students the importance of newaza. Anyways in 1916 Ad Santel using catch wrestling defeated the whole Kodokan. All these submissions were knew to them and many were expelled from the kodokan and went learning catch as catch can a tradition that continued in shoot wrestling in japan up until today with Sakuraba. So today Bjj is a mix of catch and jujutsu (from Maedas judos that was Tanabe newaza + all the catch Maeda learned ). When maeda arrived to brazil there was already a book on jujutsu and a school founded by yukio Tani in England that was depicting nearly 80% of today Bjj by Yukio Tani pupil of Tanabe. The Gracies learned a lot of catch wrestling and mixed it into the jujutsu they got from Maeda and other local judo masters.

@@vaughanmacegan4012 hard pressed? you won't find it at all. BJJ is Fusen Ryu JJ is the classic urban myth. Faux origin story of bjj, like Planet Krypton. It does not come from Fusen Ryu. If you know anything about how Ko-budo (old martial arts) is preserved in Japan, this is obvious. Where is the ground game of Fusen? (crickets chirping.) Japanese forget No-Thing. And the story of the tokyo police match defeat with judo has been told so many times by so many ill-informed people the fib grows each time. There was a match. Results were mixed. Not 100%. Kodokan judo ground technique is not merely a derivative of Fusen-ryu. Kodokan already had newaza teachers at the time of the match. They added to the staff. Actually 柔術 (じゅうじゅつ) phonetically based on the kana is jee-yu-ji-yu-tsu - said quickly/properly jujutsu, but that's how Jiujutsu comes about some times. Jitsu is just a mispronunciation. 柔 what does that mean? We can pretty much nuke the idea that Helio Gracie put leverage and softness into "jijitsu" too. While we're in pursuit of truth.

@@aircombatmaneuvers There is no Ground grappling in Fusen Ryu. Mataemon's newaza was his OWN creation seperate from his Fusen Ryu as is explained in Yukio Tani's book Game of Jiujitsu...lol Also all the Fusen Ryu on youtube from Japan shows no ground work at all. And Newaza/Ground techniques where you fight off your back in NOT in any Traditional Samurai Jujutsu schools because ground work on the battle field is suicide, in fact I bet you cant link a Samurai era jujutsu video or book that shows any ground work. With the closet being "seated Jujutsu techniques" which is hardly similar to guard work type grappling.

Excellent piece of work. I do have one comment to make though: it was mostly Scottish labourers who first introduced football to Brazil, and at the time the Scottish style was very much a quick, short passing game. All the football literature of the time talks about the difference between that and the style played in England and elsewhere. In Pele's generation, if not later, they still talked about the Brazilian style as "Escoces."

@@mcmc1863 I actually attended three different ju-jitsu clubs the first as I mentioned was sports Jitsu (probably the closest to main stream Ju-jitsu, it was full contact and run by the british army boxing champion, It was really good, probably more physical than a lot of other martial arts, bloody nose on my first day, but good for fitness. Then I moved and went to a different club, where weapons seemed to be the focus, which didn't really take my interest as it seemed impractical and the teacher was very impatient. Finally and last but not least I joined a club that had developed its own style of Ju-Jitsu probably had strong connections to the original Ju-jitsu. Again it was full contact, and fitness levels were extremely high, the techniques were also very technical and required a lot of skill, unlike what I have seen of Karate which is very direct and uncomplicated. But Ju-Jitsu is brutal, probably the most practical of all of the martial arts. I liked the fact that there was such difference between the variants of Ju-Jitsu, so if you ever got bored you could just change clubs.

why do so many in the Bjj community want to attach their history to the Kosen club? Maeda Mitsuyo had no connection to that club, he was actually in the United states doing exhibitions with some of his instructors from the Kodokan when the Koshen was started. The thing you need to know about the Koshin club is that it is where high level judoka who don't want to fallow the rule that your not allowed to take part in prize fights are placed even to this day. If a judoka can't get a corporate or government sponsor going to the Koshin is one of the few ways to start doing prize fighting and not get excommunicated from judo. You are not allowed to prize fight and take part in high level judo matches that is why you only don't see active high level judoka fighting in mma only former judoka. And for the most part most judoka who are high level are going to make more money and have longer careers sticking with corporate or government sponsorship then what mma can offer.

ALMIGHTY GOD KABIR is the father of all souls that JESUS, MOHAMMAD, GURU NANAK, VEDH was telling in BIBLE, QURAN, GURU GRANTHA SAHEB .. In OLD Orthodox Jewish Bible KABIR is mentioned...KABIR means (ALMIGHTY GOD) in hebrew...but when translated in different languages translator removed KABIR word.....Quran written in arabic has also KABIR word....KABIR means Supreme in arabic.....In vedh also Kabir is mentioned.....U will get surprised that in Holy book of SIkh called PRAANSANGALI…. GURU NANAK himself described that Lord Kabir is his Guru and Lord KABIR met him..and in GURU GRANTHA SAHEB Guru Nanak called Lord kabir as kartar (GOD)..but todays Sikh says that GURU NANAK had no Guru........Just by reading holy books it is impossible to get depth knowledge of Holy text because we are just a living beings.. In vedhas also KABIR is mentioned...our brain isnot capable and doesnot understands the secrets behind the words and world.....JESUS AND MOHAMMAD both were aware of LORD KABIR but later followers were not able to get depth knowledge .....In bible it is written that Jesus was son of FATHER... then WHO IS THE FATHER? Brother/SISTER LORD KABIR has send the messenger in present time in the form of SAINT RAMPALJI MAHARAJ... BIBLE, QURAN, VEDH, GURU GRANTHA SAHEB are holy books of Christain, Hindu, MUlsim, SIKh & all these holy books are suggesting one ALMIGHTY GOD KABIR but today preachers of different religion doesnot understand the secrets thats why HUMAN society cannot get full benefits from ALMIGHTY GOD...As a result more and more people are becoming non believer..... … Any kinds of DISEASES(MENTAL, PHYSCIAL, SPIRITUAL), PARANORMAL ACTIVITY,CURSE,BLACK MAGIC,GHOST is cured by Getting Diksya (mantra ) from SAINT RAMPALJI MAHARAJ..Note: No charge is taken. .one can get MANTRA dikshya from INTERNET or BY PHONE CALL after getting dikshya evil things cannot hover around the person....ANY KINDS OF DIESEASES AIDS, CANCER , KIDNEY FAILURE IS HEALED BY SAINT RAMPALJI MAHARAJ......BUT ONE SHOULD NOT VIOLATE GODS RULES after becoming DISCIPLE of SAINT RAMPALJI MAHARAJ - NO MEAT, NO EGG, NO DRUGS( ALCOHOL, CIGARATEES, TOBACCO, MARIHUANA, COCAINE) -NO ADULETERY, NO PORN, NO POLYGAMY, NO PRE MARRIAGE SEX, -NO GAMBLING, NO STEAL -NO ABORTION Download free GYAN GANGA ,(WAY OF LIVING) JINEKI RAHE book on WWW.JAGATGURURAMPALJI.ORG or CALL OR SMS ON FOLLOWING NUMBERS TO GET GYAN GANGA , JINEKI RAHE(WAY OF LIVING) , GEETA TIMRO GYAN AMRIT FREE OF COST THROUGH OUT THE WORLD AND FREE COURIEIR SERVICE IS AVAILABLE For more spiritual knowledge Please Download free GYAN GANGA, WAY OF LIVING( JINEKI RAHE) book on WWW.JAGATGURURAMPALJI.ORG or CALL OR SMS ON FOLLOWING NUMBERS TO GET GYAN GANGA , JINEKI RAHE(WAY OF LIVING) , GEETA TIMRO GYAN AMRIT BOOK FREE OF COST THROUGH OUT THE WORLD AND FREE COURIEIR SERVICE IS AVAILABLE.. This was good, very good. I just can't understand why they didn't have the courtesy of calling it Brazilian Judo, because that's exactly what it was. The term Judo was well established be fore Maeda left Japan. Maybe the Gracies were the great marketeers they always were. Maybe they wanted to distance themselves and not fall under the decisions of the Kodokan. Besides, Kosen Judo wasn't established until 1920, long after Maeda and his Judo compatriots went abroad.

If the Gracies called their system "judo," they would not have had a competitive marketing advantage versus the legitimate Kodokan judoka who were teaching in Brazil. If you can give the first generation Gracies credit for something, it's for keeping their system separate from judo. Without the Gracies, judo would have taken over Brazil.
@henrikg1388
@henrikg1388 3 жыл бұрын
@@RichardBejtlich I don't get your point. The "marketing advantage" is just what makes the Gracies so pathetic and silly. Until 1995, their style was inferior to Judo in all ways. But the spectacle of the first few UFCs made them look superior, when in fact, they would have lost to any high-level judoka at the time. They just made sure that such a matchup never happened. They could have called it Gracie Judo, Brazilian Judo or freestyle Judo. I don't give a horse's ass about their marketing advantage. Either you are being honest or you lie to your own advantage. They keep on lying to this day. And you know what? Judo took over Brazil anyway. Down there, Judo is way more popular than BJJ. In the Western world, people still believe in the Gracie myth.

Read the chapter The Fable of Fusen in the book Aikido in Japan and the Way Less Traveled (about living and training in Japan in various martial arts) about the historical origins of BJJ from Kodokan judo, not 古武道 (kobudo). Be forewarned that the author studies BJJ too, but the book is footnoted thoroughly to actual evidence, as is the preceding chapter which is all about Japanese immigrating to Brasil, including in 1908 when the first official group of Japanese immigrants arrived in Porto de Santos aboard the Kasato Maru, bringing their culture (including martial arts) with them.
