Very nice and concise, thanks! I own 7 volumes so far, the 8th on order, and itching to finish the set.

Been working on these books since they were gifted to me this past Christmas. The depth of Tolkien's imagination is staggering. Thank you for the synopsis. Your video might just be what I need to soldier through this epic tome.

This video didn't tell me anything I hadn't already known, but it's a sound introduction and overview to HoME for newcomers. So, well done for what it set out to do! 😊

If you already knew, you are in the 1% of Tolkien fans. Thanks for watching anyway! 🙌

@@TolkienRoad Haha, well, I think it's a little more than 1% :D Believe me or not, I've been a fan of the films first and it wasn't until fairly recently I finally finished the original books (including The Silmarillion). 20 years after seeing the films!

I have read some but not all of these. A lot of details but worth going through. It should be pointed out that you don't have to read them in order. If there is a particular thing that you're interested in just go to the book about that subject. Also, if you're interested in just the LOTR the four books covering it can be bought separately as a set called "The History of The Lord of the Rings". This can be confusing.

Fully in favor of skipping around - the best stuff is in Vol 10-12.

Finally, someone gives me the title of all these books, in order! I've been interested in them for years. But the information on them has been so confusing. I can't afford a whole set at once, so I've been looking for individual volumes on ebay and such. I could never keep straight the order. Thank you.

The only reason why I find the history of Middle-earth to be frustrating because I don't own all additions of the texts. Its very frustrating to not be able to follow along with the speaker/host of my fav chan. I have so much to catch up on, ill never get to the latter Histories anyway, though i would like to know more about Morgoth's Ring.

Thanks for this! I was just wondering offhandedly what we know about the order that Tolkien conceived of the various elements of the Legendarium so this was very timely - do you think it's fair to think of the published Silmarillion as a post LotR rewrite of the original ideas? And do you personally feel more tied to the earlier versions of the stories or the later?
@TolkienRoad2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I love the versions of the stories in The Silmarillion as published, and I really enjoy the other things Tolkien was writing post-LOTR that we get in HoMe vol 10-12. I would say it is the next "development" of the mythology that began in the late 1910's as The Book of Lost Tales.
@lucaswalker26932 жыл бұрын
@@TolkienRoad I also think that volumes 10-12 sound the most intriguing, I might start there if I ever actually dive into this monster

Its really important to know WHAT you are reading. Ive shared with you before how sloppily i came to these stories. Hobbit and LotR in '73-74. Then 25 years later, the Book of Lost Tales 1. Then the Silmarillion. This is not how one wades into the water. Its good to know what's in the water, awaiting, and how deep it gets.

I was always interested in reading the history off middle earth but heard they were just break downs off how the story was written same way as the separate Beren & Luthien book and the Fall of Gondolin book were - which were complete waste off money, I don’t care how a story was originally thought from beginning to end nothing like the Turin book, but back to the topic, so if that’s the case were they are written in the same styles I might just leave them be as wouldn’t be interested in those types off books and if the last 3 are more interesting....I might just borrow them from the local library instead off purchasing them 😂

They are def not for everyone, but there are some really interesting “outtakes” in the last 3 volumes.
