It is well-known and has many views, readers, books and videos about it. If you are talking about school history, it is because they only teach the country history, not anything else. Not to mention that school history is one of the worst sources to know about history.

Atil is on the Ural river not the Volga river. It is now Atira in Kazakhstan. I know that Bulgarian history mentioned it was on Volga river, but that is Astrakhan not Atil.
