The ones from the begging were basically treated like any other colonies, but if we are talking about the last 3 buffer zones, one became kosovo and the other ones are just military enforced borders between N Cyprus and Rep. of Cyprus or between Syria and Israel; probably if there were people before living there, they were forced to leave if they didnt already

By military enforced borders i mean that they are externally enforced not by one of the two countries, in order to keep the "peace"
