Mapex was founded in 1989, but its parent company, KHS, goes back 80 years in China and has a very interesting story beginning in after school music programs. Jeff is the brand manager for Mapex and is full of great stories about this relatively young drum brand and goes through the origins of all the iconic lines of drums that Mapex is famous for today.
Jeff is the brand manager of both Mapex and Sonor drums and is a working drummer in Nashville, Tennessee.

Thank you so much for posting this interesting insight to the origin of Mapex drums. I bought a used Mapex 4 piece set a couple of years ago and have been trying to get some background information about them. I even contacted Mapex and conversed with one of their reps. He couldn’t pinpoint a time as to when my kit was made or the name of the color. I even sent all the serial numbers but was told that there were no printed records about my drum’s history. I was told that the wood was either poplar or basswood though, and he thought my kit was made around 1990. It is a 4 piece kit consisting of a 12” snare, 10” rack tom, 12”floor tom, and an 18” bass drum. I was trying to add another rack tom but a 12” one to go with the 10” one, and that is why I was trying to find the name of the color. I gave up trying to match and just went with black to go with the goldish wrap I had. Anyway, thank you again for this very interesting podcast. Happy holiday season to you and your loved ones.

I have a few Mapex snares and love them all. The Birdseye maple snare is my favorite and main wooden snare drum, (I wish they would rerelease that model, I have the 5.5 and 6.5). Because I have so many drum sets I just haven’t needed another kit, but I played on many. They are solid drums and fit in anywhere. Great drums folks, get yourself a set and a few snares!

My orion classic series will be arriving next week. Don't forget that in the very early days they made drums by the name "LINKO". I bought my first Venus kit in early '93. And i still have it. The best Mapex drums are the old ones that were made in Taiwan

The Saturn 5 kits are unreal quality for the price. No comparison at all to these drums for the price.

Thanks so much for making this video! Mapex doesn't even put much of their own history on their website, and I've always wanted to know about their history. I know they don't have the pedigree of names like Ludwig or Gretsch, but I really love my Black Panther snare. And they seem to be improving their instruments all the time with assistance from the drummers on their roster. I think Russ Miller is really involved and he's a legendary drummer.

My biggest gripe with Mapex is they don't have spare parts, it's a nightmare to try to get replacement parts. That's the reason I gave up on them. They make incredibly beautiful flawless finishes though.

Worldmax makes really good drums, parts, hoops, and other decent things, also dynasty-makes marching percussion-i think they are taiwanese or there is Ming-fiberglass and carbon fiber.
