1) They're probably important for the general feel or suspension of disbelief of the event 2) They determine the behavior of the NPC traffic which in turn affects the experience of the player 3) At the very least they provided a common forum for diplomacy, which is probably important, given how the WWI was partially caused by the tangled web of alliances and unclear interests. By comparison, WWII was caused by a failure to contain rogue nations, so we cannot say the League of Nations failed at that basic level

You state at the end that the League of Nations was "replaced" by the United Nations, but that statement is misleading. The United Nations was founded on 24 October 1945 and the League of Nations disbanded on 19 April 1946; so the two organizations co-existed for almost six months. The League disbanded because all of its member states were leaving for the new organization, and the only way for the League's staff to save their jobs was to disband the League and offer all its assets to the new organization.
