The history of Lock raiding in Rust

A thing to keep in mind for the soup code raid that you didnt mention is that it was due to the guest code update. It wasnt even a exploit it was jsut the fact that every code lock automictically had their guest code set to 0000. So you couldnt steal someones base unless you blew the doors up and there was a counter to the bug and that was just changing the default code from 0000 to smth else. Also back when key locks still needed keys to use what you would do is have one key inside your base so you can respawn and still have your base, and then when you would go out you would have 1 on you that you would hide in a stash in a rock near the base. So it was very rare that you killed someone that had a key on them because people werent dumb. But one meta that came from this was looking in rocks near bases for hidden stashes. This actually worked super well and was how you key lock raided before the whole 100 id number thing was discovered. Key locks werent ever meant to be used in bases. There only purpose was to secure your base before you had a furnace. I honestly miss the progression of it but it might just be nostalgia. Its like how now adays you focus on metal frags to get rid of your wood door, but instead you would focus on getting a codelock. ALSO A REALLY COOL THING back in the day was maps. You could kill a player and they would have a crafted map on them, this map most likely would have drawings of where there base is, so back in the day you would kill soemone that had a key, loot the map they had, and then go to their base and steal it. This was so fucking old and i dont evne think you can draw on maps anymore and obvciously its not an item anymore. Maps had so many updates throughout the years but at first it worked like minecraft where you had to discover everything. anyway im rambling, ive just played since 2014 so know way too much about old metas. You should do a video on heavy armor and how it used to be meta and how people use it now a days. Muzzle break also used to be meta lmfao but that was a different era. Back when everyone wore atleast 1 piece of heavy armor when roaming.

I don't play rust, but the one time i tried it, there were the drawable maps. I really liked the feature, and i still think it's superior immersion-wise to modern rust's map

I will never forget how I raided a huge base back in the day, and they had so many boom, but also one player had map on him and it had drawn red circle around our base location, and it was writen RAID on it. It set chills down my spine as I took all they loot, and wrote "HOW ABOUT NO'' back on the map and left if for them.

I feel like a cool addition would be to have thumbprint locks that allowed you to open any doors that you have regestered on and nobody else. This would solve the issue of code raiding and if it’s expensive such as 15hqm, 1 tech trash could make it so groups can get some but not many

You can code raid still. Just take the top 8 codes to each base. It's less about picking that base, more about that base having one of the 25% of codes in the top 8.

The meta for key locks was using a stash in a bush next to your base or under your wooden foundation so you didn't have to carry the key with you.

man, I did love a good old fashioned keyraid. A mate and I would have a near inventory full and just lurk around looking for keylocked bases and just walk right on in. that 0000 code, i experienced it once.. Used it once.. then literally mid wipe they wiped the servers, mid wipe being the saturday or sunday after force (australia) so imagine 2-3 days of force wipe progression just instantly wiped cause of this glitch. Needed to be done but man people raged

Your friend is completely in accurate, keylocks was changed in 2020 to no longer require key not 2016, in 2016 the game wasn't even in full release yet it full released in 2018.

when my brother was 12, the first time he ever played rust he found a ton of keys in a bush and was able to get in someones base. He took over the base and logged off, but in the morning he was game banned. We have submitted tons of appeals that went unanswered and sent tons of emails. Now he has 2255 days since last ban on his account. The game devs used to be completely brain dead. We still dont know why he was game banned. Note: My brother has never been very good with computers. He has a decent understanding as most pc gamers do, but he had no idea how to get cheats, and still doesnt frankly. I know for a 100% fact he wouldnt risk getting a game ban on his main account as well.

tbh when I first got into Rust in 2020 without any idea about the meta or wider community, I looked at code locks and thought, "I wonder if people just use old PINs and shit for these. I bet you could just use a table based on bank account hacks to figure out likely codes" I think anyone who has a background in computer security would probably come to the same conclusion.

In this time, when key was needed to open the door starting was absolutely different. There was no sense in buildin base while you can't aford furnace, or had empty cans to melt them in campfire to get codelock. Or one of your teammates had to stay in base to open door for everyone else xD

This throwback video reminded me of this crazy exploit back in 2017 or 2018 (if my memory is right, could be off on that time) where explo ammo did 100 dmg per bullet on items in door frames. At the time I’m pretty sure double doors had more HP than single doors so everyone had double doors. Since they are in door frames whoever knew about this exploit first or at all was just melting through people’s bases.

The key lock thing applies to real life as well, someone out in the world has a key to a lock you own maybe even your neibor when I started to learn lockpicking I discovered that we are not as protected as we think we are when we lock ourselves in for the night. With enough time a 3 and 4 digit number can be hacked by trying the numbers in sequence I've done it myself with combination locks.

Console kinda got a code raiding nerf as well but, it doesn’t stop you from entering a code. Instead it increases damage every wrong code you put in doubling the damage. So technically we can’t really code raid but it’s still possible but slower.

I can tell you from experience, nobody ever used key locks in old Rust. As soon as I saw a shit shack with a key lock I knew it was someone with less than like 5 hours.

I think they changed it so you need to have TC Auth to be able to enter codes on locks. Which for one is more secure than letting someone retry over and over at certain intervals to guess and unlock the door code.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best, why don't rust dev's puts 6 digits instead of 4? that would make the guessing exponentially harder and useless. or if you don't want to edit the actual codelock, then add a new Tier 3 lock to the game, something more end-game. The Tier 3 can use 6 digits or even better, can work with SteamID, some sort of "fingerprint" lock.
